I have heard all of you talk about open beta and I was wondering..... what is it? This is the first game i have been interested enough in to follow this closely so this is the first I have heard of it. Hopefully now I can do more than nod and smile when you guys talk about open beta. Flame Away. I deserve it.

Hehehe, no flames.... yet. Thanks for your reply. Does it mean that most people who apply to it will get it or is it still a pretty small chance? And do you have to pay for it or get to play it for free? :D

Your chances should be very good to get into open beta. Open beta is mainly a stress test, so they will want a huge number of people.
Currently, people are downloading the game for closed beta. Open beta will probably be on cd. Because of this, it is possible (though I haven't heard any official news about this) that they will require you to pay for the cd and shipping. Games in the past have required payment, so who knows??
ok, your first flame then....

there, that wasnt so bad now was it? glad to oblige.

Wtf? Dorkbayne is the biggest n00b here, and only got to Veteran level by spamming. Thank you, that is all.

Being a noob when you're a recruit and soldier is okay, you dont know much. But being a noob when you spammed your way to Veteran like Dharkbayne is a bad thing.

Ok thats that, I'm relieved again now.
Where was I? Oh yes, Alpha Beta etc, letters of the greek alphabet are often used in computing to distinguish phases of testing.
Alpha usually refers to initial builds of the software, internal only.
Beta usually refers to builds of the software which are usable/playable but not releaseable, may need optimisations, but can support many testers.
Some companies will specify that their beta version software can be released to the general public. Some software will remain permanently in beta, recieving constant updates. Such as Teamspeak. People can use their software because usually they will provide some feedback to teh developers.
Companies selling their software will not likely want beta versions released to the public, as they are unfinished. They will have their own testing teams.
Open Beta is a gaming term coined to describe the phase of online game testing in which the general public can participate and therefore rules such as NDAs can be relaxed. You do not have to be approved before entering, etc. Usually a week or 2 before product launch for massive stress testing purposes.
