View Full Version : Will Planetside live up to all this hype? What if it sucks?

What if planetside isint fun? What if all the fighting takes place on one continent. *cough* beta tester told me that was happening *cough*. Wouldn't it gor boring fighting for the same base over and over. And if you think about it, some continents will be hard to fight on. The one that is full of moutnains will probably get very little action. There is also one continent that is made up of islands. The Vanu should pwn this continent due to their ability to cross the water gaps between the islands. After thinking about all this, I am very concerned about how fun Planetside will be. Please prove me wrong!

Being a Beta tester doesn't free you from the burdens of stupidity.

Wouldn't it gor boring fighting for the same base over and over.

Not really. It's the action that would make it entertaining. If the environment is good, it'll allow for an innumerable number of ways the fight can progress, making it new each time, despite having played there before. It's like Dust in Counter-strike.

The Vanu should pwn this continent due to their ability to cross the water gaps between the islands.

They'll have an advantage in certain situations, sure, but they won't "pwn" a damn thing outside VR if they can't fight better than the other guys, which is what it comes down to in the end.

Please prove me wrong!

Try and find a Beta tester who is displeased with PlanetSide.

<--- Beta Tester

VERY pleased. Wait until you get into your first LARGE battle, you wont care wear you are fighting. Tracer rounds flying everywhere, rocket smoke trails hanging in the air, tanks blasting away at eachother, air vehicles buzzing overhead.

You wont be disappointed.

Fighting in the same place is boring and no one will do it?

CTF-Facing worlds

de_dust

Emain

Katabatic

You're right, no one is going to want to do that.:)

But on a different note, theres goign to be so many people playing that I INCREDIBLY doubt most action will be on one specific island. Maybye the sunny island where it never rains and theres not a cloud in the sky will be popular... but I'll be rockin the snow base while you get a tan:) And i know others will too.

yea, Lord only knows how generations of Previous FPS survived..

its called a Challenge!!! Thats one of the fun parts about games!!!
(well unless you are the smacktard type that relies on GameSharks and cheat codes)

My only concern would be not enough people playing the game (its hard to get people to commit to the monthly fee since most FPS fans have never had to pay one)

If everyone is off fighting on the same continent then why not go to other "empty" continents and start capturing bases and gaining control for your empire? Isn't that the idea?

So, can a beta tester tell me, how well is the fighting spread out? I want another opinion.

OneManArmy

well, I can tell you that the (NDA) is (NDA) in some areas and especially around (NDA). Not to mention (NDA) with the other (NDA).

hope that helped ya. :)

Some will quit before the free month is up, and unfortunately some of those will be very vocal about it, but every MMOG goes through it.

If everyone is off on one continent fighting you can bet I'll be off capturing bases on another one and I'm sure that will draw some attention. ;)

From what I can tell at the moment on BETA they have to test different aspects of the game, therefore there will be times where fighting is contained to one area, so the developers can watch to see if there are any bugs and to get ideas on balancing the empires.

Also there are fewer Beta testers than there will be 'normal' people ;) in the final game, which will mean when everyone starts playing there will be fighting all over the world

imho of course :)

There will always be the dissatisfied vocal people, no matter how good a game is. There are people who think Half Life was a shitty game. Name any stupid position, and there is someone out there who will support it at the top of their lungs.

There is no guarantee that you (the hypothetical you) will like Planetside. I think I will, but I don't know for certain. There might be some major thing I hate, or a collection of small ones that add up to throwing the CD on the junk heap.

Lots of games have had huge amounts of hype leading up to them. Some lived up to it, *most* don't (Daikatana anyone?). If you really want to be careful on the issue, play a character on a friend's account for a while to see what you think. In the final equation, you are the only one who knows whether a game is fun for you or not. No amount of positive reviews, or hype can change that.

That's odd. I can only imagine what the hell he thought PS was going to be like when he signed up for Beta. Nobody who actually started playing PS knowing that PS was an MMOFPS and not an MMORPG or some such has been disappointed with PS yet. There's obviously room for improvement, though, but I am sure that virtually everyone who didn't have unrealistic expectations is happy with it.

MATUSE are there REALLY people who think that halflife sucked!? OMG CANT B SERIOS!? It sounds like u think ppl who think HL sucked has problems.
I dont think HL sucked, I give it a 75%, theres so many other games that had a better soul. Deus Ex was one game that was amazing, not many ppl played it, but the most who did said that they had more fun playing that than HL, I cant blame them really.
HL was "just" another shoot-at-everythin-that-moves game, with a bit of exitement.

Daikata got delayed so much that it lost fans, the graphic sucked and thats y it never lived up 2 the hype.

All the fighting on one continent in beta.. maybe that's because it isn't open beta yet, there aren't a whole lot of players. :-)

"Wouldn't it gor boring fighting for the same base over and over."

If so, why the hell am I still playing on the same maps in Quake 2 Weapons Factory after 7 years. ;-)

First off, the server is not at full population. So you are bound to have the battles confined to certain continents.

Im sure there will be people who wont like it. But imo the game just owns ;)

Yes, PS will most likly be awsome. My problem is wondering how awsome it will be.

I am having a hard time deciding whether Id rather play AC2 or this. I have a few friends who already play AC2 who are always telling me how good it is... Ill probably try both, but no way am I paying for 2 acounts at the same time.

I think that a lot of strategic minded people/commanders will make sure that the battles won't get remotely similar and that no continent stands free for takeover or free of attackers!
Sure the VS can cross water with their hover abilities, but water has always, and will always, be a huge strategic factor, hover or no hover!...
If they cross the water they have another weakness elsewhere... find it and use it!

Similar to what someone has already said, there is no game that pleases everyone. Undoubtedly there will be people that say the game stinks .. but if you've been following the game I think you'll be happy with the outcome. Of course, no actual game will fully live up to the idealized version in your imagination that you probably have if you've been anticipating it for a while. But I suspect Planetside comes really close.:D

If the game sucks, we won't play. That said, every single thing I have heard coming out of the beta--from testers, from the press--seems to indicate that the game will rock. I wouldn't draw any conclusions about how many continents the fighting takes place on until stress testing, anyway.

hehe

this sort of topic was on my outfits boards as well as a poll.

The most popular answer was something like "go nuts killing everyone within 30 feet of you" I put that :p :D

I've heard that AC2 is complete and total crap. I've heard it's exactly the same as the other shitty repetitive, skilless MMORPGS, except they completely carebared it and made it even worse. Havn't played it tho. I liked the first one.

Daikata got delayed so much that it lost fans, the graphic sucked and thats y it never lived up 2 the hype.

Daikatana sucked because: The story was incomplete and lame, the graphics were marginal, game flow was horrendous, NPC (ally and enemy) AI was horrible to the point where beating your head into the wall was less frustrating, it crashed a lot, and wasn't very fun.

That's why it didn't live up to the hype.
