So the Planetside 2 MLG stream is up and running. Whisenhunt is attempting to explain the game to new players that regularly tune in to the Twitch MLG giving the game a whole lot of new exposure (700+ people watching before the first commercial break).
So far I think they've done a good job at explaining and displaying the game's key features and excited to see the new players ingame.
So keeping things in the positive light, what were some of the things that you feel where displayed or explained well, and what are some of the areas that could have been done better?
I don't keep up with MLG much but I do enjoy the extra publicity that the game is getting.
I also noticed that MLG has a subscriber only chat (You can't talk unless you drop $10 lol)
So let's have a (civil) discussion about this week's broadcast here.

It's not a bad stream - I was hoping for a bit more than total newb level stuff but if it helps get new players in then I'm happy.

Glad they are doing some obs cam stuff - it's really showcasing how much work observer needs ;)

tbh i might get killed by every PSU member but why don't they show a crown battle in order to show the scale of the game. the shiny always brings people in at first they will love the crown and as they learn about the game; then they will start hating the crown xD .

Lol I was thinking the same thing, it looks like he's picking up on how to use it now. Jimmy isn't a bad player as well, he's playing much better than how I've seen him play during FNO. :P

And the chat is for subs only. Great.
When you mute the vast majority of your viewers, you're missing out on an important aspect of the stream: the viewers' ability to interact with the caster and each other. If you're trying to introduce potential players to a game, this seems especially important.

Heh, yeah. I was wondering why the chat was empty, until I tried posting... Nuts to that.

Totally agreed chat for this show should not be blocked out to subscribers only. What a stupid idea.

Do all mlg broadcasts use this block system to try and generate cash?

I didn't catch the MLG stream, have no desire to, but I will note that if MLG forces people to pay $10 to chat...try to lure Malorn or the like on AGN chat and do a side by side commentary with ultra free group participation!
Or not. Makes no difference to me, just throwing it out there.

Hmm, looks like you can only watch the recording if you're a subscriber too... Which sucks.

Why should we have to explain something to you when you've already entered the thread with a negative demeanor?
I made this for primarily discussion and feedback, not to explain why someone pissed in your cheerios.

When is the next episode? Is this going to go through 10 shows?

I think its pretty fun and good ongoing advertising for the game. Of course everyone has different opinions on what constitutes good tv.

I'm happy they haven't scrapped this yet, and happy MLG is continuing to cover it. Can't wait for more information about the tournament itself.
Observer mode is very nice, if I had it, I would probably be kicking back all day and just watching everyone go at it. I used to cloak up in a tree and watch people in PS1, not quite the lurker as DURTY was, but I did my fair share of just AFK peepin' from a tree as shit went down.

The whole business model behind this seems sucky. What works for popular games like LoL and SC2 doesn't necessarily work for a niche game like PS2.
With popular games you can put chat functionality behind a subscription model to make money out of it but with PS2, that's just plain stupid. Until PS2 establishes itself as a popular e-sport game it needs all the social interaction options in order to get the momentum going.
If they keep blocking the chat like that this whole PS2 e-sport adventure will die out before it's even born.

I agree with Rolfski, if they want to grow the esport community then they shouldnt block chat. At least this first year. They should want to make this as easy as possible to enjoy.

So, I finally watched this. What did people think about these videos? I thought they were a good introduction to Planetside 2 for those who have never seen it before, but it seemed to just randomly follow Jimmy Whisenhunt wherever he went without any particular rhyme or reason. In my opinion, it completely lacked the competitive element that will be needed to keep viewers coming back week on week.
Do you think that the next week will be different? Do you think that they will they start doing outfit vs outfit competitions or will it just focus on random battles that happen to be going on at the time (which I find pretty boring tbh since we already have FNO and AGN vids for that).

Jimmy kept calling the terran esf a reaver and the terran mbt a vanguard. These announcers need to be intimately aware of all the facets of the game. They need to do their homework, study the game and play this game for a week or so non stop. You want your announcers to be able to anticipate the action. One other thing, learn how to use the observer cam. You want to be able to move smoothly around the battlefield and not like a teenage driver.

The intro was good, I even learned one thing or two about the menus. The gameplay wasn't so great (I did not watch it all, though). FNO has at times been better, the best I've seen so far was an overview of an attack of the Crown during Beta at E3 (IIRC) with Luperza and TotalBiscuit commenting.
The main difference was that the E3 video was mostly about outdoor fighting. Indoor fighting is a bit too messy to be enjoyable at the moment. That might change when we can get 1st person views of good players. The first PS2 competition had that right, I think.
For the time being, stay out of watch towers and tech plants, I would say.

First off let me say, "Thank you Planetside Universe for having a more thoughtful, mature (for the most part) forum population than the official PS2 forums!".
Reading the official forums when it comes to talk of MLG and PS2 is just painful. The general consensus is that PS2 is a casual, noncompetitive, pubbies game and doesnt focus on player skill enough to be good as an esport.
Now I don't know alot about MLG and esports, I'll admit that. But I think some of the comments over there are far from realistic.
First off PS2 is VERY competitive in my opinion. With my outfit, and we are not a large outfit at all, it has gotten to the point where we actively look for other organized outfits to go against. We really go looking for a good fight. If we don't we usually end up fighting a hodge podge of lone wolves and pubbies and roll over them, even when out numbered 2+ to 1. It gets boring and as the Infantry NCOIC it's my job to keep my guys entertained. They WANT a good fight. So, to us, PS2 is VERY competitive. That being said, I would call us "competitively casual" because we don't make it mandatory to log on every night for 6 hours. Some of us are older and have families. We do training on Tues nights and main Ops are on Fridays. Show up those two days and you are considered an active member. But when we are on and doing Ops we really go looking for a good fight.
Second, the comment was made on the official forums that PS2 is doesnt focus on individual skill enough, that the more organized outfits with the better strategies and better "war machine" wins battles and that's not what belongs in esports.
I agree and disagree with that opinion. It doesn't matter how good your strategy is or how awesome your logistical "war machine" is, if you can't win in a fire fight you are NOT going to take an objective. If your guys are not skilled enough to execute your strategy it won't matter how good that strategy is, you won't be able to pull it off and take that objective. So individually you HAVE to have some skill. Now the part I DO agree with is that teamwork trumps individual skill...EVERYTIME. Esports is based off of competition, whether it's 1v1 or team vs team.
I for one am looking forward to pitting my guys against the best of the best. Whether it's looking for that organized TR/VS outfit and having at them on what ever continent they are on or facing off in a MLG bracket, doesn't matter to me.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
