... a jack of all trades character in PS? At the higher levels can you have certifications in many many items? Is this even a good idea or would it be better to just specialize in one or two areas?

For my playstyle I feel that it would be better to be really good with a few things than kinda good with a lot of things.

Comments please.

not really.

with the current BR20 (from my understanding) and earning 1 point per rate, each vehicle and other variant costing from 2 - 4 points each, even if you're maxed at 20, you'll still have to choose a select few to keep and a few to let slide at any given time.

nice thing is, its not set in concrete. just unlearn and learn something new if it interests you..ditch it later if not.

so, short answer....no, you cant.
long answer..yeah sort of, but not everything at once.

My understanding is your character will max out at BR 20. This means you get a max of 23 cert points. Check out the cert calculator (link on home page).

This means you want really ever be a jack of all trades, but you could develop either a specialist character or a more rounded character.

Remember though you can have up to 4 characters and you can unlearn certs. So you will be able to fiddle around and find the right balance for yourself.

winja hit it on the head. I'm currently BR11 (one bub from 12) and i've recerted several times. I'm playin' TR and surprisingly don't like the minichain gun. i thought i'd like it, but not a fan. i've droppred and gained the cert a couple of times. i've also certed asa harrase/maurader/Galaxy driver depending on the nights needs.

tonite, i'm going to drop chaingun for prowler points.

I don't know if it was teh lag or what... but the Lasher kicked my ass when I played TR.

And why is it on EVERY server, I play the outnumbered empire it seems? Every battle I go to, we're the undergod! :P~

You can get every single weapon cert, and a few others, by br20. Kind of defeats the entire purpose of certs...

You can have every weapon cert, but many times combat engineering would have come in handy, or a galaxy cert, or a reaver cert or an advanced medical cert, or a sunderer cert etc.

and more on certs that relate to one another. Since Im allowed 4 chars per server I would rather have each character with certs that compliment each other rather than a char with all kinda different things.

Just been in a really foul mood as of late since they trashed my rifle.

Seriously though, one can pick up every single weapon cert with points left over. I would prefer it if the costs increased or scaled or something. I want to see real specialization :)

No kidding about the lack of specialization. Now, I play a specialized character--a heavy assault/av grunt in reinforced, and at br13 I already have enough points for a thresher. I was fighting for a tower, and I came upon a cloaker--who I killed twice before the tower was hacked. He showed up several more times that night as a MAX and a Reaver. Cloaker, max, reaver? That is some screwed up certing.

There used to be a pre-req for almost every cert

I think the Devs intentionally left some Certs low in value with no pre-req in order to test balnce issues and make it easier for people to get them and use them. Remeber it is Beta. I'll hold back any complaints until the game is out for real.

I am currently BR15. I have every single weapons cert except for heavy assault, Reinforced Armor, and Engineering. With one cert left over. I only have a total of six more certs until BR20. Not many choices with six certs. A vehicle for transportation would take around three certs, and I could either pick up medical, which many people think is useless on its own(Regeneration implant and medkits), or hacking, which could be helpful.

But in my opinion, I do not believe my character is all that spread out. For the most part, he is nothing but a grunt and that is all he ever will be.

I aslo agree with what Led said. More specialized and more focus on a specific type of character might help the group work aspect of Planetside. Maybe raise the benefits of each certification and increase the cost of them all, mostly focusing on the support roles such as medics and engineers.
