Thats right, the patch is up. Its an art patch, so put in a movie, it'll take a while :).

And, just as an interesting side note, it downloads a file called offlinetraining.pak. Hmmmm, interesting ;).

Yeah, its a monster. I gave up all hope of playing this game much this evening as soon as I read the words "art patch". I can just start downloading and hope for a speedy recovery.

Can they not start mirroring this elsewhere??

Im tired of having to wait hours longer because of my location and the thousands of people downloading from their server.

The short answer: No.

The long answer: Hell no.

The complete answer: Beta testing is more than just making sure the code works and the game is balanced. They need to test their machines and bandwidth to see if they can stand under a "Live" load. This includes the patch server. In between the game going gold and going to printing, there will be probably 2-3 patches, which EVERYONE who buys the game will need to get. Going with a (severe) underestimation of 50,000 units sold on opening day, that is a hell of a lot of work in patches. Of course it won't work perfectly, but the idea is to make as painless as possible. Additionally, the game is not static with 2 guys working part time on a patch to fix some little thing once every 3 months like a normal game...Planetside is going to have regular (possibly even frequent) downtime for additional patches to introduce new content, fix bugs, etc, etc, etc...every time this happens, every player is again going to have to patch. If the patch server doesn't work, nobody plays, so clearly a great deal of effort needs to be invested to be sure that the damn thing is working.

I'm sure mirror sites are out of the question for a whole pile of reasons (the ease of cheating being foremost).
