View Full Version : Invisible Snipers Are Impossible... or are they?

One thing I love about T2 was taking people out at a range while invisible. I heard that you can't do that in this game (Thanks you SOE!!) but I think there might be a way. The AMS cloaks everything in a radius, what keeps someone from being specced to drive an AMS, and shoot a bolt driver? You could get an ams, drive it to the hill you want to snipe from, set the AMS so only people in your squad can use it (but since you are alone, that would just be you) and snipe away. You wouldn't even have to go anywhere to get more ammo. You would still get uncovered eventually, because of darklight vision, but it would take a far sight longer then just sitting there with your face hanging out. Anyways, just something I came up with during Chemistry. What do you guys think?

You can't see players that are outside of the AMS cloak field while inside of it so if your doing what I think your doing your going to have to exit the field, search for a target, take the shot, then run back inside. I really don't think your going to last very long doing this cuase as soon as you hit something I'm pretty sure every counter-sniper in the area your attacking will be scanning the horizon for your ass.

Blast it all!! Another exploit foiled by good planning and common sense by SOE!! You will rue the day!! :)

Wait thats gay, your empire cant shoot outa the bubble but the enemy can....?

But hey.......set your ams behind the hill so far that the bubble just gets to the tip of the hill, thn stay in the bubble and shoot......its like...smart...till sum dumbass on ur team sees this unmane ams and drives it away.....

lol.. wouldn't you also be able to see the AMS? even if it was behind the hill it wouldn't be very difficult to spot from the air.

Uh... lemme reiterate what was said so all is clear:

The AMS cloaks everything within "X" amount of yards.
(X being unknown number)
Players outside cannot see vehicles/players inside the field.
Players inside cannot see vehicles/players outside the field.
Any player can shoot through the invisibility field or pass through it normally.

Or so I'm told...

Interesting, because invisible snipers is one of the few things I hated about T2 with a passion :p Although if memory serves you couldn't do that unless you were playing a mod ;)

Thats why I stuck to normal tribes my friend, no sniping while invisible in normal tribes. :)

Wait in T2 you have backpacks for different things, and youn eed the enrgy one to fire the sniper rifle, so you cant have the cloaking backpack, so how did you snipe people with cloaking??

Well, in certain MODs they have sniper rifles that fire invisible projectiles and can be fired with any pack which really makes getting a vehicle (at an outdoor vehicle station) or doing anything that requires you to remain stationary while outdoors for even a second a real pain. :ugh:

One thing I loved about the Tribes sniper rifles was that they gave away the position of the sniper when firing. As far as I'm concerned, for a big outdoor game like Tribes, the rifle making it obvious where the shot was fired from is absolutely necessary. Without the sniper being given away when firing, it's virtually impossible to make it balanced, because it'd be too hard to find a sniper, and that would make him/her overpowered.

Yes he is, but dont worry after awhile hamma gets mad at trolls.

The cloaking field working both ways was correct, and you cant set an AMS to spawn only your squad. You can set it that only your squad or yourself can drive it or use the trunk (not trunk on an AMS, its a portable equipment terminal, defeats the point of a trunk). Its pointless to have a spawn point for only 10 people when attacks that depend on AMS support could have upwards of 50 people, so a squad only option wouldnt be included.

Well, what shows up where you are with the bolt driver is the huge muzzle flash and the little "You have been damaged from X direction" indicator. Unless the sniper OSK's ya, you'll be able to know which direction the bullet came from, at least.

Could you just have your head outside of the field and the rest of your body inside? I know it give away your head, but who needs a head anyways?:D

Does this count the AMS itself? A screenshot I've seen (can't find it right now) of a MAX shooting at an AMS, the AMS certainly wasn't cloaked, and the MAX was still a little ways outside the cloaking field. I'm pretty sure I've heard the AMS cloaks... but that screenshot confused me.

I'm confused now too.

Say I'm just running along, not doing anything just out in some field nothing in sight, when all of a sudden I hit my face on an AMS! WTF? Oh, damn I hate it when I run through those cloaking fields into the hidden AMS...

The cloaking object in many games are visable....so I'm guessin this is visable.....

hehheh, it be wierd. You spot a AMS, you start shooting it, enemy soldiers uncloak and fall to the ground one after another. That be wierd.....then suddenly the AMS explods, then you see bodys flying everywhere!:D

hehe actualy.. i loved the Renegades Mod for Tribes 2.. the snipers had becons they layed down that acted like a sencor jammer so the agrivating "arrow" over your head vanished. and the sniper riffle was a solit "bb".. that left something close to a faint con-trail. Now.. did this make snipers a pain to find, given that they didnt have a big red beam saying "here i am, shoot me!"?.. a little.. but then you have to rememeber that your own team has the same deal. Sniping is the #1 thing i do in T2 while im waiting for PS to come out. But a sniper withough that "shoot me" sign isnt as tough to find as you think once you get good at it =) Was in a game tonight and basicaly had a price on my head.. lol.. i was picking off the enimie snipers AND the people running around on the ground. And as for the sniping people at the vehical terminals.. most good Admins Kick/ban people for doing that nowadays. That or if their doing it in a game i am in, they only kill maybe 2 people befor i figure out were their at.... then they dont last mutch longer after that =)

I dont agree with makeing the snipers completely invisable in PS.. but since i dont know if players have "arrows" over their heads or not i cant say what i would like added to them. But going by the movies ive seen they dont so.. just leave the snipers as they are.

And BTW.. im NOT gonna be a sniper in PS... im looking forward to driving the Marauder and Prowler to mutch.. lol

I'm an anti sniper/combat sniper in tribes 2, meaning I hit and kill moving targets while moving with my sniper rifle in the middle of a battle(yes, I'm that good ;) ). I also pick off V pad snipers to spare my team mates the pain. :)

lol i hit moving targets also =P and flying ones and have done both while flying/moving myself.. and i think my record "distance" headshot... was something around 1100 something... =) guy had the flag so i could still see were he was.. but thats all i could see.. was the Flag icon. and its never "ontop" of the persone toating it at that distance.. hehe

lol, I just focus on the guy infront of me. :p

Edit: I'd have to say my finest moment was the time I got out of my shrike to get to an invo for repairs cuase I was messed up pretty bad back when I was getting it at the V pad when an enemy stole it. He came around to try to run me down when I pulled out my handy dandy laser rifle and sniped his ass straight out of the cockpit. Hows that for accurate? :D

i have done that to.. hehe... though with the mod i play. only the "deployable" shrikes and stuff allow you to be sniped out of. Guss the Mods decided that if you were gonna be cheap and take the easy way out by deploying your own plane withough a v-pad that they'd make you able to take damage withough first loseing the plane.

Well, this was in regular tribes, a vehicle's shields only protect you if you are on the same team as a vehicle, honest, go try to steal an enemy tank or mpb and you'll see what I'm talking about.

<--- Learned this the hard way. :ugh:

Yea, they should have several sets of favs, and this sight should have a chat channel so we don't have to spam up this poor guy's thread. :p So whats your tribes 2 screenname, maybe we can go kill us some assholes side by side. :D
