A conclusion I got from one of the SOE's forum developers posting a test thread, citing "A test post!" under Planetside 2 Test Server: Announcements.

I hope they will allow you to have 4 characters per account when the test server comes out, since i have 1 main character (My VS) and two secondery ones i occasionaly play(a TR and NC) and i don't wanna deleate my TR and NC since i finally got some decent gear on em.

The test server is going to be extremely popular. As long as there is a priority queue for people who subscribe I will be happy.

test server will require a new install of the game and will most likely use a different database, means you have 3 new free slots

Is this conjecture or is this a fact? If so I hope they let us copy our install directory as a base instead of redownloading it.

The likelihood of requiring a separate install is quite high. Many of the changes they'll want to test will require modifications to the game client. They can't make those changes to the live client without creating some potentially serious issues.

It's how WoW handles their Public Test Realm. I don't know if the installer you download simply copies and patches your live install, though. I never participated in testing back when I played.

I don't see any reason to disagree with Basti's assesment, we would be testing a different build after all.

Oh, you certainly can do that. Copy the Client, put the Test server launcher over it, patch to test server client. How much you save is up in the air tho, nobody knows till it actually happens.
This works because SOEs launcher checks all the files if you do a full scan, and patches whatever actually needs patching.


The above is a fact.
But as for characters, dunno really. I would assume SOE puts the whole thing on a different database, as they and every other MMO does with test servers. Everything else would just be stupid, because there is no way to access live servers via test server client, and test server via live server client. So showing you characters you cant access is rather foolish. ;)

If they lock weapons/content to only use what they are testing then I doubt people will live on the test server. I can see this being an issue if the test server is like the VR server, but with all the continents.
