I haven't seen this posted here yet. Source (http://m.joystiq.com/2013/08/20/playstation-4-launch-window-line-up/)

The launch game "window" is from Nov 14th system launch date until the end of the year.

Will multithreading optimization be ready by then? I feel the rest of the game is mostly ready outside of whatever console jockey features they decide to add like auto aim, 360 no scope, etc. I want SoE to succeed but in the back of my mind I see them rushing another launch way too early and with shitty performance issues that make people stay away from Planetside for good.

Discuss.

So the people working on the port, do they do the optimisation too?? or do they wait for pc to be optimized then port?

Yeah it has been sort of vague what they are calling a "launch" title. US launch is the 15th of November and the 29th in Europe and it looks like anything released between then and the end of the year can be termed a launch title.

Another thing too I have been reading is that almost half the 8GB RAM is going to be consumed by the OS (which is a customized version of FreeBSD 9.0). This is significant in that the RAM (GDDR5) is also shared with the GPU so if they decided to allocate say 1GB to GPU for PS2 then that doesn't leave much left for the game itself.

Call me old fashioned, but unless I can play it the day I walk out of the store with the new console it's not a launch title.

The timer is ticking and it's certainly a possibility that they won't have the optimization done by launch and thus be forced to release a rushed version. Time will tell.

Its more to do with the fact that being an 'early adopter' for a new console, or "buying on launch", doesn't end on day 1 :P Launch windows make fine sense.

Mind you people still make the distinction between launch day titles and launch window titles.

I don't think we can make any call on the progress of the PS4 optimization, the recent optimization news for PC is obviously just to do with Smed playing the game for the first time in months lol.

If the game is unplayable they'll probably push it back. They are targeting launch but they don't have to make it. It's a DD F2P game so they have a lot more flexibility when they can launch it.

Hadn't this been confirmed in the past? I always thought PS2 was going to be a launch title.
November is four months away. Assuming they have put the beginnings of it in the engine already, I think they have a clear shot at launch day PS2 on PS4.

Yet, supporting the PC version and developing this version simultaneously makes it more likely to see it in late December.

Ummm where do you think the majority of PS2 devs are working?

Most PS2 devs arent skilled at optimizing.

Unfortunately, I agree with OP. No water. No strategic metagame. No lattice for Amerish, even. No multithreading. And even after going like gangbusters better than a year, the devs are gonna have all this ready in FOUR FREAKING MONTHS. Yeah. Right. They need another six on top of that, bare ass minimum. But they won't get it. Again. And we'll be stuck with three-four servers for PC and PS4 existing alongside each other, both with dwindling pops.

They went public too soon because of the Alpha Squad debacle, and they're going public too soon with this. And that's a management decision. A Smed decision. His stink is all over this. I wonder how many franchises that fat stupid grinning bastard is going to destroy before they finally fire him.

I give Planetside 2 two years.

PS4 is a separate team, but it'll only be optimization for one chip set - the PS4. Hopefully the PC devs will extract some additional learning benefit out of it though.

within those 2 years, PS2 will most CERTAINLY have all of that stuff you want in. hell, i bet we will have all of those features in by mid next year at the MOST.

Launch was mentioned a couple of days ago but clearly the 2-4month timeline for "optimization" was a distraction. :D

Here is an interview with Smed regarding user and revenue distribution between PC and PS3 on another of their titles, DCUO. 70/30 and you wonder why they want PS2 on PS4?

"The single fastest growing segment of our business is DC Universe Online on the PS3," says John Smedley, president of SOE. "70 percent of our revenue [on that game] comes from the PS3 and 70 percent of our players come from the PS3."

Because the company has been offering deep free-to-play experiences longer, it also has worked out a system to more quickly approve updates - something that could aid it in the next generation.

"One of the advantages we have had is we were the first with Free Realms," says Smedley. "With that, we've helped the QA group set up the system. What happened is there's a trust level that builds up. They do certain checks every time - but over time, if you don't screw up, they start to trust your [internal] QA."

Consoles, he says, actually have some notable advantages over the PC when it comes to free-to-play. There's consistently stable hardware and software and the installed base is constantly growing. Most importantly, though, the barrier to microtranscation purchases is lower.

"There's a higher likelihood of having a payment system on file," he says. "And since these are dedicated gaming systems, you're more predisposed to try something, whereas when you're on the PC, you might get distracted by, say, Facebook or something."

I have no doubt there's more market with PS3 however them numbers that he said are like he just spewed them out without thinking... 70 % revenue / 70 % of playerbase from PS3. I played DC online (for about 5 mins) on PS3 and i'm pretty sure it was F2P if my memory serves me correctly:groovy: I never paid a thing and i'm sure there were many, many more who did the same. That's why i don't under stand them figures.
