ok, i've probably missed something, but what does the wee white scale line/ Triangle thing in the middle of the HUD when you're flying represent?

Yes, that would be altitude

Yes, confirmed , it is the height, measured in Meters , or Metres for you freaky brits, and if u hold ur mouse over it, it will tell ya how high u are exactly, above sea level, i.e. 23.5 meters, :)
