Is anybody having problems with VoiceIP? If so, do you have a router, and what brand is it? If not, do you have a router, and what brand is it?
I personally do not have a router and I can run a voice server flawlessly. I can also run the client without CTD.

yes, actually, every time I try and use it (3 trys), it crashes my game

Do you have a router or are you running any firewall software? I'm trying to determine if this is a game bug or people just don't know how to setup their firewalls/routers.

I seem to have trouble with Voice IP. If someone else starts it, it CAN work pretty well except that I am not able to talk. I can hear everyone else, but the 'y' button does nothing for me. All the other times, someone else starts a Voice IP channel The screen'll freeze for about 10-30 seconds then give an error message in the chat box.
I do have a router. It's a linksys one. I don't know the exact model because I'm not on my computer at home right now. I'll go check when I get off work.

I tried it, didn't work. Got some error.
I then restarted my Teamspeak server and we all had a good time the rest of the night. Since my outfit all has fast connections, we use the 16kb codec and its like we're talking in person.
You shouldn't have to open more ports to get it to work. If they can't get it to work over the same ports the game runs on, then they shouldn't implement it. It will just lead to support headaches for sony in the long run.

I have no router, no firewall(on) no nothing, directly connected to me anyway, I am at a dorm, and just use their net, but it is quite open (ecept p2p is blocked so I cant dl the patches right argh)

Vulcan, i'm willing to bet it's your dorm networks firewalls causing you problems. Unless your sys admin is an idiot they're not allowing any ports that aren't authorized (80 for HTTP, 21 and 22 for ftp, etc).
You can not send more than one applications data over one port. If you could do that then there would be no need for ports. Ports are used to seperate data so that different applications can use your bandwidth similtaneously. There is NO WAY they can make the voice servers work on the PS ports. It is simply not possible.

Oh, I know what the problem is, I went over there myself and mapped where the stuff was going, what is going on is the voice, like the patch, are being pushed into the p2p part of the network, and so I get to basically do w/o patches and voice since it is filtered down to nill (56k per 5-6 rooms i think total)... It is soo bad that I have to take my system to another network to patch it..... I mean B4k4^ni, I even told them what they needed to chage to get it to work.....

Using a Linksys router (the standard one). Using game's voice chat always causes CTD. Otherwise, my computer and all it's games run flawlessly. Roger Wilco runs flawlessly. Haven't tried TS2 yet, but I imagine it'll work fine too. I know how to configure my router. This is an issue that PS needs to resolve. If they want to utilize a special port, I'm fine with that, but they need to tell me the port without my having to hunt for the info.

I'll stick with text. I'm on 56k, and want to have max performance.

Sure they can. As long as the start and end point of the connection stays the same, you can pump as many different application data streams through 1 port as long as the client and server are built to parse it.
Ports are for connections, not applications. Sure some applications use certain ports by default, but thats more for ease of use. Specialized applications (such as PS) can really do whatever the hell they want when it comes to port usage.
You only receive 1 bit at a time so having multiple ports open does not make the system any faster or efficient.
port1:AA AA A AA A AAA A
port2: B BBB BB BB B BB
is no different than
port1:AABAABBBABBAABBABAAABBA
The problem comes in if when requesting a voice server, do the external players connect directly to you (Leader hosts)? Or do they still send their packets to sony who then distributes them back to players (SOE Hosts). I have not traced it out to see but if it's the former. then yes, extra ports will have to be open, and IMO a bad design.
If they don't run the voice services and spawn a pseudo chat server on the client, you will have problems:
1: Will have to use another port, people will call and complain cuz it doesn't work.
2: HPB is squad leader and tries to start a server for 10 people, saturates his bandwidth causing everything to lag, people will call and complain cuz it doesn't work.
And if you are still not convinced...ask anyone that plays AC2 how important it is to not use a 3rd party system for communication.

If you are hosting a voice conferencing session between PS players, you need to make sure that everyone can route your IP and that you have enough upstream bandwidth to host them. The integrated voice only uses a single listening TCP port of 37000, making it the easy to implement if you are behind a NAT/router/firewall. You should identify someone in your squad with the appropriate connection.
This port needs to be routable by other people connecting to you. SOE has indicated they plan to also offer a dedicated server option for the internal voice as an option for those who already have the resources to host a voice server.
The voice technology in PS is crystal clear, with practically no lag and minimal bandwidth with a simple NAT port configuration of any voice comm ever made. With its nice integration with the game, its is definately something worth getting going for your squad.

Thx for the info, I had a feeling it worked that way, but was hoping it didn't. I may know what to do, but being a person who makes networking easy for the people who don't know about it, I like to see complete integration....Someday.
I loved Teamsound, but it always spiked my CPU usage....hopefully that is worked out.

This is a whole new TeamSound technology that is being used in the game, written from the ground up - its rather amazing in terms of quality and performance.
The only issue people should encounter is making sure the person hosting the voice server is appropriate (ex: port mapped and bandwidth).

excellent...can't wait to try it.
