Sad indeed but not entirely unexpected. It was PSU and Planetside where I met Hamma, Jennyboo, Tbeast and the DragonWolves and it's where I still am.
It was a good run Hamma. You and your team should be proud!

Is it because people focused on Reddit more?

I'd be lying if I didn't admit Reddit had something to do with it over the past couple years, it's very difficult to compete with as a standalone fan website. I've written some articles on it as well I posted here.
To be honest though it's a large combination of things. From many members leaving the development team, to the game's population decrease, and the vitriol of online communities in general now.
I don't intend to be a complete stranger, I just felt like it was finally time to admit this site had run it's course. I was only posting crazy top headlines and not really involved in day to day news at all anymore.

While I haven't been as talkative on here as I was back in the pre-alpha days, it's sad to see this site closing. I'd like to thank Hamma and everyone else that kept this place up and running and being a key component to the Planetside community for so many years. Thank you.

I had some vibrant discussions here, mainly with PS1 vets, some of who never could accept that Planetside 2 is just a different game, for a different audience in a different time. And times have indeed also changed when it come to fan sites. I consider it actually a big achievement for PSU that the site managed to stay so active for so long. In fact, I still wear my in-game PSU decal with pride and will continue to do so. O7

Thank you! :D
I encourage folks to come hang out on our Discord server. It's going to "replace" IRC and our public TeamSpeaks server. I'll be a bit more active on here vs IRC :)

I'd just like to extend my thanks to Hamma and to Jennyboo. PSU has been a remarkable thing over the years and has been incredibly useful both in PS1 and PS2 and especially in those days of transition between the two when it was at it's most valuable.
As we say where I come from, thanks Marra.

Thx Hamma, Jennyboo, Gryphon and of course another who was an important part of the team, the voice of the Auraxis Global Network, Marsman .
You all provided a great community platform from when I first started playing PS1 all those years ago on Markov.

Wow I cannot believe the day has finally come. I mean the signs were there, but still, to hear it officially, cant compare to that.
Thank for dedicating over a decade of your life to this site and the community.
Question: in the event that PSU eventually closes shop (forum and everything), would you consider releasing a forum dump of all public information for archival purposes?

Wow, all good things must come to an end so where's my champagne! Srsly, this site has been awesome to use and really an asset to promoting PS2. Good luck in the future and see you on the battlefield.
It was fun, while it lasted Hamma. Best of luck to you in the future.

Well this is a shame. I didn't really use the site much, but I know others did. For Planetside related things, I will be looking towards the future of Chord's PSForever. Hopefully we can fix PS1 from there. Thanks for allowing us to have a PS1 forum, especially from the time from DB's official PS1 forum closure and the opening of the PSForever forums. And thanks for other things, things I'm very much sure I'm not even aware of :D. Here's to the only multiplayer game I care about.

Well I vividly remember asking Virago why in the hell was SOE supporting a fansite over official forums. Even posted on official forums and he cautioned me this was a decision being made at the top. I reluctantly accepted it only to find a short time later Reddit was being preferred. My kudos to you Hamma for sticking it out through all that. A truer fan of this franchise will not be had!

<3 Hamma and crew for all the hard work over the years. I haven't frequented this place in a long time, but it was a big part of my life back in the PS1 days and I'm thrilled to have been a part of it. You really created something special and should be very proud.

What level of crazy are we talking here? I've been known to do crazy, a lot! :)
Be a shame to see this website go. Not only did it allow me to show my passion for PS1, it allowed me to go as far as I could with loving PS2.
Great site I remember all the names. And wont forget any of it regardless of what SOE done to me.
Ill never forget both games, PS1 more than PS2, but still amazing times on both.
Best of luck Ham & Jen and the rest, its amazing what differences a few years can make.

I'm guessing by the posts I've read that the game hit some bad times? I hate to say it, but even when PS2 was in development it seemed it was going in the wrong direction. We all saw it, we all commented, we tried to tell them. But as big companies do, they never listen to the communities that know best. PS2 just wasn't enough like PS1 (very addictive game). Anyway hope all goes well for the future. Ill keep popping back showing my face.
Good luck everybody.
Oh and good luck in 2016. :)

PS2's success can be argued either way, whether it be the game development decisions or the marketing related decisions. I think there are a lot of reasons it wasn't as successful as it could have been. I don't think it would have been any more successful had it been a clone of the PS1 feature set.
My decisions are mostly personal to slim the site down. Though a big part of it is most of the folks I built relationships with at SOE are now gone for one reason or another. And I think the day of classic fan sites are past. It's nearly impossible to compete with all of the instant gratification available out there (reddit, twitter, etc). The things that made us strong are essentially available to anyone with an internet connection now.

I'm not sure it's fair to say PS2 has hit bad times. It's hit a point when populations are declining but my sense is not that badly and not more than PS1 did at the same stage (if you bear in mind that only a proportion of PS2 base are paying customers while all were in PS1).
I think from comments on reddit that PS2 has been a disappointment to SOE/DBG but then so was PS1.
It was a disappointment to me, even though I played enough to get a BR100 and a bit more, it never had the magic of PS1 and I know that opinion is widely shared.
However many people do like it a lot so good luck to them.

It's sad to me because it could have been so much more. There was so much potential. I think it's far from a failure personally but man could it have been so much more.

TS3 and IRC have been shut down and the forums and front page have been slimmed down a bunch, I've also disabled advertisements. See you guys on Discord and occasionally here on the forums ;) We will continue to monitor the forums for reports as well as the contact e-mails and Twitter/Facebook when issues are experienced. There will also be a bit of downtime and maintenance over the next few days to further consolidate services.

Thanks for everything Hamma and Jenny.
The VS dogtag Jenny sent me after a stream giveaway about 3 years ago is still in my possession :) Thanks for that, I was always impressed that she actually sent it considering I was a third of the way around the earth.
Thanks for your awesome contribution to the PS community through these many years. You will always be my benchmark for fan run community sites.

Game is great but two continents should be unlocked at time instead of just one. This would allow for more players to be on at a time.
