This has been discussed. (http://www.planetside-universe.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5133&highlight=lidless). I thought it was the eye of Sauron.

negative, it's fairly recent. the explosions are supposed to be fairly low-key to reduce lag. ever play command and conquer renegade, especially during a flametank/mamoth tank rush? there is soo much screen-lag because of all the purty explosions and fire effects that you cant aim, so you just hold down the trigger and hope you hit an enemy.

but what about those who have 2gigs with gf4s? ;)

gf4's suck first of all... and 2nd, if u had a radeon 9700 pro, you'd rather have a really high res to show off the graphics then see low res, large explosions, and a ton of lag. Maybe if everyone had a t1 connection without sharing with any other comps there would be huge fucking awesome explosions.

The quality of an explosion's effect doesn't cause 'lag' in the sense that everyone having a T1 would alleviate the situation. The problem is your video card rendering them in a multiplayer environment. In a single player game developers can design maps and place enemies in such a way as to control the rough number of high-quality effects that are likely to go off at once. In a multiplayer game this control does not exist--this problem is especially pronounced in planetside, where there may often be dozens upon dozens of explosions all happening at once. If every one of these looked like it came out of Hegemonia, your video card would likely be shedding tiny electronic tears as it tried to push a frame out the door every few seconds.

That said, I think they can do better than the explosions they have presently or at least include an option to turn them up once the technology grows into it. Of course, explosions in MMOGs will always appear inferior to single player games out then because of the reasons I have stated--at least until some sort of holodeck-type upper limit of graphics is reached some time in 2080.

I might be easy to please, but just the sole fact that the explosions are not just 2D pixels like oh-so-many other games (e.g. HL) makes me wet my pants in antici... pation.

 Open Beta / two weeks
