Basically what I'm asking is why do you think the game is named Planetside? What does the name mean to you? Why the hell does the name sound so damn cool? :p

Hmmm, battle takes place on a planet, there are 3 different sides living or adapting on one planet! Pick a side and free the planet of all nuisance, so we can live as one big happy family!!

yeah... a planet is spherical....
a side of a planet.. is the entire planet....
so planetside = 'The entire world'
game involves the 'entire world'...

which side? the inside? or the outside?
If both... it'd be Planetside2
right?
planetside is a term used to refer to the surface of a planet from outer space.
"once we get planetside, we can...blah blah blah"

The sole reason they named it Planetside is because a good portion of the people who are going to play think they're going to be sniperz.
How does that tie in? Well... Easy transition Sniperside.

Hopefully this game won't turn into CheaterSide like CheaterStrike did.

I've always felt that the name Planetside was derived from the word "Stateside" which refers to being in the United States. It's orogin comes from WWII when soldiers couldn't wait to get back home, or "Stateside". So in this case it's people wanting to get "Home" after traveling through space.
I have also heard the term "Planetside" used in Si-Fi before to describe getting off the ship, and out of space, as in "We're going Planetside for a little R&R".

... wtf was that? Soldiers don't want to go "planetside" for R&R in this sense. They want to go there to kill people! I for one wouldn't want to vacation in a war zone. :D

Well done repeating what afex said, too
Reminds me of the saying 'topside'. Like when you're in a submarine or underground... 'Let's go topside and look at the sun!'

Planetside is how a spacegoing culture describes living on or travelling to the surface of a planet. ("He lives planetside" or "She's headed planetside.") That's pretty much where the name came from.
That, plus Marketing thinks its easy-to-say and sellable. :D
But seriously...the sci-fi reason is what started it. It's interesting to me how many different impressions you all got on that one word. I read WAY too much sci-fi and didn't even think of the other explanations you gave. I *never* would have thought of Hamma's "Stateside" interpretation.
That being said, however...all the explanations are correct, as far as I'm concerned. It is, after all, just a name.
If names mattered, no one would have ever bought "Doom". I mean...what the heck? How does that relate to the game content? ;)
