View Full Version : Would you like to see Oculus Rift in Planetside 2?
This maybe a silly question (who wouldn't)..... But who would like to see the Oculus Rift in Planetside 2.?
Im getting very excited about this lately and we have a DEV kit on the way to the office.
All I can think about is running around having the Rift control head camera movement but keep mouse controls and keyboard for character movement.
Tweeted Higby today about it and he replied rather quickly by saying "he hopes so"......
Fingers crossed SOE also have a dev kit on the way to them...
p.s Valve/TF2 just signed up to be one of the first games to use/Beta the Rift on a global scale. (I think servers just for Rift players)

Yea, I think they would need to fix the preformance issues first, anything below 60 fps and the Rift starts falling to shit supposedly, and I imagine that's with Vsync on. Does the rift need 3d processing too? because if so thats even more strain considering PS2's performance issues.

Used one of the same kind when mech warrior 2 was released.
It was cool to look around inside your mech.
Too bad it had very poor resolution and you can't use it for too long or you get tired, I hope oculus rift can solve both of these problems.
Also, I wish they give priority to the existent peripheral before they started developing support for a peripheral nobody have.
I tried so much times my Xbox controller in the game so I can do small and precise analogical curves, with no success, also got lots of friend from bf-3 with controllers that they are used to use them to pilot in most games to be of no use in planetside 2, an analogical speed controller is essential for me.

People would have to adjust A LOT to play FPS with free head movement. Imagine not being able to keep your reticle still, which is what it'd feel like when you just start using the Oculus Rift.
If they put it in, and it's awesome, and I have lots and lots of MONEY, I don't see why I shouldn't get it myself.
Maybe SOE will even allow you to look backwards on the Flash now. Because seriously, you can do it in the Sundy already.
Also, going external vehicle camera with the Oculus Rift is something I image will be TRIPPY.

You wouldn't aim with your head. SOE would have to add in head look, ala Arma. Unless that is, you feel like spinning around in circles on your chair whenever you want to shoot someone and no longer be able to use the keyboard to move.

It could be cool addition but I'm not sure how popular that would be to wear that thing on the head. I'm some times tired even from my light headset after several hours of game play.
Also, since PS2 is not GPU heavy that extra unused GPU power can be dropped on Oculus 3D rendering. Profit! :)

Of course we want this support, it's the future of gaming. This could be a very cool experience in this game both in first person or in observer mode.

They haven't successfully implemented Eyefinity or NV Surround yet. But yeah, be great if they supported this.

SOE has dropped the ball on all the peripherals people like to use. Maybe one day soe will be able to throw some resources at it.

You are correct, that is a silly question. FUCK YEAH!
Well, provided they do it right and it's fully supported.

With the bad performance? Not really...

Nore does Nvidia 3D work currently... at least not that well.
I would love to see PS2 on the rift, they have about half a year to a year before the commicrial units come out and I don't think making the head tracking (which would be nice for people without it 2, if you could use a alt key to look around ala arma).

I couldn't get them to get TrackIR support integrated - Rift seems like a stretch. That said, TF2 will have support when the dev kit arrives, so at least I'll have something to play that I enjoy. :)
I suspect this is one of those momentum situations, wherein absolutely no one will have heard of it for 6 months, and suddenly every title on the planet supports it overnight.

I have a feeling you are right that no one will know about it for about 6 months before blowing up.

What's the weight on one of those things. I rememeber as a kid my neck would hurt real bad after an extended Gameboy session in a car trip. Can't imagine it would be that comfortable for the 6 hour marathons I'll pull every so often, if it weighs too much.
Anyway, I still prefer my method of having multiple monitors for multitasking. Really wish more game companies would just support Windowed Fullscreen mode and I wouldn't have to use a tool to force games into that mode. :P

Unknown, and recording is also an open question at this point. Probably going to confuse the hell out of fraps. :)
I'll post some vids when the gear gets here - seems like there's decent interest, and maybe prodding SOE will help.

If it worked well...sure? Why do I care if features exist for other people that don't effect me?
Unless it takes some time from somebody working on bugs or whatever.
It'd be cool to look around, but man, wearing goggles like that is something I don't want to do.

I'm with you on this one. This thing could go off like a nuke in the gaming industry and PS2 should be right in the middle of the explosion when that happens.
If the devs are smart they make sure that PS2 becomes a launching title. It could potentially give a big boost to their game.

I just keep thinking......this is perfect for porn. You could actually walk around an orgy...but yea would be neat for playing games to I guess.

No that's not what I meant :(
I meant that when you're moving your head around, moving the reticle onto a target will be much harder because of more vectors.
The way I imagine it, it'd be like playing Tribes:Ascend during an earthquake (both INSIDE and OUTSIDE the game for added effect)

I've heard its weight compared to ski-goggles. Really light apparently. But no ones tested it for long periods (the dev kits just got out though) so we'll have to see. My ears get really uncomfortable after a while with headphones on but thats just because of the ear pieces for my glasses.
But yeah if you're interested in the Rift, check out this panel on VR including Chris Roberts, Paul Bettner and Cliff Bleszinksi (<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/daZHbKPhLRc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>) (=_= how the heck do you embed videos)
A particularly interesting bit is when they predict people wanting more social stuff in a typically isolated VR experiences, ie another level of social interaction in MMOs ie more first person MMOs.
If the devs ever support OR for PS2, I think the animations they currently have for head turning (where you can look at people without pointing a gun at their face) would already compliment it perfectly.

It could be novel. I don't think it would work well for the pace and competitiveness of the game.
So basicaly this device would allow you to turn our head around, but it would have nothing to do with walking and firing right. Say for instance if im running toward a point and I get fire from the left. Instead of turning left to see my attacker I could just turn my head left, while still moving forward. But I would still need my keyboard to turn my body left correct, bringing my weapon toward my attacker. Or say for instance in a vehicle and I want to turn around and look at my cockpit, I could just use my head to look around, but to actually stear the vehicle I would have to use the keyboard. I mean its cool

Sure, why not? You don't have to use it. And afaik it is pretty easy to implant.
I wanted to buy the developer version, because I am pretty hyped for it. But i'd rather wait for the consumer version with is going to be much better. But I am absolutely sure I am going to buy one :) Imagine the Oculus rift with Star Citizen. :D
