View Full Version : Planetside 2 Vehicles Derived from U.S. Military Vehicles?

Ok, so in a different thread, I noticed (through an argument) that the NC vehicles and even 2 of the common pool vehicles look like they were designed after american vehicles. Take the Vanguard. It looks like it was derived from the M1A2 Abrahms Main Battle Tank. The Galaxy looks like it was designed after the CV-22 Osprey. And let's face it, the Sunderer is just a really big and fat STRYKER ICV (with a little bulk added to the front and height of the vehicle).
Here are the links to the pictures:

The Vanguard is definitely based on the Abrahms/Leopard 2, and the Reaver seems to be pretty heavily influenced by the Apache Helicopter.

I don't think you understand the backstory of Planetside. We came from EARTH. Even if there wasn't anything about our modern countries, everyone on Araxis originates from Earth.

That's not his point.
The Leitmotiv for the NC is however indeed rather US 80's/90's based, the reasoning for this is probably because of the NC being the extreme capitalist freedom faction.
Guess who the posterchild of that are?
TR have more in common with Russian units, more rounded, smoothed out plating. Probably also because of the more dictatorial government image.
Being alien loving, VS have a bit of a scarab type insect and fish thing going, I suppose because that's some of the most alienating type of creature style on Earth to us mammals. You see that trend used in a lot of sci-fi. If they wern't alien worshipping fanatics, they'd probably have had either an Arab, British, German or Japanese inspired look, considering the US company's pet-enemies. In which case German or Japan would be most likely due to the tech fetishes of those nations.
That, or the VS would have looked like floating ipads.

I think in any good sci-fi there has to be a certain human element of believability and relatability. The designs of course are a reflection of that. Of course the Vanu represents some of our worst fears realized......grown men running around in tight pants.

That first concept of the Vanguard II is freakin' badass!
Possible variant for the artillery cannonsfound in the GU content analysis threads (GU5 I believe)?

There was some crack-smoking forum member few days ago who was absolutely sure that the Prowler resembled the German Tiger tank.

The NC take a lot of cues from the last 70 years of the US military. I think this is kind of obvious.

Well, I know this, but I'm just pointing out that I think the Sundy and Gal have U.S. Military derived designs.

The Sunderer is closer to an RG-33 (MRAP) than it is to a Stryker.

NC are obviously very US modern military based. Everything they have screams US military.
TR remind me a lot of command and conquer's NOD faction or Red Alert's Russia.. which is well.. scifi russian themed.
VS are very insect/aquatic. Lots of smooth lines and shapes...

I have been saying the Galaxy resembles the Osprey for a while now, though I don't think I ever posted on the forums about it.
Don't think there's anything even vaguely resembling the ESFs in the real world though.
I suppose maybe the mossie looks like a helicopter without a rotor... MAYBE.
