They can support that many but not at the same time. That many on all at once would probly make the server explode in a ball of flame. =P

I saw that once before (a couple of weeks ago) when the server went down for patching and was not able to be brought back up (we were put on the staging server for the meanwhile).
It seemed like 10 different workstations for different devs rather than whole worlds that were meant for playing,
If it is the same thing I saw, then the servers had devs names on them and had a different server type than the three main ones.
(that same day I also saw a list of only two servers that had names that seem like everquest server names.)
I don't think we are getting 10 new servers.

look at EQ when they get 3000 or more on 1 server they cut the server in half so then it would be half of 3000 then 1500 more can join on both servers :)
its going to be about 2000-2500 ppl on a server maybe 3000 if they dont cut it half way

I'm willing to bet that you will be playing on 10 or so new servers. SOE will - as only logic would dictate - have enough servers to support over 100,000 people for retail release and it would not make sense to leave those server untested.
BTW, for those of you not so computer savvy. The servers that games like these run on are not your daddy's workstation. These are rack mount servers probably running several processors in each rack. Every couple of racks probably supporting one continent with a couple cabinets worth of racks making up the world server. Then those are linked to some massive ass storage servers with more hard drive space than you can even come up with a name for (Ok, they're called terabytes, 1 terabyte=1024 gigabytes).
If you have no idea what i'm talking about here are some pics:
Rack (http://www-132.ibm.com/content/home/store_IBMPublicUSA/en_US/eServer/pSeries/entry/640B80_7026B80D.html)
Cabinet (http://ssdweb01.storage.ibm.com/ibmsan/products/2032/prod_data/g225-6920.html) (just so you know, this is a more compact cabinet at only a little over 6ft high)
Edit:
Oh yes, and anything over 3000 users on one server would be friggin rediculous.

They've announced there are 60,000 beta keys floating around...
Realize for a second, there are 420,000 active everquest accounts. Everquest's record for number of users online at once is around 110,000. This is the _record_. So the most users was only a little over 1/4th of the total number of accounts.
Doubt more than 10-15,000 people are going to be online at once in beta. That'd be 3 servers. That's of course assuming they'd hit their record percentage they got with Everquest, as well as every single one of the 60,000 keys gets to somebody that creates an account. I doubt it.

I would not be surprised if PS has better numbers that EQ. EQ is definately not for most people. It's too long and boring for most people. PS on the otherhand is drawing from not only the MMO fans but every FPS fan and first person shooters have the largest single fan base in PC gaming.
Ok so 100,000 was exadgerating. But they most likely do have 10 more servers to test. 20 to 30 thousand is not an unreasonable number to assume for the release of a game like this.

... I was only talking about beta numbers.
Cyanide, EQ first started achieving these record numbers after they implemented the Bazaar, a zone in which idle PCs could convert themselves into merchant NPCs that sell to other pcs. There were hundreds upon hundreds (~580, last time I was there) of these idle characters on every server! And just because you thought EQ was long and boring doesn't necessarily mean its subscribers did and played less as a result. They thought it was fun, and they played for stretches of time that would make your average FPS player cringe.
For these reasons (no idle characters, average play period shorter), I'd expect the PS servers to average lower online percentages of their total accounts across the board. I'm also betting, for other reasons, PS will have a lower retention rate than MMORPGs. That's not to say it won't be profitable--it will.

Yeah I concur that the server would fireball with 60k or so on it. Just hope I can get on the same one as some of you guys from here. It'd be alot more fun than squading with random beta people that I haven't had the chance to converse with. :)

Lol, never gonna get 20-30 THOUSAND onto one game server. But just the same, they wont cap at 3000. Server will probally cap at around 5000.
