View Full Version : Anyone think the whole ANT idea is stupid?

anyone else think its stupid? who really wants to drive back and forth from the base getting energy for the base? I, for one, think this is a rather stupid idea IMO and think it should be taken out.

ANTs make Seige tactics viable. without them, why bother seiging the enemy when they have unlimited gear and tanks?
Smiley
2003-04-05, 07:32 PM
yeah, it prevents them from just pumping out uber amounts of vehicles because the vehicles require the energy that the ants transport. resource gathering in an fps, sounds like a crazy yet fantastic idea to me
thats a atrocious cut job on your sig pic zylos

ANTs give another level to the game play, now you will have to have supply lines, thus escort them, attack them, protect them, break through sieges, perform sieges, and have a good portion of your forces rerouted just to let the front line troops keep fighting.

Let's not also forget that we haven't played the game yet(most of us) so we don't know how well the devs brought everything together.
I don't understand how u can be critical of something you have yet to experiance. You may end up liking driving the ANT's.

Woa wait. the ants dont support vehicle energy, its the warpgates that do. Those silos in the base are for the base only. Thats why you cant leave continents because once so far out the warpgates are too far and the vehicle just shuts down. Therefore your screwed.
But I think the ANT thing is kool, for once its the main place to get ambushed!:D

2003-04-05, 08:18 PM
true, the ANTs dont support vehicular energy, they support energy used to CREATE vehicles and quips.

2003-04-05, 08:19 PM
But i beleve building a vehicle or whatever you do to get it takes up energy so does getting new equipment,so no ANT run for awhile means not enough energy to build tanks and get equipment ect
BUGGER
2003-04-05, 08:22 PM
oh.....yea, so it supports the base only. That means inventorys, power, vehicles, etc.
Well, everybody willing to do an ANT run, raise your hand with pride!

I don't really care. This concept was introduced fairly recently, and still may be modified but I seriously doubt it. Also once a base has been powered, it stays powered for a very long time. I'm assuming about 10 hours. So it will give you something to do at 3 AM when every other normal person has gone to bed.

*points to sig* happy?
oh and about the ANT system, you guys are probably right. It adds a little more fun to seiging bases. Also i had the impression you'd have to do an ANT run every 5-10 minutes, not a few hours. If thats the case, I'm fine with it. ;)
MrVulcan
2003-04-05, 09:48 PM
well, if the base is under a major battle, you will need ants right and left (or at least every 20-30 min or so), but if you are at a base with no battles, it only needs an ant once in a blue moon. This is from all of the spawns, vech creations, weapons created, turrits going off, etc etc (thats how i understand it anyways, could be wrong)
It's way of limiting the abilities of bases, or else some of the bases would way too powerful.

True that. And you don't want people to hole themselves up in a base or else it'd be immpossible (almost) to capture the base.

I am probably going to look for an ANT runs in the beggingig of my plying time anyway, It's a good way to get expiernce, explore and get used to all the continents, and Hell somebodies got to do it. Besides, i like the idea of defending a convoy better than defending a base

they need to make hybrid vehicles powered by both the warpgate and oil from iraq. that way, they can cross water ;)
im sure they brought oil with them when they entered the wormhole

*raises her hand* hey if we need an ant run I'm your gal! Keepin the troops up and running is one of the most important aspects in keeping control of a particular sector. Course a break to go into combat every so often doesn't hurt either

well said, my point exactly.
And for the ant idea, I dont think its great, just okay.
And I for 1 would love drivin it 2 a warp gate, u get a lot of beps then, tho I would rather escort it.
only 6.52 percent on "I hate the idea".
I took I dont care coz I think they could have made some other thing that had made the game better than the ant, somethin similar 2 the ant thingie.

hey, as we're on the topic of ANT runs, my outfit is prob going to specialize in ANT runs (still going to the front line as well though), so if any base is under siege and needs power desperatley then just give [BOA] a shout.
Obvously we won't be perfect at it from the start, but we'll get more regular practice at it than any other outfit who does it only when absolutley necessary.
We'll prob also try our hands at other support roles in the game but we're just focusing on ANT runs for now.

to my knowledge you need ANT runs because when a base runs out of energy, the enpire who owned it loses ownership, so its crucial when trying to lock continents down, also, i think you get a happy amount of experiance out of it too. One easy way to do it is to get a Galaxy pilot, and shove an ANT in the back, and just fly to a gate, fill up, and back again

I thought bout using a galaxy but wouldn't it be slower than jus driving? I'd imagine the galaxy would be quite a slow aircraft otherwise they'd be too good at what they do.

1- You don't have to make ANT runs if you don't want to.
2- Unless your base is under constant attacks an ANT run won't be needed every 2 secs, just once in a while to keep systems up.
3- It's a great thing simply because it adds a whole new tactical situation. Attackers now have a 3rd target to attack on a base (1st and 2nd being gen and terminal) and defenders now have a 3rd item to defend.

I think it would be great with some kind of garage where u could put an ant in, and whenever the base needs energy it will power up from that ant, thoose couldent b destroyed by weapons, only by hacking from inside the base. Mayb 4 an expansion.

Having ANTs also pushes the battles out from just the bases, too:
1. If the ANTs are being moved in overland, then you might want to search them out and get them before they make it to the base. Of course, this might make transporting ANTs an armored column affair, leading to good battles.
2. If Galaxies are being used to transport these things, they become high-priority targets. everyone will be shooting these down.
So having supply lines adds more to the game than an ever-powered generator.

I think having the ANT's is a great addition. It add's to the gameplay.
I was a bit skeptical at first, but i think it was a good idea.

This was discussed, but not confirmed. We're not even sure how bad the explosion of the ANT will be unitl the game/beta comes out.

Even though I have not played the game, I can easily see how it works well. If a team is defending a base with dozens of troops, it will take an army of greater size or skill to overcome that. So, when the enemy has a base camped, simply cut off its supply route and voila! That base no longer belongs to them, allowing your squad with the help of a nearby AMS to siege the area.
One idea, I think it would be a blast to round up some buddies and have a huge ANT run, like 30 side-by-side ANT crap mobiles plowing through a field and refueling bases, awesome!

First, are jumbo jets in real life faster than cars? Yes. Are galaxy's faster than buggies? Yes. Oh wait, ae they faster than ANTs then? HELL YEA!!!! I mean, remembevr the ANT is like a truck. And even knowing that the galaxy is the slower most of the air, it got less pull pulling it than the vehicles do on the ground.
And defending a convoy is much better than defending a base....atleast funner....
