View Full Version : Combat engineers out there, let me ask you something.

Are you developing any strats that seem to work for you? Do you have more than 3 equip favorites hot-keyed like me? What has been the most enjoyable part for you? Does your squad appreciate all you do? Do you find a use for alarm sensors? (I don't)
Don't give away your best secrets but some info won't hurt? :)

I haven't tried the engineer yet but i would imagine their roll will have increased importance with the new patch for the simple fact that boomers can quickly destroy terminals and such, thus making them great for draining base NTUs.

Motion sensors are good to put near your turrets, lets the turrets target infils :)

There are all sorts of strats I have already talked about in other posts. There are tons of different types of stratagies available for the intelligent combat engineer. Its possible to play both offensively and defensively amazingly well.
The most enjoyable part for me is getting tons and tons of kills and never dying... and making people feel insane hatred and rage trying to get rid of me.
My squads are always very pleased with my work as I am also an Adv Hacker. Infantry almost never make it through once my defense is in place and even MAX better be damn careful.
For a strategy which does include using one of those motion detectors think of placing it with a boomer. Specifically at the CC or somewhere very closed quarters. Someone trips the alarm, you set off the boomer. Not overly usefull but can be nice for holding a CC and patrolling outdoors when you have a smaller squad.

When i first started beta we were all at BR20. So i desided to get a stealth engineer/hacker. Basically this is what i would do, id carry a amp(no ammo) a rek, and 3 ACE. Id find a base, destroy some things with Boomers and resupply. The enemy would eventually start looking for me, so id plant a boomer around a corner, shoot at them and run past the bomb, and kill them when they ran over it. Lotsa fun.
Right now im just plain old eng. My squad loves me because alot of people play maxs, and the BANK holds tons of armor points. Then combining the self healing function and advanced regeneration, im really annoying to kill.

Great stuff, thanks.
I guess I am doing right by putting the sensors next to the turrets. I also certed in infil suit like some of you and the best feeling in the world is pulling up behind a squad's back line (usually softer targets) in the courtyard or just outiside the base and quickly pop 2 turrets down and watch the scatter, lol.

Turrets will lock onto infils by themeselves unless they crouch and sneak by, in which case the motion detector still wont pick them up. I find them a waste to use with the turrets as I am usually nearby enough to hear when they start firing anyways.
I also try and hide my turrets as much as possible and putting a motion detector beside one is like a big sign saying FIRE MISSLES HERE.
Spitfires are useless if visable from any kind of range. I always put them directly behind a tree or some other cover along well travelled areas so they only start shooting when someone unwittingly walks past that spot. Then they are taking it in the back from close range and have very little chance of surviving if they are not wearing at least Reinforced Armor.
Then for some extra fun leave a mine on the OTHER side of the tree. Anyone getting shot will instinctively run there for cover.
Boom.
Haha, Im deadly.

I gave up my combat engineer cert yesterday. I just felt that the time it takes to setup & sneak around to sabotage I could be doing much more for my squad repairing armor and fixing vehicles. I think the dev team needs to make a few more improvments to the class to make it more viable for me to play IMO.
I think mines and boomers should be able to be tossed rather than just placed. I don't mean give them the range of a grenade, but a 10ft slide across a floor would really be nice. I cant tell you how fustrating it is to sneak 90% of the way to the target only to get seen because you have to touch it to place your boom-boom. Or how sucky it is to watch a max walk under your bridge and not be able to drop a boomer or mine on his path. Give it a 5 to 10 second arming timer to balance it out.
Mines should be able to be placed inside or outside.
Lastly, they ought to let us put the detonators in a hotkey slot. If you set up boomers on multiple points of entry in an attempt to defend (most CC's have multiple entry points), the enemy is gone by the time you fiddle in your inventory, equip the correct detonator, activate it, and press boom. The fact that you can hotkey a health kit sitting in your inv and not a detonator is kinda silly IMO.

I'm not givin away my best secrets :) The best part about of being combat engineer is that it is the most tactical cert out there.
And you cant keep using the same tricks, because people start to catch on (sometimes).
On motion sensors though.... put one in the CC and near spots that stealthers like, so that people without darksight can track them down.
One thing i do suggest is that you spend some time watching how people attack and defend bases. Use your turrets, mines and sensors to act like a force multiplier.
Oh and don't put your turrets out in the open for 2 reasons....
1. They wont last 5 seconds when a force comes through...
2. Poorly placed turrets mess up my turret placement (if you a VS on Citrine) because you cant place another turret within a certain proximity.

I agree that hot key use would be nice for a lot of stuff, but I think the Combat Engineers can be mad powerful already if used correctly. If they could toss ACES they would be much too powerful a weapon. I would like to be able to use Mines indoors as well although I do understand that the close walled hallways would make them pretty unavoidable most of the time and so kind of extra powerful indoors.

If you could place prox mines indoors, the hallway to and inside the CC room would be carpeted with mines 24/7.

Wall to wall mining available.
50 BEP per Sq/Ft.

Mines can be destroyed by shooting them or by using jammer grenades. Also, you can reduce the max number available to be deployed at any one time to 5 or something like that. You cant carpet deploy them as they cant be put within close proximity of another deployable.
If you gave boomers and mines 10 second arm time and a 10 ft toss distance I dont see how that could be used as overpowering. I wouldnt want to see them used to insta-destroy a moving tank or vehicle but if you placed them carefully ahead of time they could be used very effectively.

Five is WAY to low for a maximum amount. 20 is almost too low for me...
=)
I dont like the 10 second timer because it would make it a lot, lot harder to take down MAXs and Vehicles when not using pre-planted boomers. And if you want to throw them you may as well carry grenades which are smaller then ACEs anyways.
