View Full Version : Classical MP Gametypes in PS

PS is essentially C&H type gameplay, or was in the original designs. The ANT runs were a stroke of genious to introduce an ESCORT type gameplay into the world as well, adding a nice bit of variance.

How about other classical game types which could be grafted into the PS universe?

AVP PREDATOR / YOUR "IT" from AVP MP games
A virus makes one player uber super strong, with custom alien weaponry, etc etc blah blah. Basically they become bad ass. Only one in the world; when he's killed the killer inherits the virus and becomes the next uber killer monster guy. Travelling through warp gates will purge the virus (ie its contained in a continent), as will HART de-contamination procedures.

Capture the flag
Some sort of inflitration to enemy home sanctuaries during specific month periods to extract secret documents a la DoD?

Brains gone dry; over to you guys from some more ideas! :D

Capture the Flag does not scale well. It is easy to feel involved, in CTF, if there are only 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 guys on your team. When you start getting towards 16-man teams, people can and often do start to feel extraneous/left out of the action, and any bigger than that and it's extremely irritating.

How do I know this?

I played DAoC.

The Ultimate Goal in DAoC is to capture other Realms' Relics. This is essentially just a much more irritating CTF where the flag does not return on its own. When you got around 300 people involved in the raid, it was just massively irritating and, while the preparation that was often involved, the organizing that had to go on behind the scenes (and, my favorite part, coordinating the materials and crafters for Siege weaponry to guard the gate everyone would retreat to) -- while that kind of strategic and semi-political maneuvering and management was often enjoyable, it was definitely repetitive enough that Relic raids QUICKLY grew stale. A single player can so rarely be more than a statistic.

Mythic realized this, which is why they clumsily shifted the focus of the game towards C&H -- the entrance to Darkness Falls, a new uber dungeon, is controlled by who has the most keeps. However, unlike PS, in DAoC there is no way to respond quickly to a threat at a Keep -- it generally takes about 15-20 minutes, IF anyone gives a tinker's damn, which no one does -- because, hell, it's easier to take an identical keep somewhere else, that will be completely undefended.

Planetside's method is much, MUCH better.

I guess we won't see the same type of cyclic base taking in PS as bases have specific function to provide focus (everyone will want the continents amp base for example).

Soooo... CTF may be out of the question then... anyone think of anything else in this lack of beta vacuum?

documents a la RtCW (u can think documents as a flag if u havent played RtCW, its basically the same), that would be AWESOME if u had teamplayers, think about it, you have to defend the flag carrier with eveyrthing u got! If he dies the team cant pick it up for about 5 minutes to add some gameplay by making everyone in one team 2 keep the carrier allive, that also makes teamkillas dont wanna teamkill him 4 the flag.
What a trip it would be! Thru deserts, convoys and anything.
CTF or something u catch and have to go home 2 ur home sanctuary or base would b awesome if u ask me.

yo yo i think that would be fat i also like the super soldier idea in one of the other post ...i think that the game would be better with generals to lead the wars for each faction
like a person would be elected general for each faction then have a all at war for one continant

maybe this is dumb but i think it would be awsome

The ability to destroy bases, and rebuild them, might be interesting if balanced correctly.

Also the ability to fortify in other ways - trenches, small towers.

As far as super units, a "super tank" al la Bolo or Ogre would be an interesting diversion.

One thing I did like in EQ were events - either GM lead events or holiday events. While those don't translate directly into PS, random events would be interesting.

I'm thinking things like: Some spawn tubes turning off or slowing down, a particular base temporarily getting special attributes, really severe weather halting air operations, temporary continent lock forcing those on it at the time to battle it out, a one use "super bomb", a sphere of influence failing, etc.
