look at the moon, first of all, the moon seems bigger than the planet, cos Aurix aint that big and the moon sure looks huge.

also, the why the hell is there clouds behind the moon? its not posible not at all, maybe the orange cloud is a Super Nova (elploded star) or a Nebular (Forming star) or an araura (some wierd light stuff) but i dont think so, cos it looks more like cloud to me. gee this sure is a wierd planet, and it has 2 huge moons on a tiny planet, wow.

Secondly, moons can appear this large anytime, and such a thing is definitely not unbelievable. It's a simple thing called distance. *shakes head*

BeerJedi
2003-04-08, 04:50 PM
Well, I think most have it right that this is a game.

But to seriously approach the subject, refracting light can make the moons appear much larger than they are. For example, anyone ever see the moon (of earth) when its near the horizon?

The light refraction creates an optical illusion (for lack of a better term) that makes the moon appear larger closer to the horizon then at its zenith.

Unfortunately, I can't see the image being posted about cause i'm getting a little red x.

Where did you do space studies? Cause I'm pretty sure I got more accurate information on interstellar phenomena on Romper Room.

look at the moon, first of all, the moon seems bigger than the planet, cos Aurix aint that big and the moon sure looks huge.

Does this mean that if I look up at the night sky, and see a small orangish speck that is Jupiter, that Jupiter is a smaller planet than the Earth is? No? Think how this may relate to your comments.

Further, how do you know how large Auraxis is? Have there been published scientific reports on its size and mass? No? Imagine that.

also, the why the hell is there clouds behind the moon?

With the proper alignment of moon phase, distance from ambient light, and weather patterns, you can easily obtain the optical illusion that the real life moon orbiting the planet earth is surrounded by and backdropped by clouds.

its not posible not at all,

Actually, it is. A cloud is atmospheric dust with condensed water vapor. In outer space, it would be ice, but it would still be a cloud.

maybe the orange cloud is a Super Nova (elploded star)

1) EXPLODED.
2) A super nova, being an explosion, is not an enduring phenoma. The force of the explosion drives matter away from the source at great speed, and would contraindicate a cloud formation.
3) Part of the process of a star going nova involves most of the gasseous and light element particles being consumed and turned into heavy elements by runaway fusion, they would be unlikely to form a cloud.
4) If a super nova detonated close enough to the star system where auraxis is located to where the entire visible skyline was taken up by the event, it would mean that the exploding star was very, very close..and all life would have been expunged from the planet in an enourmous blast of super concentrated radiation.

or a Nebular (Forming star)

A NEBULA is a collection of dust in outer space. It is not a forming star.

or an araura (some wierd light stuff)

It is good that you did space studies, and can come back to us with such scientific gems as "wierd light stuff". An Aurora (I'm going to assume you are speaking of something similar to the aurora borealis here on earth, but honestly, I don't think even God knows what you really mean) is an energy phenomena which is the result of charged particles being generated by the sun, as well as stellar dust being drawn by the earth's magnetic field, and reacting with molecules which compose our upper atmosphere. Not to harp on your lack of knowledge of anything relating to the game universe, but if the moons of auraxis have magnetic fields and atmospheres, there is no reason why they cannot have auroras that are visible from Auraxis.

gee this sure is a wierd planet, and it has 2 huge moons on a tiny planet, wow.

Please cite your source of information which tells you the size of the planet, or the size of its moons, or the distance that the moons orbit from the planet. Lacking even ONE of those pieces of information, you cannot possibly make even a vague guess about whether the planet is "wierd" or not.

Oh, and lastly...IT IS A GAME. IT ISN'T REAL.

matus or whatever, i see what you are saying and u obviously misunderstood me, when i mean super nova, i mean like light years away, but u can still se it, and a nebular is a forming star, lots of dust particles gather together and the gravitational pull slowly comes together and over thousends of years, a solar system is formed, so that cpould have also been seen on the other side of the moon (thousends of light years away)

i did space studies as a unit for geology just about a month ago (im in high school)

u guys are saying its just a game, well if it can me so unrealistic, why dodnt they just make everything all wiers like, and everyone can fly and all that stuff?

Also, think about how small the planet is, it like a 50th the size of mercury, and for a small planet to have 2 big (or close if u wanna put it like that, small planets cant have big/ close moons) moons would for the equater to expand due to the gravitaional pull of the 2 moons, then after all that the crust will reak and the planet will implode. I know this, Aruxis is a terestrial (rock) planet, and the crust will break under that much pressure, infact Saturn (gas planet) is also swelling at the equater due to all its rings, but its made of gas so it cant implode.

I sound liks such a nerd right now, but after lerning all this stuff about space, i can see how faulse Arauxis actuly is, but no matter, its just a game after all. seeya

and where did my pic of the moon go btw?

McBearclaw
2003-04-09, 05:54 AM
Okay, so this is another mini-astronomy lesson, so don't read it if you're uninterested.

First of all, "nebular" is an adjective. It cannot "be" anything. But assuming that you're actually talking about a nebula, they still aren't forming stars. Most nebulae actually just sit around looking pretty - only the densest of the already-dense dark nebulae (areas known as Bok globules) can begin to form stars. And as soon as the formation of a star begins, it's not a nebula anymore; it's a protostar.

Secondly, when stars do go supernova, they don't look like clouds. They look like this: http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/1997/03/
...similar to that one screenshot of "Sauron's Eye" as someone put it.

And... I just skimmed through some screenshots, and I never once saw clouds behind the moon. There's always a convenient gap in the clouds for the moon to shine through, but it's overlapped a couple of times. And a bright moon can shine through thin clouds, too. So unless you can actually get your picture to work, I'm considering it a moot point.

And finally, the planet is small for an unscientific reason: if it were full-sized, it would take a huge amount of computing resources to keep track of it all, and the battle would be too spread out to be very intense. The size of the planet is optimized for the number of players they expect, not to imitate physics.

There is an explanation for that... Perhaps Auraxis' sattelites are just much closer to auraxis then Earth's moon is to it. The Earth's moon was even closer than Auraxis's about 4 billion years ago, but it's orbit is slowly deteriorating, give it another couple of billion years and we probably won't even have a moon anymore as it would have exited Earth's grav well.

If you want to be scientific, the planet could be the size of a marble yet still have enough mass to have much larger, but less-dense moons orbiting it. You'd just need some never-heard-of really dense material. :-)

[edited in a sec later]

Take our moon for example. It's approx 1/3rd the earth's size, iirc, but its mass is only 1/6th of the earth's. It has a much lower density.

The material a nuetron star is composed of is possibly denser than that since the entire thing is made completely out of the nuclei of atoms.

I find it best in general that if you don't really know what you are talking about, to not say anything at all. Flaunting ignorance is not a trait to be admired.

when i mean super nova, i mean like light years away, but u can still se it

Light years, more than one. Did you happen to catch in your space studies just how large a light year is? A little under 6 TRILLION miles. In order for the explosion to have horizon-to-horizon visibility on a planetary body, the event would need to take place substantially closer than multiple light years. Hell, it might even need to be in the same solar system...and again, the radiation from the event would kill every living thing. The blast wave of emerging particles would probably be enough to sunder large portions of the planet's crust and cause it to collapse.

Also, think about how small the planet is, it like a 50th the size of mercury

Mercury has a diameter of 4220 kilometers. That would make Auraxis 84.4 kilometers across, or about 55 miles. In order for a "planetary" body of that size to have enough gravity to maintain an atmosphere, the entire inner core would need to be composed of irridium or some other super-dense rare earth element. This is unlikely to the point of absurdity...and is directly contradicted by the game itself. No planetary body of that size could have as many different climates as Auruxis does. Most of the surface area is covered in water. It is seismicly active.

infact Saturn (gas planet) is also swelling at the equater due to all its rings

The earth bulges in the middle. It is not spherical. Lots of reasons for it, the fact that it spins and gravitational influence from the moon being the two largest. Saturn, while composed largely of gas, has long been known to have a solid planetary body underneath. It weighs too much to be made entirely of gas. Yes, the rings around the planet pull on the atmosphere and cause it to bulge. The effect is identical to how our moon generates oceanic tides. How this relates to Auraxis, I have no idea.

There are all kinds of plausible reasons why the apparent game world is smaller than it should be. Perhaps the 10 island continents are the only land masses that are available. Xenobiologists have long theorized that the Earth is very dry for a water planet (and we have 70% ocean coverage), perhaps Auraxis fits more into the general mold. If the area where the continents are located is the only spot where lava pushes to the surface, it would explain why land only exists in those locations. It also accounts for the fact that the warp gate system doesn't loop around to the opposite side like you might expect it to, if the maps we've seen in screenshots represented the entire planetary surface. It could be that the water areas of the map are artificially reduced for the sake of fitting the map into a visible area. The continents might be seperated by hundreds (or thousands) of miles, but that empty ocean area is not shown for the sake of simplicity.

You simply don't know, and in the absence of knowing, making wild proclamations about how unrealistic the world is delves into whole new realms of sillyness.

Okay, please excuse this rant, but these kinds of posts really piss me off. "You're stupid, now nobody else reply so I can get the last word." Um, no.
Everything we said was true, yes, but it was not what you said reworded. It was what you said, except correct. Don't try to say, "Oh, geology is my favorite subject so I must know what I'm talking about." That is utter bullshit.
Perhaps you could link me to the picture you were actually referring to? See, your original picture was broken, so I had to go look for myself. I didn't see any magical subatmospheric moons, though.

And finally, the part that really got my goat. "You yanks"? First of all, you have no clue what my nationality is. I could be English, for all you know; I certainly seem to know the language better.
