What kind of music is there going to be in the background. i mean i want to kill to a beat and playing my own music covers up the sounds of the game:(

i dont want to hear classical music on my killing spree, although medal of honor frontline did a go job with it .

i think there should be some thing from at least rock and trans to heavy medal, but some good trans in a game would be cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in T2, since the music was MP3 format, I ended up replacing everything they had with my own. It really does help alot to have your own tunes going when things start getting frantic.

It would be nice if we could do the same in PS by design.

That is like saying good graphic are not important to a game.

The better the graphics, the more you will enjoy playing the game. The better the music, the more you will enjoy playing the game.

good graphics AREN'T important to a game. thats why its called GAMEPLAY. not OOOOO LOOK AT THE PRETTY POLYS.

music adds NOTHING to a game except something you have to turn off if you want to be any good at it.

if you're listening to music instead of listening for footsteps, you're going to get owned every time.

I am going to have to agree with afex here. If you have music on, it can be difficult to hear quiet things in the game, such as a sniper shot in the distance, footsteps from a stealth, etc. However, I am going to have to disagree on the graphics issue, seeing as it is graphics that allows you to differentiate between everything you see, and increased graphics usually allows you to see farther in the distance, aiding scouting, sniping, etc.

Are you really trying to tell me graphic aren't important? If you to choose between two very similar games that got similar reviews and one had better graphics, which would you choose?

Eye candy definately adds to my enjoyment a game. In fact the only reason I might check out the game Eve is because it looks so beautiful. I think ear candy does the same. Don't you enjoy listening to music? Why wouldn't something you enjoy possibly add enjoyment to video games?

As far as requiring silence to be good at a game, I feel very differently. I play better when I am "in the groove."

I am sure that you have noticed days when you were either "on" or "off." Listening to the right music has the ability to put me in a state of mind where I do better. I find it helpful, you might not. I don't know about you, but I can still hear footsteps over the music.

I think the purpose of a game is to enjoy it and music helps me enjoy games.

You seem to equate enjoying a game to winning. Your argument, against music being important to a game, is that it detracts from your performance in that game. I am sure not everyone feels that enjoying a game equates to winning.

I'm gona play a sniper so I'm gona turn off music if there is any.

Music is not that important, but it helps to improves the feeling of the game.

Yeah Sound and graphics add to a game but it doesn't make the game. That's one of the reasons i've lost interest in FF series.

On the SNES the stories and characters were awesome.(Come on who will EVER forget Shadow or Cid or Kain or Kefka or Tellah "You spoony bard!!" ) It hit the PSX in 7 and became about graphics and sounds less about story and characters. I don't care what FF7 fans say i cared so little when what's her name died, i was like  but seeing Kain heartbroken on that mountain alone or Cid sacrificing himself to close the tunnel THAT was heartwarming. Now the only thing i keep seeing in the FF series is better FMVs and more flashy crap like that loser dude surfing some pipe. OOOOhhh wow he's so cool!!!

Misfits have always been one of my Favs.

Screaching Weasle is good I reccomend checking out "My Brain Hurts" if you haven't heard them. Let's see...then theres Union 13, The Smears, Bad Religion, English Dogs, Ramones, and Lagwagon to name a few. I love to pick up the Compalation albums because they always have them for like $3 at the record store, but then I tend to forget who the bands are that are on them.

But lately I have been lisening to Powerman 5000 a lot. Their first album was terrible, but the latest one "Tonight the Stars Revolt" kicks major ass. It's more New Age Speed metal like White/Rob Zombie, then it is punk, but what do you expect from Zombies little brother?

Doobz

Yea I have played these 3 and I must say, I would rather get a game with sweet graphics (like PS) instead of playing that. Sorry but I like to actually look at something when I'm playing a game. Oh and graphics are the most important to FPSes than any other genre because better graphics = better to see and it also = more advanced tactics and soooo much more! Don't tell me you would rather be playing PS as a 2d game with the graphics of a NES instead of the PS we have now!

Just my opinion, but good music can add alot to a game, just look at Halo or IWD2. granted it isn't really the same thing but good music can really immerse you in a game. Graphics... to me there just nice extras, if the game has them, great, if it doesn't owell. Excepting of course, games that try to scare you, i doubt anyone would be scared by the original RE these days (not the GC version, the original original.)

Uhh Afex, I care for the gameplay as a first priority but if you had an option between Game A and Game B and here where what each one had to offer:

Game A
-Awesome Gameplay
-Awesome Sound
-Awesome Graphics
Game B
-Awesome Gameplay
-No Sound
-No Graphics

Now if Game A was just as fun as Game B, which one would you rather be playing? If you say B, then I'll respect that but you don't have to say I'm the type of person that ruins games by making them pretty and not fun at all. Asheron's Call 2 has awesome graphics but I'm not so sure about the gameplay and that's why I don't play it. Gameplay is always first and it always has been on my list so don't try saying it's not cause I would know a whole lot better than you would!

In online games, there's less stress on the music part and more on the graphics part. It's not that graphics are more important than music - but many people can find ways to play their favorite music during a game while graphics are set in stone.

Plus, there are too many different types of music that people enjoy. It's all opinion. Graphics are generally universally rated as "good" or "bad." :D

BTW, classical music r0x0rs j00. :cool2:

Yea I meant that graphics are most important to FPSes compared to any other type of game! I didn't mean it was the most important part of the game, just that it's more important in that genre because it adds much more realism than a game where you are shooting at block characters.

Hi!
This should be my first post on PSU and im lousy at introducing myself so i'll just say what i wanna say.

Music should be an option and the coolest and most realistic way to have it that is using radiochannels (think GTA3).
Radio should also make it possible to have any kind of music style too, even news...

I dont know how to quote either so i'll write down here:

post by Jinxmasta
Game A
-Awesome Gameplay
-Awesome Sound
-Awesome Graphics
Game B
-Awesome Gameplay
-No Sound
-No Graphics

Thats one weird comparisation, of course (i guess) you would choose game A but thats notwhat the others been saying
(i think... hope im not screwing myself up)
If game A didnt have awesome gameplay it would make more sense.

Now im shaking apart from nervosity soo i'll better stop write now.

Cya and sorry for any spellong!

Too true on the glitz over content on the latest FF games :( I loved all the snes ones, I must have beaten Chrono Trigger a hundred times... but the ps games just seemed like so much filler to me.

I played FFX for all of a half hour, named the main character Tiffany, got bored and quit.

On the other hand, Xenogears had pretty subpar graphics, but its story and music were awe-inspiring. I cannot wait for the prequel. :D

Honestly, I am glad they are putting such effort into the graphics in PS. Seeing as how I am going to be flying over everything at a thousand feet, having ugly, bland terrain to look at would pretty much ruin the experience for me.

thing that made that game was definitely the plot - but the music in it made it legendary in my opinioin. I had a friend who thought the music was "okay" but was more immersed in the plot. I guess I focus on music perhaps a bit more than the average gamer. :D

if a squad or platoon or what ever is assulting a base and there being all cautious then eye of the tiger starts to play and you know that every persons rushing in from the lights to the medics and that would be sweet not that plus i dont know a single person who doesnt like that song.

IMO music can add a lot to a game but even in short games good songs can end up seemng very repititive. In a game that will played potentially hundreds of hours almost everybody would get sick of songs even if they were great and didn't interfere with hearing important battle sounds.

Though it would be kind of funny to give the factions musical distinctions, maybe like;

TR=Industrial
NC=Punk, Grunge
VS=Trance

with some weird ambient soundscapes for Vanu ruins.

Flashingfish
2002-12-20, 09:23 AM
Music can ONLY create an involving atmosphere in single player. This is because the game can start and stop different music at certain and appropriate times, to get you scared etc.

I remember in Resident Evil (3?) whenever this big evil guy came, some scary music was played just before. Then later on the music played again, you were all ready to fight him, and he didn't turn up =]

But in multiplayer games, this kind of co-ordination can't happen. It's not feasible. I prefer to turn off all music when I play, because in real life there is no music in a war  and like others have said, you can hear people's footsteps easier =]

There's also the fact that I'll be using a voice program in PS, so music might interfere with this.

Hamma
2002-12-20, 10:05 AM
I think there should be music in PS, but you should be able to disable it and/or replace the MP3's :p

DiosT
2002-12-20, 11:37 AM
I'm with Hamm & afex....

you NEED to hear those quiet sounds, back when i used to do LAN parties i'd OWN people playing music because they hear their Heavy metal, and dont hear my footsteps RUNNING up behind them, and shooting em through the back of the head with the rail gun...

In games like EQ/AO/DAoC it's fine, it keeps you more entertained from downtime.. but in a FPS... you hearing music = you not hearing the snipers last 3 failed sniper attacks

Delos
2002-12-20, 01:53 PM
I'm going to have to go with hamma and afex with this also. Your attention goes down when listining to music, and you miss things like footsteps. Although music does get you pumped up and might get you into the game more, it hinders your actual playing ability.

WhiteSun
2002-12-20, 02:07 PM
Yeah, put me in the hamma category.

I'd prefer to be able to place/replace mp3's in game directories AND have an in-game ability to kill the music at my discretion.

Sniping, on foot, etc... need silence. Driving a quad across a continent? Turn up the Chemlab.

cujoman39
2002-12-21, 02:36 AM
ya the people who play music when they play get slottered but thats only if they blast it and who says the music has to loud. it would be sweet if they had as many songs as GTA:vice city which is one if not the best game of all time!!!!!!!

then the music wouldnt be repeditive.

Most shooters don't have music in it. I think music would probably be added in shops or whatever areas where there'll be no fightingbut I haven't seen any FPS games with music while fighting. It would be distracting.
