whats with the annoying lawnmowers lately.
seems like people are using tanks and planes more as rolling pins than with thier intended roles.
you are happily shooting the guts out of an NC in a pretty big battle and then splurt....you are dead as a vanguard zips by at warp speed like a streak of blue lightning. as your ghost flutters around your smushed corpse you notice this wakky vanguard running around in circles like it is a shark eating minnows. mowing down all the infantry who cant jump out of the way because of the lag friendlier lack of physics.
so. nerf the lawnmower tactic (not the vehicles but the obvious runover exploit)

LMAO I love running over people! In alot of tanks that is all the driver can do for dmg. Magriders have their own little gun but honestly its hella fun to splat infantry.
Zooming along--- MISSLE LOCK--- SPLAT dead TR crouching and holding his missle launcher is his flat hands 8)
THis happened 3x to me so far tonight.
:vsrocks:
I love that missle lock, nice warning!

Running down a max with an ant?!?!?! Whats wrong with that? I only run ppl down when that my last resort or im just out of rockets. Hell with all the jacked up AA goin on, sometimes you cant stop or slow down at all. So i'll run my reaver full throttle and only inchs from the ground. Nobody expects to get their head punched in by a reaver bumper. And ya know what else? Ima keep doin it too.

I vote to nerf it somehow without lowering the usability of vehicles for their actual purposes.
I can just imagine how much this tactic will get out of hand when flood gates open at release. If they leave it in they should make a funny *squish* sound when you run someone over. I bet thats the only sound youll hear in the game.
so what you telling us is that a tank SHOULDN'T be able to run someone over?
wtf are you talking about.
get out of the way if you dont want to be run over.

The problem is that its impossible to get out of the way. Even when you think you got out of the way, you actualy aren't, and still get smooshed.

I dont think its cheap to run folks over. You pay for your vehicle cert same as you pay for your weapon cert. Exactly the same. If infantry isnt bright enough to get outta the way, and stay off the roads, well then..... they do make dandy hood ornaments. And getting hit by a vehicle isnt an instant death sentence, heck, I've survived tank love taps. Its all about the skill of the driver vs. the amount of spec assault and AV weapons in the area. Seriously folks, if you keep gettin run over then change your tactics, move thru trees and along hills that vehicles cant access, when inside a bases walls either be IN the base or on the walls (gleefully potting those stupid vehicles with nades and rockets). Tactics people, tactics. This isnt Counter-Strike, this isnt your average FPS deathmatch, this isnt even Tribes. To me, this game is a superior test of 'twitch' abilities combined with actual tactical thought. All the weapons are availiable to everyone, everyone has the same health, stamina and access to the same armors.

well i would jump out of the way if the jump physics where good enough. but the physics are not that complex for dexterious moves like dodging a tank especially for a max. there needs to be just as much damage hiting a max as there is hitting a tree.
and there needs to be some stop power like a tree.

^yes
The only issue I had with vehicles running people over was fixed when they made it so wraiths and basilisks take massive damage if they run into people.

When I hit a max, it acts JUST like hitting a tree and I suffer alot of damage. Did this about 4 times last night, nearly flipped my magrider on one.

Yeah, running down 2 maxs with an ant will kill the ant.
There should be an animation that plays right before you get hit by your own empires vehicles. Basicly your avatar should jump outa the way, Yell, "Hey buddy! Watch where you're goin'!!!, then gives them the finger.

Would be silly if you couldn't run people over.... Although as said above would be even worse if you ran peopele over without taking any damage....

Sunderer - Champ of the mower tactics! Last night, I managed to actually plow an ant of a cliff on Cery. My gunners were apparently asleep as i kept off a bit for them to pound the ant. when they just sat and did nothing, i floored it and tboned the thing right over the edge.
poor ant driver.

I used to have a problem with lawnmower men. But not anymore! Stick close to trees, they provide great cover, and most of the time, vehichles won't try to run you over for fear that they will hit the tree and mess up their lovely paint job :D. I just put the tree between me and them, wait till they pass, and hit them from behind. When they make another pass, I do it all over again.

After accidentally TKing like 2 ants i found that the deliverer is great for squashing them. Instead of ramming them it just drives over top and they blow up :)

I vote for "nerf the damn lawnmowers so i dont get "run over" when im 5 yards away and yet the damn hitboxes are so huge i get killed anyway."
They need to take off the damn radius so you accualy have to be hit by the vehicle, not just their wind whiping by you

I kinda feel that vehicles are doing exactly what tanks were originally invented for, to break up infantry standoffs and trenching in. Sure, the game version moves super fast and squishes people rather than shooting them but overall vehicles do a great job of busting into a base or stirring up the infantry that stays permanently behind a hill or other cover.
As for tactics, I've said the same thing for MAX. Every squad should have a minimum of one AV and two heavy infantry players in reinforced armor and carryin a decimator in one slot. Also, runnng across the middle of open fields is inviting all sorts of trouble from both vehicles and snipers. Stick to moving from tree to rock to tree.
Lawnmowers WILL crash, will get stuck trying to maneuver in tight to scrape players off of trees and rocks. The second they slow down, stop, back up, pour your launcher into them. If you are running around as infantry without the correct tools for the job, and without taking the time to move the longer, safer paths, simply expect to die and respawn a lot. Heck knows there are many different ways to play.
Due to the wipe, there are not enough decimators and AV being carried around yet, maybe not for a couple more days. Both MAX and vehicles will appear overpowered until the average squad is made up of 10 players at BR10 or over. The tides will turn, and infantry will turn all predatory on the lighter vehicles, and will be able to drive the heavier ones back repeatedly for repairs.

This isnt a discussion of are the lawnmowers a valid tatic, or are they being used as they would be use in real combat. This is an issue of is this tatic good for gameplay. Lawnmowering is not a tatic that is good for the game. It is a cheap easy kill and it sucks to be on the other end of it.
The real issue to be solved is if your hit by a vhc then more then instant death you might take some damage and be tossed back. After all it is a game and we can surive a rocket in the face why not just be bounced off the tank with some armor damage.

Yokom has a point.
Everything from Reinforced and up should be able to withstand some pretty heavy abuse. Maybe lower the damage done by impact some?

Hmm... I'm going to respectfully disagree. I'm normally a ground pounder the whole way. i like to spec out infantry before i pick a vehicle cert.
And the lawnmower tactics deployed by drivers is effective and I really don't think it takes away from the game play. If i'm hot footin' it, i'm always aware of wherei am at, what is around me, and checkin' my 6 ever so often as to avoid unnecessary run downs. Its going to happen, and most of the time, its pretty damn funny on either end when it does.
As an infantry, i never run straight for the main gate of a base, i always stick ot cover, use rocks to protect from gun fire and wanna be run downs. i love it when the uber vanguard trues to run me over, only to find themselves stuck in the rocks, and me running from rock to rock hittin' it with a striker.

lately i have noticed vanguards not even using thier guns but just doing figure 8's on the lawn at 90mph.
they are impossible to hit or dodge.
ruins the game....the only tactic i can use to defeat it is to hide in the rocks or not venture out.
perhaps this is where the engineer needs to start laying mines to counter the problem.
but i played the adv engineer before the character wipe.
I never got exp worth a crap for it with all the hard work put into it and always got greif when a turret or mine did some indirect damage to a friendly.
seemed like the only way to get xp as a medic/engineer is to be in a squad making the xp for you.
but thats another topic.
Jarlo
2003-05-09, 01:52 PM
That may be due to the fact that the vanguard did not have a gunner. In that case all they can do is run over infantry.

stuff as many pillows as you want inside that reinf armor, because it won't do much when a 20 ton tank takes a swipe at you.
instead, why don't we talk about valid ways to avoid collision with tanks
1. run around rocks, pillars, trees, walls, etc.
2. be indoors
3. be above ground
4. be in another tank

Runnin people over is a perfectly valid way of killing someone! You should just move out of the way. Do vehicles get damaged by doing this?

The game world has so much cover!! Use your head or lose it to that swooping reaver or that crazy Vangard doing the 8's in the clearing.
I got run over by a Vangard in RF armour once with full health and full armour...left me at 5 health! I just repaired my own armour in seconds, activated the regen implant, reached for my Striker for some payback...

The wise soldier always stay near a solid cover.
The wiser soldier always listen for the sound of incoming engines.
Obstacles solid enough to block incomming vehicles are everywhere on the map, and it's easy to look often behind you.
