the face-upload is optional. you could still buy your avatar with helmet on.

... or make photos of your girlfriend/inflatable doll/favorite celeb or whatever. unlimited possibilities.

You don't have to send a pic of you. Just get a front and side of some hot chick you want you character to look like.

Well, I don't know anything about uploading your face... But I do know there are companies that can 3D print the 3D game data of your character. People have been doing it on WoW for years.

Acquiring that 3D data in Planetside may be a little bit more difficult since you can change your class at any time.

that´s why i suggest that soe should make money with this.

they could easily make a little editor where you can equip your soldier with your favorite stuff and let it pose like you want (a set of standard poses, maybe even an additional manual posing editor to make custom poses).

i don´t think soe would have a problem finding a 3d printing company to team up with, if they don´t have the knowhow or hardware to do it all on their own.

3d printing has developed to extreme quality by now.

it is really time to start the revolution of merchandising 2.0.

george lucas became extremely rich by starting the merchandising revolution 1.0 with starwars and the mass of figures and other merchandising stuff.

now the technology is far enough to enable us to offer custom merchandise to every player! it will be the next big thing for sure! and don´t tell me it´s too expensive... look at the prices of actual action figures! the price gap between those and a custom 3d printed model isn´t that big anymore! and a lot of people would pay double price if the action figure had their real face!

Another problem with the face thing, I use the maniac mask on my Engy. Engy is my favorite class. Loyal soldier camo (TR) on the maniac mask is insanely awesome looking. I don't think I need my face on it.

not a problem at all. just add a few poses with helmet off to the editor.
and the face upload would not be needed if you want to have a figure with helmet or maniac mask on. it would all be up to the customer. the models of all this stuff are already there, modern 3d printers can even print multicolored objects in one pass, so it is just a matter of how many options you put into the editor.
if you want to take it further, it would even be possible to build a manned flash or harasser, complete with manned rumbleseat.

even moving parts are possible, like adjustable limps or movable wheels. can also be printed in one pass, completely assembled.

This would have to be a high station cash purchase to make up for the individual review time necessary to ensure trolls don't take pictures of their junk and auto upload them. I wouldn't want the constant game patches or longer render times it would take to transfer all the individual player skins to my and everyone else's client. Might be more trouble than its worth but I'd much rather see this than in game ads for Mountain Dew on my reaver if it came down to SoE needing the cash.

you still don´t understand what we are talking about!

nothing is being uploaded to anyones client, nothing would change in the game.

we are talking about an external editor that could import your characters stuff to be able to order a reallife 3d-printed figurine of your playermodel for your reallife desk or shelf. click, read and understand the link in the OP! they are selling startrek figurines that you can customise with your own face on them.
