I was excited to hear about PS2 players getting 6 months of PS1. Figuring there must be tons of people taking advantage of this deal I logged on Gemini and made a TR soldier. Once I got through the tutorial (note this is my first time with PS1) and hit Instant action I was greeted with...

Nothing. There were no players I could see, no groups to find. I captured a NC base hoping to attract someone but noone came. Does anyone play?

Died because a bug where an interceptor aircraft which was intended to do very little damage to ground targets was capable of taking out main battle tanks in about 2 seconds, which is something nothing except an OS is capable of doing. Mysteriously popped up right around when the 6 months started, and when unfixed for weeks, which caused a massive amount of population hemorrhaging.

Also, all of the content from the expansion Core Combat was mysteriously disabled, and as far as I know, was never fixed.

So it's unsurprising that so many new players left immediately, despite the fact that most that I talked to said they greatly preferred it to PS2.

I apparently showed up 2 months late for the party, that's unfortunate, does anybody still play anymore?

Minigun,

Question: how and when did you hear about the free time?

I didn't, I stopped browsing these forums after the embarrassment that is PS2, didn't even make it through beta.

Nostalgia made me want to come back and browse the Tech and off topic subforums when I happened to click up here and saw the free time sticky. I remember coming by early in May and there being all sorts of F2P petitions for PS1 but they had been ongoing for months, I even signed it, but didn't think they would actually get any support from SOE.

Seems as though i missed my final chance to play, the game is terribly glitchy for me, I can't even set my sensitivity for my mouse or set any keybinds.

Funny the only way they can keep us from playing PS1 is to break it.

PS1 is SOE's Anne Boleyn. Murdered because someone people imagined having fun with her.

In all honesty. Theres just not enough people playing it. Enclave outfit logged on 1 night and fucked off within hours and it still wasn't a big fight with an organised platoon.

Essentially I dnt think anyone can be bothered to play unless the masses are told and it welcomes any new people in as well.

I didn't.

That's too bad, but not unexpected as almost nobody did.

Pretty much why absolutely no one is in there. It went free but at the same weekend as a big PS2 patch and double XP weekend.

You didn't really miss anything because there was nothing to miss. I don't think it hit 200 total online since it went free.

People log in and see that one empire has hacked everything and then log out again. Usually the NC. Well done NC, I don't see what enjoyment you get from having no one to fight. Each to their own.

I say it loud now: when the free time ends, his forum will get the usual folks posting again that Smed promised to make the game F2P, and that it would really make PS1 big again, if they would just try.

Then the theorys start that they just wont do it as that would eat players away from PS2, all logic will be cast aside and we once again have a small mob of fools yelling crap.

Then after a few months everything will die down again. Maybe, in a few years, even the last guy will understand a simple fact: Planetside 1 died the day Planetside 2 went into beta, and there is absolutly nothing ANYONE (not you, not SOE) can do to make it big again. Its dead, thats a fact. Remember the good times, forget the bad times, and enjoy your memories.

Free time that the majority of PS1 players didn't even find out about. I think one dude in our outfit got an email from PSU, that was it.

You want a fact? SOE is not making PS1 F2P the right way. Free on Steam, blast email every account, fix the damn Wasp and Core Combat bugs, make Core Combat free as well. Then figure out how to monetize.

But SOE doesn't care about PS1 because their stockholders don't. I don't blame them for that.

Keep sending Smedley Emails. Get Planetside 1 on Steam.

I kept logging in during the free time until there were about a platoon of players on max. All SOE has to do is put the game on Steam for free and it will have a steady amount of players. Giving everyone free time without letting them know obviously won't do it.

If a game goes free to play in the ether but no one is there to play it did it really happen?

I'm not sure putting it on steam in its current state would do anything either. Without at least a decent base, new players coming in will not be getting the right game, and nothing to draw them in.

After the disappointment that was this last free2play time i'm leaning towards the 'just shut it down for good' camp. Though maybe that costs more time/money than just leaving it up which would be the only reason it is still here.

We actually tried getting our PS2 outfit into some PS1 action, but pings in the 200 to 300ms range simply aren't much fun to play. Especially in a shooter.

Whenever I logged on, it was general inf combat so I doubt the interceptor aircraft caused people to not play again. If your a new player like me, you wouldnt have known how to access Core Combat anyway unless asking a vet, but there would be maybe 2 people in that content anyway.

I preferred things like the touches to bases to make them feel like bases (mess room, sleeping quarters) When vets talk about making characters unique because of the cert system, I was freely changing between cert loadouts and even being BR10.. Still felt like I was a mash of HA, Medic, Eng rolled into 1 class.. Very little uniqueness that was always praised by the vets. It has some great features but hopefully they will be implemented into PS2.

Also the shooting mechanics were god awful. I enjoy playing old school games, but damn it was a joke.

All outdoor combat was impossible due to constant interceptor exploitation. So half of the game was broken.

Also, I believe for the first 7(?) days of a new character, you're free to learn and unlearn certs as often as you please. After that period of time, you must wait 6 hours before unlearning another, which makes it nigh impossible to do nearly everything at br25, let alone 10.

You are betting on a rigged race... and you know it.

I agree that they "could" do more to get some more players into PS1 again.

Mass emails, Steam, actual dev team fixing stuff again, F2P, etc.

But theres a point where you just need to stop. You cant force a game back alive. Doing the things that PS1 really needs to raise from the dead are expensive, and obviously a very risky investment. A risk SOE isnt willing to take.

My hopes are still up that PS2 will catch that little thing that made PS1 so special. Devs are clearly reading the forums and doing the things players want, so its just a question of time.

Thats the race i bet on.

PS1 was special because it rewarded individual skill as well as teamwork. PS2 rewards only numbers. END OF!

I think you will lose your money. The devs are trying hard but also trying (seemingly) to do things different from PS1.

Look at the events. They're ok, and provide a motivation if like me you're still levelling up, but what happens when I hit the limit? I don't know if I will want to play and clearly the same didn't apply with ps1.

And another thing, this World Domination Series, it all feels like they have to do anything except what worked in ps1, I know they've promised continental lattice but they spend their time doing this!

And further, I could say 'and further' multiple times, I miss CR5 chat; there I'd said the unsayable. PS2 command is not the same.

For all that it's new and shiny and bright the soul is missing.

One thing i only realized a couple of days ago and showed me again that soe is doing everything they can to kill off this game (why they are not just pulling the plug at this point though is beyond me - it's like they're intentionally trying to piss off old PS1 players);
Planetside 2 players who never had a PS1 account don't get free time. I mean what's up with that?? I talked to several people now in PS2 who really would like to try out the predecessor, but surely don't want to put down cash to do so (not to mention the confusing process of subbing for PS1).

Is it really too much to ask to also give PS2 subscribers free PS1 time? Many of them want to atleast check out where PS2 is coming from.
Or are they afraid their pops drop even further then? What's the problem here? Combined with no effort at all being made at fixing the wasp bug or core combat i can't come up with any other explanation than borderline hatred towards this game.
It may not even be their real intention to be an ass, but the whole way they treated ps1 so far surely feels insulting to a fan.

Edit: On this note, greets to the 3 TR and 4 VS i played with on saturday. Desolace was fun with you guys. =)

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that you just need to have a PS2 account to get the 6 months access to PS1.
If I am indeed wrong, then I would like to find the guy that signed me up but never told me about it.

The people i talked to didn't get free PS1 time (they didn't previously had PS1 accounts), and the news post only mentions "former Planetside 1 players" aswell:

http://www.planetside-universe.com/news-planetside-1-free-for-six-months-3025.htm

So yeah, no idea about your case. Maybe you just had an old trial account idling around?

Isokon

I can't confidently deny the possibility, though I really don't remember. I was a beta tester for Everquest 2 and my SOE account dates back to that time.
They might have "thrown in" some trial access there...
