View Full Version : More voice battle macros please!

I know we have VOIP in game but to be frankly honest, a vast majority of people either turn it off or way down due to this being a F2P game and they always attract, well idiots tbh. The types who spam music, screaming or porno over it just to annoy their betters.
Most outfits use their own internal VOIPs as they can be controled safely by admins.
So to that end I'd like to request that the voice macos in game be expanded to incorporate a more complete list of useful tactical sayings on the battlefield.
Games like counter-strike and day of defeat really got to grips with the idea of VMs and Day of Defeat especially has a great list of them that I think incorporated into Planetside 2 would give huge benefits to the combat gameplay.
Let's take a look at some shall we & see what you think but every day I play I wish I had some of these.
off the top of my head there are two that I deem vital and of all the most I want.
1: Use grenades - How many times have I come upon a room of enemy that we attack in single file and they take us down, even though everyone around me is toting these explosive throwing devices. I see it time and again in other FPS's when I cry out "use grenades!" it's like that lil light bulb goes off in peoples minds and they remember they've got them.
2: go, Go, GO! - Oh your gods this is another one that I've wished so many times to have, everyone milling around inside a spawn room like frightened children because the bad men are outside, it's like they are waiting for that mental drill sgt. to show up and stick his boot up their ass to get into motion.
Or you come across a stalled armour column that's being held at bay by 3 Grannys with brooms.
Here's a quick list of useful saying going to underline the ones I'd most like to see added.
•Area clear!
•Displace
•Enemy behind us!
•Fire in the Hole
•Flank left!
•Flank right!
•Get a grenade in there!
•Go, go, go!
•Grenade, take cover!
•Hail
•Hold this position!
•I need backup!
•Incoming fire, left flank!
•Incoming fire, right flank!
•MG position ahead!
•Move forward!
•Negative!
•Nice shot!
•Prepare for assault!
•Smoke 'em!
•Sniper!
•Squad, covering fire!
•Stick together!
•Use the Bazooka!
•We need an MG up here!
•Yes Sir!
(made a few changes to remove redundant ones)
Your always saying that the best way to make good games is to take the best elements from other games and make them part of yours, well Sound department, it's your time to shine! :D

Oh and for the
•Hail command I thought we could have some faction specific ones as well as stand ones to mix it up, I do miss my grizzled veteran from PS1 saying "Hail" and getting back "Well met", "Hi there" & "GREETINGS!" :D
along with those maybe we could also have something like
Hail TR - "Unity"
Hail NC - "Freedom"
Hail VS - "For Vanu"

I was really confused when I first started playing and saw how few voice macros there were. Why do they have "Affirmative" but not "Negative"?
What ever happened to:
"Get in the vehicle!"
"Get in the vehicle!"
"Get in the vehicle!"
"Get in the vehicle!"
"Get in the vehicle!"
"Get in the vehicle!"
....On second thought, maybe that's why.
Tribes: Ascension has tons of voice macros with all different types of voices and that system works awesome. People get pretty hilarious with them.
Player 1: "I AM THE GREATEST!"
Player 2: "No."

I miss the Hail or Hello. Whenever you see someone you know it always used to be the case that you would VVH or VVW for 'wave'.
And while I'm at it... why the unintuitive keypresses, what was ever wrong with VVH? I' learnt that reading the mainual while PS1 loaded from CD's, I knew how to VVH with the best of them before I actually played!

You missed a vitally important one out which is even more relevant to this that the predecessor ......." Incoming enemy aircraft! " Could save alot of lives out on the field that one!
Imo we desperately need more of these asap.

Well I was thinking about it, I know v-v-h is old skool but given that things have to evolve and we have lots of new keystroke macros on the keys so I'd keep V to activate the Voice commands and then switch to 1-9 for the commands
So you have V-1-1 = "Hail" - first list & first saying
V-1-2 = "Way to be Soldier" - first list & second saying
V-2-4 = "Fire in the Hole" - second list & fourth saying
This gives you
1-9 lists of commands (if we ever need that many) & 1-9 on that list to activate a different saying, 0 (zero) is the back button while ESC remains the cancel.
This way it's not to different from what we have now and won't require everyone to get used to the V-V-H system again or for the first time. ;)

I miss those voice macros so much.
I am already tired of aiming at a friendly unit holding Q and requesting a gunner for no success and really hard to do in the field.
I normally spot all threads to warn nearby units, but sometimes you can't do it because it would expose yourself and sometimes is a very good cloacker that moves to fast to be spotted.
Also lots of people keep spawning I need repair when the terminals are down, sometimes it is hard to guess what they need, and it is even worst when people on maxes units keep spawning I need a medic!

I don't understand how they could gloss over such an important and extensive feature. A proper, thorough voice macro system is a need for any PC game, especially in 2013.
They break down language barriers, and help those that don't normally play with a microphone.
So yes in total support of a more extensive voice system, preferably similar to PS1 (which I like because the keys assigned made sense and are easy to remember), or other similar VGS style systems

'Fabulous!'
They are definitely convenient, even needed, despite VoIP.
PS1 Voice macroes were great, I don't understand why it wasn't emulated or downright imported into PS2 considering they included a Voice Macro system. Other than that, there are indeed many other games to find good inspiration from.
The current one works, but is severely limited IMO.

The truth is, Tribes Ascent got a so good voice macro system that I never actual heard someone using the voip of the game!
Planetside 1 voip was a disaster in the first months of the release and the truth is, voice macros were the only good way to communicate with your fellow squad members and surroundings.
The problem with voip that people can´t read the chat anymore! I say hi in my outfit channel, most people say hi back 30 minutes later, if the see it. On squads and platoons I write down the orders on the chat to each squad or individual platoon member, like b-3 go get a sunderer, if I don´t say on the mic: - Bravo Three get a sundered, people wont notice the order!
I am afraid that planetside 3 will not have written chat on the screen anymore.

The truth is, Tribes Ascent got a so good voice macro system that I never actual heard someone using the voip of the game!
When Tribes:Ascend was announced the old Tribes community rallied behind several points, with passion and bias that makes the PS1 community look apathetic. One of the big ones? The voice macros. The V- - - style voice macros were HUGE in Tribes 1, and expanded by player made scripts, then carried over and made better in Tribes 2, then Included and made game specific in Planetside, Copied Tribes1 and improved for Tribes Ascend... then thrown in, in what appears to be almost an after thought in PS2.
Really it is simply one of the many details that goes to the many small things that are annoying about the game. It is one of the things that WAS done very right. One of the things that was so helpful, so obvious a part of the original why is it not here? PS1 wasn't the first but it was such an essential part of the game.
I very much want the V- - - system back. I would prefer NOT to have the V-# as V-V-T is actually better than V-1 and V-V-Y is much much better than V-8 or -9 or whatever it is.
I miss them so much I type in /Y V-D-G and many other favorites... I will V-1 when someone starts healing me... but I want to V-V-E or V-V-F when its complete.
So much want these on the roadmap.

Again the development history and lineage of these games. In T1 and T2 the character screen you could choose from a few different voices. This was IMPROVED in PS1 where the voice you chose changed the attitude of the voice and often what was actually said. Made it fun to give you toon a personality.
PS2? A step backwards.

The VGS system in Tribes: Ascend is an example of how to do voice commands right. It's a superb system that's very fluid and easy to use.
It also shows the keystroke combination as a prefix to the message to allow for players to learn the system quicker, as they see the key combinations for the most commonly used commands regularly.
For example:
Keystroke VSD1: V (VGS Key) S (Self) D (Defend) 1 (Point A) = "I'll defend point A"
Shows in game as <Name> [VSD1] "I'll Defend Point A!"
That's it. 4 keystrokes and you've told your team/squad/proximity exactly what you're intending to do. It's a simple system that works very fast and allows for commands as well as personal communications and requests.

So much this.
The voices we currently have are not only garbage and repetitive, but they're also unsyncronized! I might taunt and say "You call yourself a soldier?" but the NC that I just killed will actually hear me say "That was painful to watch."
Just do it the way Planetside 1 was, jeez.
In fact, do EVERYTHING in this game the way Planetside 1 was, because that's why we're even here playing this game in the first place.

Well I do hope if they expand the VM system that we can have it fully customizable.
I know the old system had a very good element to it that almost required no thought to how it worked
V-voice macors:> -V quick sayings, -W warning, -A attack, -D Defend:>
but with the advent of more gaming centric computer equipment I hope we can create our own key mapping shortcuts also for the VM system.
I use the Cyborg V7 keyboard, which has some very handy shortcut buttons along the sides.

It would be great to be able to select certain VM's to map onto them.

I was playing over the weekend and one voice comm I'd love to see added sooner rather than later for vehicles that is deperatly needed I think is a simple variation of "STAND CLEAR!, Rolling out"
This is for all the poor sods who use vehicles for cover or those nice but sometimes naive Engineers who repairing your tank but position themselves right in your way of moving. This one could save live, heartache, abuse and that terrible feeling you get when you've pancaked a faction teammate.
You've been warned to to move away and what comes next ain't the drivers fault if you insist to stand under the wheels/tracks.
Higby keeps wanting us to use our Mics and talk to everyone and be social. And that's great but some people are jerks others don't have mics and some... some people just want to watch the world burn and play Ice Cream van music all day. (One of the many reasons people use 3rd party voice coms and turn in game voip off)
There are infinite times where I see an enemy (lets say a MAX) for a moment and haul ass back around the corner to not die, well I didn't "Q" him so how do I warn my fellow soldiers around me? Instinctively I press VWM to no avail >.<
Yeah its low on the priority list and yeah you want us to use internal VOIP but I don't think voice macros should be categorized as only for players who speak different languages, its an invaluable tool which can supplement the VOIP system not replace it.
Please add these (when you get time), Also change the current V then a number to original PS1 letter mechanics, its so much easier and intuitive than pressing V then reaching way over to 8 for sorry (or whatever the number is).
Link has all the old macros if you still haven't seen them.

Most desirable voice macros from PS1
V then V for Very Quick phrases (followed by letter below)
H - Hail (Salute, if nothing else this NEEDS to return... This <<<< VVH)
M - Move! (favorite macro for Locked down maxes)
V then W for Warnings (followed by letter below)
A - Incoming Aircraft!
C - Cloaked Enemy detected! (because you can't Q the little bugger)
M - Incoming MAX units
S - Warning! Sniper!
T - Incoming Troops
V - Incoming Vehicles
X - All Clear

Telling people over voip is a great idea but as was mentioned above, it has some issues ( sound quality too)
The fact is telling someone to "Stand Clear!" which IS needed badly, is alot quicker pressing 2/3 keys than holding down the voip and explaining the situation to the friendly engy about to get rammed into oblivion by your tank.
On the EU servers especially, there's alot of people who understand basic english and more from continental europe (some can speak better than us english infact) but when you get regional accents involved (there are many) alot of people don't understand what you are saying! example; Me - " Maatee! there's a tank over yon hill, gunna gank us get out t'road!" Continental EU player - " wtf ? Repeat pleaase ?" BANG DEAD!
So a simple "Stand Clear!" is easy to understand between borders, quicker to deliver the messege and a prompt explanation of the unfolding situation.

i feel like almost every problem with ps2 right now would not be a problem if the ps1 system had been used in the first place!
the old voice macro system was very intuitive and worked very well. you could shout out important things in milliseconds without having to read the menu every time to check what number stands for your desired call!
there was already a thread where the devs have asked us to tell them what voice macros we think we would need in ps2, but nothing from that thread was implemented. why?
and about higby who wants us to use the voicechat... this is a global game, and yesterday i was rolling with a french squad. i couldn´t read what they say, and i couldn´t understand a single word in voicechat. but a decent voice macro system would have helped a lot.
and there are a lot of people who simply don´t like to talk to others in the game or don´t have a mic. so those people have absolutely no chance to call out for special things fast.
Dodgy Commando

Aye, its an MMO, and the EU servers have a lot of different languages. Voice Macros provide a minimum level of guaranteed understanding.
Besides a lot of people do not use the in-game VOIP, so it has failed IMO.

Is there a technical reason for not doing this? Why the silence from the devs about it?
Shogun
2013-05-07, 12:16 PM
i guess it is just this mysterious fear of the devs for anything that worked good in ps1.
for i can´t think of any technical reason to not use the old system.
maybe it´s because of the casual bf crowd the devs seem to want to cater to. and having to press more than 2 buttons is considered to complicated for them?
you know, ps1 used a sequence of 3 keys. 1st bring up menu, second specify situation (need/warning-incoming/tactical order/misc), third specify object/unit.
that may be considered more than the casuals can handle. too many combinations possible.

Missing voice macros for even the most basic things is one of the reasons i don't log into this game anymore.
And when i then check into the forums to see what new things have been implemented, what do i see? No voice macros / proper empire communication, no supply / support gameplay, not even friggin' keybindings for loadouts and terminals or the changed lattice system.
Instead i see new hats, clothes and weapons. Oh, and a beach buggy. So seeya again in a few months i guess. :p
