My exp with FPS's is that due to the game mechanics some are hopelesss on my modem while other are pretty good and I only feel a slight disadvantage from my connectin.
Whats this like?

I'm not actually in beta, but from what I've heard, it does'nt really affect your game-play if your a support role. However if your in a huge battle, well, then you dead, basicaly.
I also heard that flying with a 56k is awful.

It's FINE on 56k when you aren't around many people, but as soon as you get into a huge group it becomes hard for you to catch up with the server. There is no shot lag though, because the collisions are done clientside. Sort of an odd system, but it works well. :)
I try to stay out of major battles though or else the amount of information trying to get sent to me becomes too much and I get 2 minute (or longer) delays. You can still walk around while you're 'lagged' though, so you can get away from all the people and stop the lag cycle. ;) It's not half as bad as I thought it would be, and instead of it being a ping problem, it's a bandwidth issue. Ping isn't a factor at all.

Bad bandwidth can still make you a great AMS driver.

It will be much better for you to have cable or at least dsl but it shouldnt be too bad on 56k, as everyone else said only in highly populated areas.
