mao may have been bad, but I'm not seeing what he did that even comes close to Stalin - who holds the attrocities record as far as I know. Plus Stalin fucked up everything on a global scale and could have started ww3 any day of the week.

I'm going to have to go with Stalin on this one.

Nav, Mao was the dictator of china and holds the record for the most people killed under his rule during the twentieth century, something along the lines of 40 million i believe, but that's just off the top of my head, i'll go look up the real figure in a minute

Yes, but not only was Mao inspired (in part) by Stalin, so were many others, including comtemporaries Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il. So if Stalin is even partially responsible for the ideology and methods he spawned, never mind his own atrocities, he's clearly the worst of 20th century dictators. Now, if this were a poll about the worst mass murderers, that'd be different.

inspiration doesn't count, it's the fault of the one who causes the deeds, you can't blame it on anyone else

anyways, i have an article here that puts the number of deaths under his rule up to 80 million

linkage
http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/dictators/mao/

that article doesn't even mention those killed during his revolution

Deaths under the regime are an important factor in determining the horrific nature of a dictator, however the power to change the world for the worst, influence millions, and strike fear in the hearts of those even in the future are also important considerations.

Josef Stalin. Given time, this man would have overthown them all.

Doobz
2003-05-08, 08:35 PM
probably, but as it stands, Mao is reponsible for more deaths than any other dictator at this point in time

Doobz
2003-05-08, 09:23 PM
i did give you a link

but if you want some more linkage
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/tyrants.htm

keep in mind, mao was the most lethal, although not necessarily the most sadistic, but then again, no matter how a person dies, they're still gone

now according to this source, we get some very different numbers

Dude - famine doesn't count. If there wasn't famine he wouldn't be on the list. That site is bunk, hitler gets credit for all the deaths of ww2 - but stalin who caused more and inflicted more doesn't.

Stalin wins hands down.

Doobz
2003-05-08, 11:38 PM
no, the famine was his own doing, did you read what happened during the famine as well?

Mao is realized by most world record organizations and other associations as the twentieth century's most lethal dictator, that should say something.

you also have to look at the population of the race or religion or region or country

that doesn't matter, a person dead is still a person gone, no matter population, race, or religion
