Okay, we've been told that the mission generator has been removed. But ... isn't a mission what defines a squad? So with no missions, how are squads set up?
Or are all missions generated by players now (instead of automatic)? Is there kinda like a "black board" where people can advertise missions?

It's better than that actually.
If you're a squad leader, you can do a search for any certification you desire. All players that have their LFG (looking for group) flag set will be available as a potential result in that search. So...squad leaders can do a quick search for all (for example) dropship pilots and select from a list to give a /tell to.
If you're a player, you can advertise all your certs, or only the ones that you REALLY want someone to utilize you for. In otherwords, if I have Bolt Driver and Combat Engineering, I may advertise one cert one day, and the other on the next day, depending on whether I want to play as a Sniper that day or as a Defensive Combat Engineer.
You see?
Power on both sides of the equation, so finding groups and fitting in should be pretty easy.

*drool* So say a squad is looking for a new member, it can just look on this list and its like a damn meat market? How cool is that! :rawr:

actually the EQ players asked for it =)
Dev's decided to stop nerfing classes and agree with us for once =p

oh.. and in EQ this was added ~2-3 years into the game, so was too late, very few people used it... I hope more people on planetside use it (and probably will have to since not everyone can broadcast)---the fact it's going in at the start will really help make everyone aware of it
i agree, barely anybody used /lfg when i played

interesting. i wish there was a 'blackboard' - as he said - type deal though. once you choose everything you want for squad/outfit then you go to the drawing board to coordinate the idea of the attack.

I know where that is coming from... It seems things started to stop being neferd as soon as that PR guy left and was replaced with the new guy... Cripes, it's been too long. I've even forgotten the new guys name. :(

Nice news. :D

A question though:
Will it show the skills of each player on the list or will it just be the name? Like will it be something like this:
Jinxmasta
Advanced Hacking
X BEP
X CEP
XXX kills
XXX deaths
I think this would be cool so commanders could choose between newbie people and veteran people. So if it is a hard mission, they might want better guys. However, sometimes it's nice to help a newbie out too so you can look for newbies.

damn i cant wait until the open beta. i have ten quadri-ramillion questions hehe :) especially since new confusing / intersting news comes out every day.

They should add in a favourites feature, so if you've played with some guys before and liked their style, but dont want something more organised, like a clan, you can quickly find them and message them, instead of looking thru hundreds of ppl.

There are favorite's for weapons.
I agree it would be a great idea to have the ability to bookmark certain troops and outfits
Jinxmasta
2002-12-18, 09:03 PM
Favorites sounds good and so does a small profile! Here you could put stuff about your character and all that so you might convince some squad leader to pick you for the squad.
Sandtaco
2002-12-18, 09:05 PM
That's a little overboard. Did I hear that were going to use those message boards? I thought those things were crap.
Hatte
2002-12-18, 09:06 PM
Hehe, sounds like a clan recruitment type of system, not a 'lets go play for a hour' system, but i agree that some sort of stats would be helpful for comm's to pick capable people.
diluted
2002-12-18, 09:07 PM
..what? i dunno if a favs system would work. if you have a large squad/outfit then it wouldnt be the best idea. but perhaps categories such as "Great defense team: name, name, name" stuff liek that. or just buds you meet in a misc category. check out AIM's layout. like that.
Jinxmasta
2002-12-18, 09:09 PM
I think there should be a ranking system so you can just click on a button and there you have a long list of the top people. You could choose between top 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, and so on. This would be determined by BEPs, CEPs, and some kill to death ratio score thingie.

Which leads to stat whoring, and that would ruin the point of the game, the best players usually dont cooperate very well, because they are all vying(sp?) for the top spot.

2002-12-18, 09:19 PM
jinx, if that was the way it worked, then the noobs would never get to join a squad. they'd have to maybe tag along without officially being invited. oh are BEPs shared between members of a squad or all-or-none?
Jinxmasta
2002-12-18, 09:20 PM
Well to get the top spot, wouldn't you need to cooperate? I've heard that going lone wolf doesn't work in this game and if you try and do everything by yourself, you will get killed.
BLuE_ZeRO
2002-12-18, 09:21 PM
That seems to be the general consensus. If you try and go cowboy you're just going to get owned.
Hatte
2002-12-18, 09:21 PM
I believe that they are given to every member in the squad as if they had made the kill/hack/etc. themselves. but i may be wrong.

I also said they could do it the other way too so that newbies could get picked too if the squad leader was being nice. Oh and I think the majority of squads will be formed without too much organization and strategy. I mean, you need some but everything doesn't need to be top notch. What I mean by this is that a lot of squads are going to be put together in a small vicinity around a base. Like a squad commander just shouts out that he's making a squad quickly and almost anyone can join at first, and then fill in the specialization spots later.
Jinxmasta
2002-12-18, 09:24 PM
ALL the BEPs are shared throughout the whole squad meaning the person who got the kill and the person that did nothing will get the same amount of BEPs and full BEPs at that.

Going solo would only be useful to a point, to disrupt the lighter troops, as in a sniper or a mosquito, they would be unable fight heavies for extended periods or even to take bases by themselves, which is really the only useful thing to do.
BLuE_ZeRO
2002-12-18, 09:28 PM
People don't go solo to help out their squad most of the time. They get tired of working as a team so they just go out on their own.

Oh and a sniper or mosquito is NOT solo. If you are going solo with a sniper or a mosquito, you are stupid. The Mosquitos should have other aircraft and ground support with them and snipers should have the squad nearby.
Hatte
2002-12-18, 09:37 PM
What is a solo class then? i can seen snipers having an reasonable effect by themselves, so hence, solo, also mosquitos would have to run from heavies, like i said, but could take on infantry with some success. also as sniper(with vech. certs) can make a speedy getaway should some1 get too close, same w/ the mosquito. but infantry or MAX will have a hard time running.
BLuE_ZeRO
2002-12-18, 09:39 PM
Solo isn't a good term to use as far as being a productive member. Maybe a class like sniper goes off by himself but to accomplish a certain objective like provide sniper cover for infantry or something. Solo just means his going off not for any benefit of the team but just to rack up some of his own kills.
diluted
2002-12-18, 09:41 PM
personally , that seems impossible for a solo-er to be efficient unless its uh.. a .. max? i dunno it just doesnt seem like it'd work.
Hatte
2002-12-18, 09:41 PM
I think we can all agree with that Blue_zero.
I dunno, diluted, what i see as an effective solo'er would be someone who can do some damage, then make a quick getaway to heal/repair then do it again.

Solo? How about a Vanu MAX of death!
Actually if you really feel like solo'n its pretty easy. Find the biggest most chaotic fight and go there. Shoot people. Have tea, maybe a beer. Great fun while you wait for clan buddies to join.

About that ratings where the Commanders could see people like 1-30 with their skills ranked, why wouldn't you let most of the noobs in too? If they've got a neg score I understand, but you get the same points for taking down a base alone as you do with 100 people so whats the dif? (I know the points change for challenge/ difficulty) I think the Comdrs would let in most everyone, it seems easy enough to boot out a griefer, so I don't see it as a problem, who knows if that extra gun will come in handy........

2002-12-18, 09:57 PM
i think ALL roles will have to be played in teams to be effective, others can be less than others however, a sniper CAN go lone wolf, but not effectively.... to do it properly u would need a stealth to take out other snipers a spotter and maybe some backup close by if needed
Hatte
2002-12-18, 10:02 PM
All the roles are designed for use in squads but I think of a sniper as more backup to some other group than the other way around. And if u have a group for backup, that isnt very solo is it.
BLuE_ZeRO
2002-12-18, 10:11 PM
Exactly... Snipers are expendable if you choose to use them. Rather than having support troops for the snipers they should act like support troops for the rest of your squad. Not going to get anything done by having a sniper war.

There definatly wont be many lone wolfs in this game heh.
Im sure it will be possible to do some things on your own if you want to however.

You might see quite a few when the game first comes out but it will very likely drift back to the neccesity of teams idea that the game was based on soon after that.

I would be very strongly against a system with kill-to-death ratio displayed. As said before I'm very sure this would lead to statwhoring very fast. I'm afraid people start playing very defensive just because they're afraid to look bad in their stats.
I also believe #BEP is enough info, it should give you a fair estimate of how much experience a certain character has.

yeh i agree cus i hate the way in say renegade that it has on the front page ure kills death ratio n im always like well it s pointless neway cus im always getting kiled cus of lag. so half of those deaths dont count or when ure playig a sniper only game n sum1 cums on in a flame tank n totally busts you. thats what spoils games. peeps who ignore the hosyts or admins/devs
