Do PlanetSide's graphics suck? More importantly, do we care?

Hey folks. I've heard some people in the past deriding PS's graphics as being rather simplistic. Looking at the screenshots, I sort of see their point: the textures seem to be slightly low-res, and a lot of character models don't seem too polygonally complex.

But I find myself not caring one bit. I am a member of the Olde Schoole - I remember when consoles displayed at roughly 256x256 and characters were limited to four colors. Anything 16 bit or higher looks beautiful to my eyes. I personally don't care if they use the Quake 1 engine for PS - the gameplay looks so incredibly good I'll play it regardless.

Anyone share a similar sentiment?

I think the graphics look shweet. Maybe I just don't have the 'critical eye' or something, but to me they look as good as anything else I've seen (Which admittedly aint much), but hell, they're better than tribes 2 by a long shot.

I cannot believe people are saying 'dood teh grafx suxorz'. PS isn't a MMOPGCBMP (Massively multiplayer online processor/graphics card benchmark program)! I mean, the graphics aren't orgasmic or anything, but maybe you've been taking too much eyecrack to appreciate eyecandy any more.

In summary: WTF n00b PS gfx r0x0rz j0r b0x0rz! It looks good to me, and if you want to complain, go ahead, I'll be sitting back and enjoying it.

I'll reserve my opinion on the graphics until I am actually in game.

However, I believe you and I share a similar view. There are features in this game that brought me to the level of dedication I am currently at and it has absolutely nothing to do with graphics. The massive multiplayer aspect of the game is what I am most attracted too, but other portions of the game have made me the most excited I have been about a game since Tribes 1. I will say this, I played WWIIOL for over a year, the realism and the MMO world were what kept me around. It's painfully obvious how awful the graphics are/were on that game.

I think there is a good mix of good graphics and quality gameplay to attract fans that find both important. But personally, I think the graphics looks pretty nice considering what all went into programming this game.

everyone seems to forget that screen shots:

A) never do a game justice, ever.

B)during the beta alot of the screens are on some lower settings

C)these are about as good as MMO gfx get

D) Most people with the judgement havent played the game and once they do they will shut up (just a guess) hopefully

No it is not Doom III, but for a MMO they are fantastic........to say they suck is just someone looking to flame for no reason.

From the acreenshots it looks like the game will look great in motion, there are alot of games where you just can't tell. Asheron's Call 2 looks incredible in screenshots... but it's not the best when you actualy play it... hehe I never made it passed the first month.

Planetside looks nice, but simple, without things being TOO simple just to increase the smoothness of the game. it should be nice, and I can't wait to see it in motion without the fuzzyness of .mpg video.

It's irritating to me, cause the graphics seem as good if not better than most of the popular fps out there, whit the exception of ut2003. Why are they chosing to complain about planetside?

But worse, is when I see somebody say PS is "Tribes with a monthly fee", as tho somehow they missed the words Massively Multiplayer part.

But worst of all, is tribers who say the "Tribes with a monthly fee thing". They like tribes, so why would they hate a tribes-like game on a massive scale? Some of them don't want to pay the fee sure, but many of them just think the game will suck. :confused:

It just pisses me off a bit when I see this stuff. :(

I don't think PS's advances in gaming are graphics. People coming from FPS games such as UT2k3 might be a little disappointed with the graphics, but anyone coming from some type of MMOG will probably appreciate the graphics, knowing that gameplay is much more important.

Actually, the draw distance is pretty amazing in this game. Those are the kind of graphical features I like... ones that affect gameplay (being able to see the tower you need to get to way in the distance) as opposed to pure eyecandy.

Considering not only is it an MMO, but one set to be an fps mainly at that. I personally think what I've seen so far of screenshots is Very Very impressive.

Granted no it isn't Doom3, but when you take the gameplay into account, hundreds of characters on screen at once, all duking it out in some fantastic firefight, you can't possibly have graphics on the side of doom3 and have it be playable.

That said, from what I've seen I still think the game looks spiffy, possibly even better than some games that Aren't! mmo's.

Just my 2 cents.

The gameplay is what counts to me. Frankly, if the graphics are decent and all of the command features, and teamwork features work out I will love this game. It is what I have really been looking forward to for a while. A team based game where you are not simply trying to outsmart the AI, but trying to outsmart the other players, which are almost always more creative than any AI. Come on, is anyone truly interested in this game simply because they expect it to be as someone so eloquently put it "eyecrack"?

in my oppinion, its a MMOFPS, there anrnt many of them, so this is the opening for some to come, so for ammofps the graphics are great, there are 1000's of people trying to play at once, the only games where that happens are things like everquest where they cant use good graphics, so ps is heaps good. and i have to buy a new computer to run it, course its gonna be good.

Wasteland is still the best game ever made, and by today's standards, its graphics are El Shittastic. I don't care.

The lower quality the graphics, the lower the hardware requirements, and the easier it is to play with more people involved. Stick figures throwing rocks at each other is fine with me if the game is fun.

I find that people who tend to harp on graphical quality tend to have IQ's roughly equal to spoiled cabbage, and if you take a tinfoil gum wrapper and wave it in front of their eyes, they'll shut up for an hour. Sadly, many of these people are game developers who insist on putting in flashy eye candy ahead of such trivial things as stability, compatibility, story, and fun.

The graphics dont suck, its beautiful - just enough pretty things to make the world seem real but not so much that it detracts from the action...

from playing the beta i would say they are as good as any online game out there that has the same level of action etc...

and no i dont care what they look like... after watching a massive battle for Itan yesterday i didnt give a damm about how it all looked, it was the game itself that got me immersed....

Like I said. For an MMO, especially one trying to pull off what PS is the graphics are pretty damn good looking if you ask me.

Considering Hamma is in the beta I'll have to take his word for it. Plus pretty much most of the ss's look pretty damn good if ya ask lil ol me.

I think the graphics are very nice. One thing for sure though is the character models and character animations are the best I've seen in a FPS IMO.

I kind preferred gauss rifles/ flamethrowers because it was funny to watch people burn and run around....

crap, I wonder where the heck I can get a copy of that to see if I could run it again...

and the end of the game where the enemy syndicate duded would come at you but they all had the self destruct bombs, and when you minigunned them there would just be these collossal chain-reactor explosions... heh. Yeah, that was a good game. I remember the expansion being totally impossible though.

Wasteland did and does rock though. I still have characters that I play through the game like 30 times with that are so buff that can pretty much go through the game nekkid and kill everything with their hands if they wanted too. :D

To say that the graphics in PS are shit is rediculous. They may not make your eyes bleed like Unreal 2, but they certainly dont suck. The game looks amazing in the videos.

Also, GRAPHICS DO NOT MAKE THE GAME!... DOA:XBV is proof....the graphics were good enough to give us....certain feelings :rolleyes: :thumbsup: :drools: ...but the gameplay was utter crap. Tetris was just a bunch of blocks, but its a classic!

And to further note, Unreal's graphics only look as good as they do since every damn thing is pixel shaded beyond belief. oooh shiny! give me a break!

From what I've seen so far movie footage (downloaded the huge gamespy movie and the other trailer) and of the screenies. I still think PS holds quite a bright torch to most of the fps'es out there, mmo or not.

And this is coming from someone who isn't really into fps. I'm more of a rpg'er which is what attracted me to PS in the first place. The ability to level up my character and make a difference for my empire. Quite the twist on the usual slaying dragons & such that I'm used to.
