about THIS: http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/04/26/embargoed-dnphands-on-with-ccps-eve-oculus-rift-dogfighting-game/
I so much want this for PS2 (although Eve is an arguably better suited game for it), dog-fighting in my ESF would never be the same.
If there's anybody on Fanfest 2013 atm, please share your experience and tell us if you could see this work for PS2!

The biggest problem I see is Occulus Rift requires a steady framerate of 60 (Which would mean a practical framerate of 120 since it's drawing each frame twice in order to do the 3d effect, then add in the fact that V-synce is probably nessecary and....) otherwise it becomes jarring and disorienting to supposedly the point of nausea. So Ps2 would need to undergo some major optimizations in order for this to be possible.

EVE. MMO gaming at its finest. And now the devs are pulling something as awesome as this out of their butts? Holy christ!
Yeah, Thunder, i can definitely see FPSrates being a problem. Devs would have to make the game FORWARDS COMPATIBLE, and wait until the hardware which is good enough is affordable enough that it's a feature that'll be fully welcomed and useable by the majority.:)

That would be very nice of him actually. I know SOE is interested in Oculus Rift. Maybe CCP is exchanging their dev experience with them.

Nice idea. But if it requires stable 60fps then this will never make it into PS2 at this rate...

If they could make THAT the EVE experience with thousands of players the way EVE currently is, it'd be amazing. But let's face it, it's a long ways off. A game like what they're showing off can only really be done on small scale for now.
I must say, the Oculus Rift is pretty amazing, I had a buddy who demoed it on HAWKEN and said it was so incredibly real. Simulated 3D makes you really feel like you are flying.
But there is the constant issue of lag. The device on your head will probably take 25-50 milliseconds before it moves your screen appropriately, which is the same issue the Wii, PS Move and Kinect suffer from.
As a gamer that hates any sort of input lag, I'm against it. But if they could rectify that entirely (which I don't think they can for a while >.> ) I'll be all over it.

I honestly think the biggest problem with the OR is that you'll have a fucked up neck if you play with that thing for a whole weekend. Humans don't tend to respond well to having weights added to their head.

This.
It will have to be extremely light weight to be viable. And even then it will have to be designed with balanced weight front and rear.
If you have reasonably strong neck muscles you can wear something like a motorcycle helmet for an extended period or even a modern military helmet - but they are balanced and they weigh less than you might expect.

HOLY CRAP, I JUST BECAME EVEN MORE JEALOUS: EVE WILL HAVE THEIR OWN TV SERIES AND COMIC BOOKS BASED ON PLAYER STORIES! (http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/04/27/eve-online-tv-series-dark-horse-comic/)
Hurry up SOE, they're stealing all the cool ideas for PS2!

The Occulus is being developed mainly by John Carmack, right?

Well in SOE's defense, EVE has quite a lush and rich history of player shenanigans. PlanetSide 2 right now isn't capable of something like a TV series based on player stories. They need more sandbox.

"Do you remember the day when we fought all day and captured the Crown?"
"Ya that was awesome."
'Lets make it into a comic series."
"Well call it 1000 ways to capture the Crown."

I have been considering ways to bring "emergent gameplay" to Planetside.
That is all I'm saying. Especially since its entirely free to play. You have been warned.

Jeez that's awesome... I wish we could get a bit more RPG in our MMOFPS like that. The PS 2 lore could be so cool...

Exactly. EVE has had a long, long time to create something like this. They've had a decade of player created experience, and a decade of background story and a decade of updates and evolution of the game.
When EVE first started it was unrecognisable as the game they have now. It has more than enough time to become that kind of experience. PS2 has only been around for 5 months. There are simply not that many stories to be told, or enough content to create a world that those stories can be come to life in. Yet...

Yeah, yeah, we all know Eve has 10 years of huge sandbox behind it to build these stories.
I'm still jealous anyway, I think it's insanely cool they did this.

planetside 2 best game 2014 , i'm calling it . If they don't mess up the coverage , they will make the game grow enough to have a place with the big names. Heck by 2015 we might be most played game if they manage all the PS1 mechanics and make them better

The only problem is that by 2014 PS2 will be "old news". It will take a metric fuckton of marketing to get the buzz going again.

MLG competitions when ever that comes ;) League of legends came out in 2009 but only started to get people in and to be well know until the start of 2010. I see a bright future for PS2 if they don't mess up.

I have the power to travel through time. (http://www.twitch.tv/ccp/c/2208288) Also, if you're any kind of EVE fan, you really should have been watching fanfest this year on the stream. The EVE keynote is awesome.

Its not heavy at all. On wikipedia it says its 379g, anecdotally its been compared to ski goggles or a cardboard box strapped to your face, in articles/interviews/vlogs etc
Theres not much in the the plastic case you know, just two small lenses and a super thin screen. The power/usb/hdmi stuff is in a box down the cable.

I really admire what EVE is doing. What I hope SOE does is the inverted order of CCP. I would love to see SOE make a game similar to EVE that links to Planetside. In the future, procedural generation should be better and you can simply generate a new planet and do some manual touch ups. You could have the main factions fighting in empire space while other can go into 0 Sec and do EVE stuff.
Fingers crossed for SOE/CCP corporate merger. lol
EDIT: It just dawned on me; Starside. lol

No. This is a bad idea and will cause a lot of people to leave. SOE doesn't have the nerve needed to properly run eve.

It was a joke. lol
Besides, I would probably want CCP to be the controlling partner in a merger.
I have an Oculus Rift on order should receive in the next month or so.
Cant wait to experience the Rift.... Ive been following it for along time.
On a final note Valve have picked it up along with a large number of companies.
There is a huge interest in education and architecture also.
Cant wait and would LOVE to see Planetside within a few VR environment.. although games need to be designed differently for the rift from the ground up IMO.
BUT if SOE decide to somehow incorporate this in game it would truly be amazing.

How about an SOE/CCP merger with CCP at the top. Then we can let CCP show us how good they can screw up the greatest games in the world! Give em a shot! 8p
It would help if they redid eve to make all of it's current ship/balance issues be worked around cockpit and other fighting. Then the ships could actually be used for their actual purposes and add depth to fighting by letting formations and whatnot matter properly. It could be fun! that would really get me into deep space.
It would open all kinds of fun development and new economy stuff to make any mixes of computer/live combat to make the formations work. You could use one even if you flew it live. It could help focus fire properly(for what the actual formation flying is good for!). Then let guilds decide when and how to use the different flying techniques.

I just wish there were good space combat games. All the decent ones in the last few years are all single player :( One of my all time favorite games was Allegiance.
This is so so so wrong.
Forget all the terrible 3D you've experienced for the past half century, especially that insane 120fps requiring 3D (though at least we got 120hz LCD displays out of that, thanks nvidia!) this is nothing like that.
The Rift uses a single screen, split through software vertically. A single frame gives 3D because it's made from two different cameras in-game placed at your IPD apart. These frames have a distortion shader applied to each so that the the lens in each eyepiece undistorts it to allow your eyes to focus at infinity, as well as giving you a massive FoV without massive distortion. Using two cameras in-game instead of the normal one adds some load, but remember the screen is split in the middle vertically! Each camera is only rendering 640x800! (Like real eyes, more detail at the center of the lens, less at the edges)
The Rift devkit only has 720p, so most people will experience an increase in FPS if they normally play at 1080p. The consumer Rift should be equivalent to rendering to two 960x1080 monitors, but not exactly since you're still only pushing to one screen.
Since you're still just pushing out a single frame at a time, rather than timing the frequency of two alternating frames to some crazy electronic glasses, v-sync won't matter at all. (either you can push past whatever feels good for you or you can't, 60 FPS isn't important, good feeling FPS is)
The Rift is VR, not 3D.
(also I can't wait to where Dust and Planetside are in 10 years, fighting inside a player's Titan in Eve Online to damage it vs ??? flying between conts over ocean?)

i totally love the concept of oculus rift being used as headtracker while in a cockpit!
and it´s right that the minimum of 60 fps is not needed because there are no shutterglasses to be synced with.
the only problem i see is the lack of reallife awareness while your eyes are totally covered. try typing on the keyboard with the oculus rift on your head!
you have to switch from keyboard/mouse to joystick and back? you would have to take of the rift to do so. that would suck and kill the great immersion.
will the rift feature a small camera to simulate real-vision by the press of a button? or will the devs need to implement some crazy gesture controlling to match your avatar´s body to your real bodypositions in combination with a kinect or a leap motion?
