Well I just received an e-mail saying I was accepted in the SWG beta and if I want to participate I gotta give them $6 and they will give me a CD...
So I guess what I'm really saying is... anyone want in SWG beta? :P (yeah I probably can't do this)

LOL -- Charging for beta....YYYYAAAAAHHH. SOE is doing something right with Planetside, SWG is going horribly, horribly wrong it sounds like.

Would I pay for Planetside beta CDs? If the beta lasted at least a month then yes, I'd pay $6. For SWG? No chance.
Oh well, at least I have 2 beta sites to waste time in now. :D

I hope this doesn't break the NDA (lol).
It's actually like $12 (shipping + paying for the CD, not just paying for shipping).
It says it takes 4-6 weeks to deliver.
Poor SWG.

This sounds to me like they think SWG may fail and this is the only way to get some money back incase it does.

Sounds strange. A friend of mine from work got accepted to SWG beta the same day I got accepted to Planetside. He got his disks last Wednesday and has been playing ever since. As of tomorrow, I would be waiting two weeks for my disks :( ! I'll have to ask him if they charged him for them but I think he would have mentioned it if he had.

It's to cover shipping costs and CD creation costs.
Don't ask me why planetside isn't doing it. Maybe the dudes working on planetside got a bigger loan or something

You really think they are not making money off of this, if your answer is no then you are crazy.
Sony has doubts about SWG imo and so this is a way to make some money back before it may fail. They are not worried about PS thats why no one had to pay.

Of course they're making money off of this, but it's a VERY small margin, and every penny of it goes back into developing the game.

Okay. So, let's get your story straight. Sony Online Entertainment is extremely worried that a tried-and-tested formula based off of one of the biggest merchandising giants in the entire world will fail, while they have absolutely no doubts that a COMPELTELY new game style will never fail in a billion years.
Perhaps they feel that they wouldn't be able to get 45,000-60,000 betatesters in Planetside if they made them pay for it?

I paid the $6 for the SWG Beta back in October...so $6 for 8 months worth of game playing isn't a bad deal at all :D

SWG DEV team have been cutting cra left and right to make the game work. The game is coming together and it was not the game it was projected to be but they are way too far in now even if they wanted to back out.
A LOT of game have gone gold thought they would be hits and died extreamly quick.

I'm probably not supposed to say much since I think the NDA is still in affect, but a lot of your speculations about the game are pretty accurate (about it not living up to expectations), judging by what I read in the forums.

Uh
I'm pretty sure I remember them cutting crap because they wanted to hit the projected release date, and that it would be added in later on.

A lot of games didn't have the gigantic MMORPG company that is SoE backing it with the central theme based around a universe everyone loves.

Actually, since Open Beta has started, isn't the NDA off?

I don't know, but the SWG beta isn't very organized. I can't find any info on anything for it.
