Well, I usually get suckered in by these "exclusive" subscriptions to different sites, and Gamespot gives you the most bang for your buck.

However, I certainly wouldn't pay $5 for an open beta account. If they were giving away exclusive beta accounts, so you could begin playing right away, I might consider it.

There can be an unspoken understanding only when there is a strong set of shared assumptions--in this case, about SOE's priorities. You know what? If it was "Sign up for a year and pay us $24 and you get a guarenteed spot in open Beta" I'd do it, I'd know it was a dumb investment, but I'd do it anyway. But no, it's "Sign up and be one of the first 500 to sign up for the contest". Screw that. I'm not paying money to be able to rush to a site in the hopes that I can type faster then a bunch of other people :p

Yeah, I think they are right on schedule for a May 19th release, maybe earlier. I doubt open beta will last very long, it seems like they are doing quite a bit of work in exclusive.

well, i can imagine this open beta will be primarily focused on server strength in mass numbers. it looks like all the nooks and crannies have been checked up on during exclusive beta so open will test the boundaries of the servers themselves.
