Look ive read over and over again about people thinking that explosions and eye candy will cause the server to lag. The thing is that it will not. LEts say they put extremly hot explosions into the game. Everyone says this will make servers lag. IT WILL NOT!!! All the server has to do is tell ur puter were the explosion is. THen your computer makes it on your screen. This game could look like real life and not lag as long as gameplay remained the same and ur puter was strong enough.

but...but... think of the LAG!
but reallly, rockets COULD create lag for people with really cra... with *older* computers. couldn't they?

I think there's still a common confusion between "lag" and "low framerate."
Lag = Internet latency- data packets between server and client be slowed down due to net traffic.
Low framerate = your video card trying to keep refreshing a screen full of polygons, textures and effects under an onslaught of new polys, textures and effects.
Explosion graphics are not generated on the server. The data that makes up the explosion, however, is: the position, type and objects affected by it are bits of data streamed to the individual clients that can see it and the graphics are generated at that point. If people are worried about choppy framerates they probably need to start analyzing their video cards, CPU and RAM situation before the game comes out.

Then u make it an option, no?

then what about ppl complaining in Q3 at Excessive servers (servers where weapons is 5 times better) that u cant spam certain weapons coz it will create lag which it does?
And RtCW where ppl cant spam the flamethrower coz it creates lag?????

Well, of course, if there is spamming then there is the need for the server to start sending out the data for all the resultant explosions to all of the clients. That's a given. Hell, if enough people spammed the chat channel there'll be increased lag, but the topic of this thread isn't about spam-caused lag. It's about the concern by some that higher-than-average graphic fluff would cause lag-- which it shouldn't.

This game will not lag. I promise you, if you are experiancing any problems it is all client-side. You can chekc your fps in game, and if you aren't getting at least 60, then you need to turn down the juice on the graphics. Trust me, this game is still pretty even on low end systems. They will have a lot of effects that can be taken off and not missed.

Peacemaker is correct.
Any slow to down you experience due to alot of stuff happening on your screen (people, explosions etc) is due to your computer slowing down (aka: your memory, processor and video card cannot keep up.) It is not due to "lag".
Cheers!;)

Yes, please no more lag sucks threads. Besides, broadband>56k. I don't know what you go through by experience.

Still need to minimize clientside lag.
Even the top computers will die to 100s of players on screen if they are high enough resolutions with uber explosions all over the place...

That doesn't create LAG it creates client side graphics slow downs...
True it may create a small amount of lag but the big problem that is caused is your computer trying to render too many polys and/or graphics effects at one time. Nothing to do with the network or with lag.

Thanks for the backup guys. I just wanted to get my point across about how a server actualy runs. I think that the game trades server machines between continents (thus no time to load) so it shares the whole world between a whole bunch of machines. (either that or some how they are gonna rig like 5 or 6 p4 3.5 ghz proccessors together with a coolant system that if fails would make chenobal look like a camp fire)
