ummm... why are they giving away open beta acounts? i thought open beta was free for everyone?

Open beta is free, but ever-so-slightly exclusive. So sony is allowing certain organizations to give away accounts. Sony/ps gets pr, the sites get PR, and a few people get beta slots--everybody wins.
