View Full Version : Are the MAXes too specialized?

Ok, I completely understand the need for an anti-infantry MAX, and an anti-vehical MAX, but why two anti-vehical MAXs (one "anti-vehical" and the other "anti-aircraft"). Won't the anti-aircraft MAX be useful for only 15% of the time? Or are there enough aircraft constantly zooming by to keep them busy.

A psu poll ab out a month ago or so, (maybe longer) said that 70% of everyone here is planning on being a pilot. I'd expect a shit load of air.

ya theres always a plane to shot at and planes go for the biggest target.

Yup, plenty of air units buzzing around. Not to mention that you would get a load of BEP for bringing down a Galaxy. :D

I know I am going to spend most of my time on the ground. I am more of a ground soldier then air.

I'm with Prowler, nothing wrong with being a good old grunt on the ground. Sure, I'll try flying from time to time but as far as I know, you can't hack and take over a base from the comfy seat of a Reaver.

lol I hope people aren't obsessed with air like they are in BF1942. I sunk a carrier with my sub ontime and 14 people came out...

Unfortunately Bighoss it's kind of lookin like that. I kno that a lot of people are planning to be pilots. And probably 90% of them are going to suck at it. Which means long waits at plane spawn sites. Now if flying turns out to suck then that might change. I plan on being a grunt myself and even if i wanted to fly i cant. No joystick.

Being able to move, basically unrestricted, in three dimensions is an attractive ability in a genre that traditionally holds people to the ground. Flying in an FPS gives you a sense of power over the players on the ground, since you can do something impressive that they really can't.

Personally I think the number of loner pilots will be high early, but will settle down to a number consistent with balancing after the novelty wears off and their real usefulness sinks in. The AA max and other anti-air weapons are the best defense against a game filled with flyboys who think they are the best thing to happen to Auraxis since spawn tubes.

Are you going to need a joystick to fly? I thought i read on the PS website that the flying would be similar to the way tribes handled it.

Anyway, yeah there will be plenty of pilots. However, when they realize that they suck at it and get owned by AA MAXes they'll have a change of heart. I know when i start playin i'm gonna be an AA max and i'll get experience points pretty quick.

Most people think they are not specialized enough, with only 3 points you can cert in anti-air, vehicle, and infantry.

So you're saying you can quickly switch from one suit type to another, or have all three weapon types available at once?

No, I did not say that anywhere in my post. With just 4 cert points(1 to be able to use MAX) you can be the ultimate infantry. You have to choose the armor type though, and you cannot switch. But for just 3 certs that is alot of firepower.

I don't know about switching between the suits, but if you can do that, you can only do it at equipment terminals. And you definitely cannot have all three weapons simultaneously.

As far as having all three, it'll take some work. It only takes three -certifications- to get AI, AV and AA, but it will take more than three certification -points-. I don't know how many, since I'm not in the game yet. But some.

Also, if the flying is like tribes2 people will find out fast that they suck or that their computer is too slow to fly a plane(like WW2O).

I havn't played so I can't say how true this is but you should all remember that just because it specializes in one thing dosn't mean its usless against everything else. So a AA MAX will be the best suited to taking down the aircraft but by the same token he should be able to defend himself fairly well against infantry and ground vehicles.

Actually, from what I hear and what the devs have said: the respawner for any vehicle (land or air) is based on a timer for YOURSELF ONLY. You go to a vehicle terminal and a vehicle pops out. Sweetz0r! Now don't get all blowed up because it will be another 30 minutes before you can spawn that vehicle again.

Just to clairify, the 30 minutes was pulled out of my ass. I have no clue the actual time it takes. :p

I highly doubt it's anywhere near 30 minutes. That would suck, unless it is really hard to bring down a vehicle. I'd say it's probably 10 minutes at the most. Probably less than that.

do you only need 1 cert for all of the maxes? like is it a cert for max, or is it a different one for each type?

1 cert for each MAX.

are we not all pulling stats and rules out our bums here lol beta people could tell us but cant. who knows what the cert system will turn out like there was a cert calculator but thats not gospel so lets not try and preempt the game. sony will make mistakes thats what betas 4 ;) also the beauty is it can respond quickly to trends and exploits. at least they did with everquest. seeing someone sit on top of walls in freeport and zap guards where the guards could not reach was weird. but fixed very quickkly and whilst bug was being fixed a gm sat there ;) watching so max's 3 types who knows i think a natural balance will occur initially a lot of people will go in tanks and planes but will soon realise that a mixed force (as in reality) is better. you cannot capture facilitys with airpower alone on drive a prowler into a command room ;) so me playing my medic(im a crap shot by the way ) will have plenty to do and fun doing it.
