I'm thinking of getting a tank cert, once I get to play. I'm currently thinking of joining VS, so that would mean that I'd be behind the wheel of a magrider.
1) How "good" are tanks when it comes to taking a beating?
I've read that it takes like 4-6 hits from a striker before a max croaks. How many hits does it take to take out a tank? (Would hate the feeling to be sitting in a "tin can".)
2) Do tanks have any (good) AA weaponry... or must one rely on someone else covering that department?

tanks are good in the game. but it also depends on who is driving it. one magrider took out 4 reavers last night before being killed by the 5th one.

I would think Strikers are near-equal to Pheonixs, and 2 Pheonixs takes out 600 armor. Takes 3 to kill a full health MAX.

I took out a Reaver with my AV NC MAX yesterday, I was stoked!
I think air is covered by air and MAX's better than tanks. Tanks are heavy ground assault vehicles. I freakin got owned by a sunderer and a vanguard. They rock at clearing out lots of troops fast, perhaps faster than a group of MAXs? But for the real tanks, you have to have a driver and a gunner. So before you get your cert, make sure you have a good buddy for a gunner... Driving around in a 2-man vehicle with only one guy sucks... And the 1-man tanks aren't as powerful of course.

I got that cert (i shouldnt have, i know now) and drove on in a mag with a buddy, while the rest of the squad left in a galaxy.
I learned a lot of things on my little spin in that mag...
First: Be sure to set your sensitivity so u can actually steer the damn thing...
Second: Use the roads. I was on some really hilly continent (cant remmber which) and i got stuck in the hills, not bieng able to get over them.
Third: This cannot be said to often... BEWARE OF THE TREES!!! :p
Fourth: U have a gun u can use as a driver, but i doesnt turn to the sides... u have to turn the entire tank to get it in position. Use it well when against infantery, but when up against tanks, dodge bullets instead of getting that gun into action. It aint gonna save the day.
Fifth: BEWARE OF THE TREES!
Sixth: Use that sidestep feature to dodge incoming enemy AV fire. U can see the bullets coming, so try and evade... That is properly the single biggest advantage u have, so use it well.
Now to get back to what happend with me and that mag, i drove around trying to get over hills, for like half an hour, untill i finally chrashed sideways into a tree with half my armor remaining (lost alot by driving into shit on the way) and blew up.
Bug? i mean, is it so that hitting a tree sideways blow u up?
I dunno, but dang that mag is hard to pilot :p .
On a little side note:
Today i flew thru an enemy MAX in a warp gate bubble while transporting my squad to the front line. Damn he was surpriced and damn it was funny :D
Like: Doodadoo... Wtf??? OMGTHATISAGALAXY!!! *BANG*
Ohh and later i was looking on the map, and got stuck on the warpgate pylons, so we all had to bail out, and walk across the continent :(
Lesson learned: Get a navigator :p

I experimented with AV weapons against MAX's, and they really didnt work well. I suggest using special assault or AP rifle bullets against maxes, and using AV missles or rockets against vehicles...
that is if you're a grunt.:)

Are thanks effective in PlanetSide? Yes and no. Tanks have the firepower and the armor to be very, very deadly in PlanetSide, however, the way MOST players have used them they make the tank ineffective. Generally speaking most players get a tank and drive straight into battle. They do not wait for sufficient air cover or infantry elements to go with them. This makes the tank the biggest, easiest-to-hit target on the map.
Now, if a tank crew is smart, and some are, they will move into battle with infantry and air support. This makes the tank ten times more combat effective. For one it give the enemy more targets, and two it givest the tank more eyes. Used effectively tanks will be the biggest weapons in PS. Used ineffectively they will be the biggest and fattest targets in PS.

Shrubberies are mean, one blew up my friends harraser. :O
And that vanguard is brutal!!! 3 of them are just plain, the fight is over (if all you have on your side is infantry).
A battle this weekend (i believe for gunuku) the NC whipped out 3 Vanguards and a few fast attack vehicles. The pretty much over ran out position and forced us way back.
the one beauty of AV is catching Tanks and heavy vehicles crossing bridges. They're almost always drivin' up the middle and wreckage sur make lovely road blocks.

Last night on Cyssor we had about 6 Vanguards up at once going from base to base along with 4 to 5 reavers and 3 or 4 Mesquitos plus 30 some grunts and a few snipers drving wraiths/buggies. It was insane. Then the continent crashed :p
After our sqaud managed to get back in we were in an awesome bridge battle with TR, they were actually using their Prowler for once /cheer. At one point they had 3 coming across at once. Of course once we destoyed the first one the other two were trapped on the bridge and they didn't last long either ;)
The After that we hopped down to Khaang killed some TR, capped the base, lost the base because I bought an ANT in the wrong armor and delayed the refill by 3 minutes (Shoulda guessed reinforced couldn't drive them), then refilled the base and capped it again. Good times :)

Yeah... those shrubberies must be made of cast iron or something. Ouch. I've hit those things so many time... You think you'll just cruise right on over it - but no.
