Last night I was on the Dalton server and joined the fight around Esamir. We were fighting for control of the northern most base located on the small island at the center of the continent. After parking my AMS just south of the base I headed toward the ridge located to the west. I noticed the NC were using the ridge to pump troops into the fight and I decided I'd try and cut off this avenue of approach for them.
Once the coast was clear I ran down and started mining the ridge. I placed about 15 of my allotted 20 mines staggared
along the bridge and then dropped down a couple of spitfires and motion sensors to hamper any infantry trying to cross. Just as I wrapped up laying my ambush I saw a Sunderer rumble over one of the hills and head straight for the bridge.
Well I didn't feel like being road kill so I started running for the friendly edge of the bridge. I got half way back across the
bridge and looked to see how close the Sunderer was behind me. As soon as I turned around I could see I wasn't going to make it and so I opened up figuring I was going to go down putting some plasma fire into his grill. Of course the driver saw me and with what I can only imagine was a maniacal grin he aimed that big bumper straight at my heart.
As he came across the bridge he hit about two of my mines in quick succession. The blast caused the big machine to rock
like a drunk on his last drink. Right in front of me the Sunderer went up onto the guard rails along the bridge and and the
driver panickly tried to get back on to the road way. Just as he got his front wheels back onto the bridge he hit another mine throwing him back onto the guard rail. For about 5 seconds the Sunderer straddled the bridge guard rail with it's left side dangling over the 50ft drop to the water below. I was still pumping rounds into the machine as it tetered back and
forth on the guard rail. The driver must have known what was coming as it slipped over the edge. I would swear he looked at me as the weight of his left side dragged the giant machine of death sideways and into the water. The last thing I
saw were all four wheels as it slipped over the rail.
I was stunned. Flabergasted. I couldn't believe it had happened right there in front of me. I thought I was going to die for sure but there I was without a scratch. I wish I could have seen it hit the water. That particular bridge is very high and the water is very deep with no way to get out. I know this because I had fallen into it before.
After the shock wore off I let out a yell of triumph. I gleefully told my squad what had happened and got some laughs and "wish I'd been there" remarks. Ivigorated with my success I remined the bridge and bunkered down for the next assault by the NC.
It wasn't long before an NC Lightning tried to cross. This guy was a little smarter. After hitting the first mine he stopped and backed up. I started laying into him with my punisher and rocklet combo. Soon my team mates added to the fire and the Lightning blew up just on the other side.
Well, I was really getting happy about my little ambush now. Scattered NC troops tried rushing over the bridge but they
all either died trying to cross or they would get jumped by the rest of my team up on the hills over looking the bridge.
At one point a Vanguard with a Lightning trailing behind him made a break across the bridge. Those Vanguards are tough customers, but the last of my mines disabled it just as it reached my side of the bridge where I was bunkered down beside a large tree. The gunner and driver jumped out and that's when I opened up at close range with my Punisher. As they came around the front of the tank the two Spitefires I'd placed at the end of the bridge added to the 9mm rounds I was sending their way. My team mates added to the fire and before long both of them went down along with the driver of the Lightning stuck behind the crippled Vanguard. Once the NC troops were dead we turned our attention to the disabled tanks and before long they were simply scraps of wreckage at the end of the bridge.
It was an exciting battle. The NC started doing Galaxy drops over the base and one of their Reavers found my AMS and blew it to pieces. Without easy access to more mines I had to abandon my position at the bridge. I did manage to get another AMS but I wasn't able to get near the bridge and so I had to deploy somewhere else.
The battle raged back and forth with the NC slowly gaining the upper hand as it came time for me to log off and get some sleep. I managed to get to BR8 and baught myself a Starfire MAX cert. I plan on using that to combat Reavers and Mosquitos searching for my AMS. All told it was a great night playing Planetside. :D
