:sniper: The sniper IMO needs some help. Trying to snipe in bright armored suits seems like it would be difficult.
On to the point... They say that they got rid of going prone because they thoguht it would slowdown game play...what if they only gave proning to snipers? It would help out the sore thumb in the grass without slowing down game play.
Just an idea.......

Crouch behind a rock, just as good as prone.

Good point, by the way the Bolt Driver design is killer. The first time I saw the reload my jaw dropped, thats how i do it, crack open the stock and drop in a 6 inch rod. Great design.

Well i don't think that there will be a rock conveniently near by every time a sniper goes to snipe. And soon people would know to just light up the surounding rocks when someone yells out sniper.

Oh and the Bolt Driver cant get one shot, one kill can it? I think head shots should be deadly to everything but MAXs

you don't even have to go behind a rock. if you are sniping where alot of fighting is going on, they most likely won't go looking for you. i've seen people on hills where they can be seen by anyone and they are killing people one by one. yes it isn't perfect but it works plenty.

Bring a portable rock

You can always mine the rocks around you so enemies can't sneak up on you.

Nope it cannot get one shot kills on any armor. Also this has been gone over before but getting shot in the foot hurts as much as getting shot in the face. Infil and Standard armors die after one shot from the Bolt Driver. Agile takes 2. Reinforced takes a few, and just dont try on a MAX.

Be nice if sniper cert let you do something 'interesting'. Like climb trees.

THAT would be an interesting cert for a patch/expansion - 'Grapple gear' - allows you to carry stuff that lets you scale walls/trees.

If it were up to me:
With the bolt driver, you get HORRIBLE penalties from moving. Your COF is basically your entire screen until you stop moving for half a second. When standing, your accuracy is pretty bad - about as big as a dime. When crouched, you have quite great accuracy. However, it isnt good enough to snipe targets more than about 100 m away. For that, you use alternate fire to hold your breath (Ala splinter cell) which gives you pixel-perfect aim, but only when crouched and not moving. 'Steadying' would drain your stamina rapidly - About 20 points per second.

I agree with Glue in my overall opinion but quite frankly no one will every change it and its NEVER gonna happen.

On another note.. the better snipers WILL be able to adapt to the circumstances and overcome. I like the grapler idea is a nice idea but again.. the devs think its TOO GOOD so its never gonna happen either IMO.

To be an effective sniper u have to be smart.. adapt overcome and destroy

Well, (I am a really good sniper in Army Ops...but I don't know if this is the same) you have to make it so your unnoticable. I know that sounds like everything people are saying here but you have to crouch or do anything to get a clear shot while staying invisible...a Sniper should be last in the field, but not a minute after combat starts...because if the sniper gets there first he will get the most attention.

Snipers really aren't that bad...they're becoming great assets in crazy firefights, where they can get kills with one shot (people being weakened and not scanning for snipers all the time). As long as they're on your squad, the sniper shares their BEP with you.

A good sniper will find decent cover, even in the open :)

Nope it cannot get one shot kills on any armor.

The bolt driver 1-shots infiltrators and standard armor.

Been playing with the bolt-driver alot in Beta...

1.) The bolt-driver can take down infiltrators in a single shot, not sure on standard (2 shots I think), reinforced and agile in two shots. All at max health. So at most 2 shots to drop anyone foolish enough not to seek cover.

2.) The range on the bolt driver is sick. I can accurately shoot to the limits of the clipping range (which is very, very, far away for the non-beta people. Tieom, if you are having difficulty shooting targets past 100m then you have lag issues. I've killed targets as they were fading out (targets that leave your clip range fade away). The range of this weapon is why it's so powerful.

3.) It is nearly impossible to shoot someone at range when standing. The cone of fire is huge. Likewise, the reticule ballons very rapidly when tracking targets so hitting a moving target is very, very difficult. Crouching and still is the only way to consistently and accurately use the bolt-driver.

4.) Nothing needs to be done to enhance a snipers hide-ability. The terrain is incredibly diverse and there are quite a few natural hides available for anyone to snipe from. I've explored several continents extensively and there are some areas that I actually think the devs designed for sniping. Use common sense. I'm not going to go into detail here, because I'm not going to give away my favorite spots for you damn Infiltrators and Reaver pilots. =P

5.) Reload time is long, 5 secs per shot, which is perfectly acceptable considering 2 shots is all you need to take down an infantryman.

6.) Unlike most rifles that come with AV and AI ammo. The bolt-driver only has one type. I've found that it does very small but noticeable damage to armor targets. I've killed previously damaged MAXs that didnt have the sense to find cover; took a long time and a lot of ammo too.

Snipers in PS need to be extremely patient and extremely observant. Infiltrators, Reavers, Mosquitos, and Pheonix's are your worst enemies. Those 4 certs can greatly impair your life expectancy if you arent careful. However, played smartly, a sniper can have great success. I've been most successful during large skirmishes. Find a place with a good view at the right distance and it's like shooting fish in a barrell.

You can get in trees.... hotdrop from a plane (mosquito best for this) on top of a tree and just stay there.

Upside.... no one is going to knife you (they cant get up there)

Downside.... you will most likely take damage jumping off if you want to run.

There are plenty of ways for snipers to make themselves less noticeable. Although I should know better than to start talking about them, many continents have trees which curve in a strange sort of fashion, the end result being that you can climb up them and conceal yourself within the trees foliage.

I think, right now, the biggest problem with snipers is that they're not typical for FPS games. They aren't the pin-point accuracy insta-death dealers of many other FPS games, and that's probably a bit of a shock to the people who're used to joining a game of Counter-strike and getting an AWP to own the map with (until they meet another AWP user, in which case some actual skill comes into play). Once people get used to the idea that snipers aren't the John Rambo's of PlanetSide, things will be much better, though.

This is true, but I want to add that everyone keeps assuming the target is at full health. I've died to snipers a few times in one hit while in Agile or Reinforced because I wasn't at full health and armor. There really is a good chance of snipers one-shotting many people during an actual battle, as people tend to not stay at full health for long.

Sniping in planetside requires a bit more strategy than sniping in most FPS's. Also, my primary job when sniping is actually scouting the area and using my 8x scope to pinpoint the enemy. Being in a squad makes me ten times as effective, if for no other reason than they provide a distraction.

I thinking sniping in PS is right where it needs to be as far as game balancing goes. Those who actually take the time to learn how sniping works in planetside will do well, those that come in with preconcieved notions of what they think sniping should be are not going to like it.

Best part of sniping?

Taking pot shots at an enemy TR Max who's on the roof of the base you're attacking (heading for the cap room too) from a tower and watching him dance around in confusion looking for the guy shooting him thereby distracing him ong enough for two guys from your squad to walk out with decimators, stop, laugh really hard over Teamsound, and turn him into a grease stain :D

I'd like to see some sort of camo suit for each type of environment. Basically futuristic guilly suits. Then you could buy individual certifications for the different suits.

Guilly suits would be too good.

I've been following teh game and at first I hated what they did to snipers..

No prone and headshots were gone aswell.. On top of that the armor sucked for hiding =/

But As I've followed the game I've come to like it more than hate it. Its weeds out the "weak" snipers from the "good" snipers. I HATE one shots anywhere (invites no skill newbs) but like the headshot in my experiences.

Yes u can 1 shot just revived because they still haven't been healed. (Or atleast thats what I last heard. I'm not in beta yet :( have to wait for discs:mad:)

I have 2 questions though if they coudl be answered..

1) How is teh bullet drop (if there is any)
2) How much woudl u say u have to lead or is it instant??
