I received an email today from Mj. Havoc, A PlanetSide beta tester, Here is the e-mail's content

I've just added a new Planetside Movie by an "Indy" director, Major
Havoc. The movie is called "Warrior v1.0". It was entirely filmed on
location while "imbeded" with a Planetside Outfit called "Insomniax
Irregulars".

Check out the movie here. (http://www.just-gamers.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=2)

.....but nothing really happened. You waited for the hart, took one shot with the BD and died.

Well.... uhh, I guess it's ok if you are out looking for a PS video to just watch, but dont expect much at all...
Next to no action, shows nothing off really, and just a lot of sitting around... Aside from seeing ONE harraser blow up and the player himself dying ONCE, that is the only action you get :(

That's pretty much a Day in my life, in my life, in Planetside. LOL

The words to the song pretty much match up with the video on the screen. It's a 70's thing.:D

They really just cut part of it out
Mirr's his is widescreen effect because he cut the top and bottom part to get rid of the extra stuff.
MajHavoc just cut his in the top left area leaving the bottom and right part of the hud out.

Zenny,

You're partly right, however, I can't take credit for it. The proggy I use to capture with only works in 640x480, the minimum you can set your PS screen to is 800x600. What you are seeing is just the 640x480 part of the screen. *shrug*

K i'll be Simon, it was horrible.

Ya missed alota stuff that Miir uses, which is mainly battle and keeping it at the same pace. The HART waiting was just gay, looking up and down the door for more than 30 seconds, ya shouldve just looked for a quick 3 seconds and go right to the takeoff. Also ya shouldve showed more action. Yes it was all about the one HART ride to the continent and dieing a minute after ya land. But really, get more funk to keep us going, i bet you lost many peeps in either the wait for a ride or the wait for a target thing. It needed action, thats all it needed. THe HART takeoff was good cause i never seen one take off....but thats just me....

if ya make another movie-dont wait for something for 3 minutes and add more action, more killing.

Tanx for the critique! Basically I was just goofing around when the idea sort of grew on it's own. A day in the life was just what it was for me as a player. Get weapons, wait for the Hart, drop, shoot, get killed, rinse and repeat. The reason for the delay at the HART was just that, I wanted to give the taste of really waiting for it, I suppose I accomplished that goal. ;) The movie was really about the music, and how it happend to match some of the on-screen stuff. I guess if there was an audience to be aimed for it was for those not in the beta. A different perspective than whats put out in the other trailers.

I'll keep your ideas in mind, if I do another one.

Thanx!

The movie was filmed at 15fps .avi to keep lag to a minimum, then compiled into .wmv at 30fps. Actually it's alot smother than I expected.

I wasn't the driver. I was a gunner that way I could get good shots as they came up. Damage easy? Not really, we went of a serious cliff and just took a small amount of damage, I wasn't recording at the time *sigh*. That thing rocks.

Much improvment.;)

Tho if ya wana be a pro ya need what the pro (Miir) uses, pure combat. Although you did have alot int he film, I say it needed no combat at all. it was a simple drive through the basic life of a soldier, from the HART to the mauder (or watever the vehilce is called). The only time it did slack off was when you were sitting in the turret and maybe the intermission through to the next continent (with the driver not responding for 10 seconds after going through.

But all and all, i give it a A-. It's suitible for all guys like me (non beta peeps). Much improvement! oh and thanks for the small detication;) .

I dunno if ya checked on Miir's movies, but if anythin about battles and stuff, you can stop listening to me and start asking him some questions....just incase i'm pulling you in the wrong direction (which i hope i ain't).

(notice this time i was the kind side of simon, if i was just his normal side, he'd still say it sucks:D )

Alot better then the first, things actually happened. Just a few recomendations.

1 - Turn off grass. Its a useless waste of resources.
2 - I hope it was caused by filming, but you either need to up your sensitivity or get a bigger mouse pad.
3 - Dont ignore the vanu lol. One point in the movie you completly ignore an enemy player to stare at a locked door.
4 - Never run strait at someone, and worse yet, never stand and stop to shoot. Crouch and stop is fine, standing..well thats just dumb.

Ok, those are more gameplay related then movie related. However, better gameplay makes better movies.

Oh, the maruader wasnt moving that slow. It was going up hill, and for some reason these big tough assualt buggy engines dont like hills.

Cool :)

I can say you are a bit noobie in making movies ( Don't worry , i am worse ! ) . You should get a program that allows a better resolution or something cause i can't read what do you guys write ( If you can't , it's ok ) . And ... Like other guys said , you should centrate on a really heavy battle , pure action , like Miir .

I will be waiting your next movie :p

I've made skate videos with my friend and still consider my self quite a n00b.. given this I can't understand why u guys go crazy over those malvision ones.

Yes, they are good.. but dude making stuff like that is common sense, a tiny bit of research and admitadly a lot of time :P

I haven't seen this yet, but as people are slating it I'll suggest what you need to do:

Watch tv and films, and pay close attenstion to how often they cut, what they do with angles. It's simple, simple stuff - just copy it and everyone thinks ure amazing :P

This usually means cut very quickly to stop people getting bored, doing things in time with any music your using and making a logical flow.

Again, *simple* stuff :P

Dear god 0_0

back to the drawing board with this one I think!

Main problem with this video is that . . . anyone can see this when they play the game, and the only reason it's not boring is because they are doing it.

E.g. - this doesn't quite happend in ures but it's a good example - If you filmed me sneaking around a base, and no one being there, it's boring for anyone other than me.. because I'll be scared there's someone there, and I'll be in control of moving and looking and so on. As a video, god damn that sucks!

Think, what are you trying to show? I'm assuming your trying to show just how cool planetside is right?

Well whats cool about it? Choose something, capture as much as you can of it (and plz for the love of god dnt capture it like u have ^_^) and make something short. people get bored, fast - and that bit where you just stand there for tha HART is god damn boring! If you want to show the passing of time, ok, film it normal speed and look at the clock, but speed it up. Same effect, people know how long a second is, they see the clock count down the understand it takes a long time.

You need to chance scene about 1 million times more often then you do - watch tv they'll change every few seconds, again people get bored.

Do some research, see how tv does it, and have another crack at it.

Ok, I know watching any video is better then watching no video, but....... About the "Planetside Warrior v1.5" video......

It was just real plain. Nothing really happened in it.

Usually you want to show action scenes, and battles. Not the enemy hacking your base, and you getting locked out.
Or mounting a wall turret, and shooting at nothing......

Oh, and just a word of advice to game play-wise..... When running around the corners up stairs, use your mouse and strafe keys.
If there were an enemy on any of those stairs, you would have been toasted before you even saw them.

And the riding around in the jeep at the end was just.........

But I must say, the pod drop scene was nice

People get bored watching a video without action in. :-)

If I could get an actual good host, I could post the first video I've made. I was sad to see somebody else did the same hart-intro type thing I did. :-/

Video's are actually pretty easy to make, just really time consuming unless you have a freaking super computer. Compiling a 3 minute video I made took me almost an hour.

Oh, btw, some advice - or at least what I do:

I have a video camera that keeps track of the position it is on the tape, hours:minutes:seconds etc. To record gameplay, I have s-video-out going from my video card into my video camera, and record it onto the camera. I keep a pad and a pencil on my desk, and write down the minutes:seconds of cool things that happen, so that when I'm later making a video, I can easily access whatever it was that I wanted to include in the video.

Later to get the video back onto my computer, I playback the video camera tape into my TV tuner card, which has an s-video-in.

Using a program that directly video captures while you're playing isn't a very good idea, kills processor speed and takes up a lot of hard drive space. That was what I actually tried to do first.

Of course, the only problem with what I do, is that you need three things:

1. A video card with some type of video-out.
2. A good video camera. My very first attempt used a really old video camera(literally one of the first portable color video cameras ever, it was my grandpa's), and the final quality was horrid. Borrowing my dad's new one now, it's pretty awesome.
3. A TV-in/TV-tuner/whatever card. Something that'll capture the playback from the video camera.
