It's with great pleasure that I announce that PlanetSide is in the home stretch for beta testing. A massive amount of beta discs are being sent today, and throughout the weekend. It has been a tremendous experience to get to this point, and although we've still got work ahead of us, we look forward to having so many of you in the game, playing alongside us as we work to make PlanetSide the first in its field.
I just wanted to take a moment, however, to address a few things.
What is the difference between Open Beta and Exclusive Beta? In Dave Georgesons Producers Letter, he mentions that over 12,000 people were accepted into the Exclusive Beta phase. This phase was conducted through email only over the past few months, and these beta testers downloaded in full the PlanetSide client. These individuals were provided instructions on how to download the game, and activate their beta subscription. In essence, this was a "disc-less" beta, and therefore, no beta discs were sent to these beta testers (such are the benefits of being the first on the block to play).
In contrast, some 25,000 people were accepted into our Open Beta. These emails were sent over the past several days, requesting shipping information from the beta tester. These folks will receive actual beta discs via first-class mail, along with instructions on how to proceed with playing the game. Over the next several days, these beta testers will begin joining our servers for the first time. (And note, if you received an Open Beta acceptance email and have NOT given us your shipping information yet, you must do this now or risk losing your Open Beta spot).
If you visit our beta website and find that you have access, but never received an email, we ask that you check your spam folder, especially on Hotmail and other anonymous email accounts. These anonymous email accounts implement anti-spam measures that sometimes block out legitimate emails.
We hope that beta testers will continue to visit these forums to discuss PlanetSide with the larger community. However, we do request that any feedback you have regarding the PlanetSide beta test be posted to the Beta Forums. Although the NDA has been lifted, this will still give us a central place to watch for feedback, technical issues and suggestions.
PlanetSide and the PlanetSide Hint Book are available for pre-order at the Station Store. If you want to be part of the action on day one, stop by and reserve your copy.
If you wish to discuss this post, it is cross-posted to the News Forum and is open for discussion there.
