I thought earlier PS was going to be run on an entirely different engine. I also heard they turned down the graphics, as you can see in the very early Ps shots the graphics look at lot more intense and VERY different.

they didn't keep it because imagine the strain on a graphics card when 70 people are firing realistic flame effects in the same SOI. it would bring a Radeon 9800 to its KNEES, kick it in the groin, and walk away laughing.
