No pointers, just always think 53 steps ahead of your opponent and dont make stupid moves.
I cant think of any resources where you can jack yourself some info, but a friend of mine got this big ol book of chess (about 700pgs) all on how to get a checkmate in so and so moves. It's creepy cause everypage gota chess board with all the pieces arranged differently.

Most really good chess players have two skills:
1. Good Memorization
2. Good visualization
The biggest trick is to be able to visualize how the board may look in 6 moves, and why. Predict his moves, seeing why he makes his moves, knowing how you will react, and then seeing how he will react is the biggest trick.

Sorry, hehe, couldn't resist. I'm not normally a nit-picker for spelling. It was just kind of a funny error. :D

My best advice is to continue playing...a lot. The more you play, the sharper your game will get.
Always try to learn from each of your losses...and wins. Take notation and analyze your game after the fact.
Try to see the game as a series of patterns. Most beginners look at a position and really don't see a "picture" of what's going on. Look at every piece on the board. Visualize each and every square that the piece can move to, what it threatens, and what threatens it. Don't look at each square individually, visualize all of the squares together in the pattern.
Think of the game as warfare. You start off with the same resources as your enemy. Do what you can to limit their movement, and to maximize your own. Treasure your resources, and use them wisely. Do not flippantly sacrifice them.
Those are a few things I can give you. I played competitive scholastic chess from 6th grade until graduation. I also played in several tournaments after graduation. It can be a rewarding pasttime that you can carry on with you for the rest of your life.

Biggest tip: Do not underestimate the pawn! Great for covering your bases and limiting your enemy, when deployed properly.
Second biggest tip: Accidently knocking the board over during a loss is not a "bad" thing
Chess is just a strategy game. It's actually quite lame. Try something more challenging like Starcraft or something. Get off the board people. Board games are so 80's.

On 2nd thought...yer right. This is too old skewl for some people. I mean the game's been around for what? Hundreds? Maybe THOUSANDS of years? Yes, definitely something that won't stand the test of time...
I mean if you don't try the most current "fad", never know what you might miss.
I'm sure monopoloy will be around for a long ass time as well. Smoking has been around for a long time. So has slavery. Non of them are worth a damn when compared to current developments. What could I use as an example on complex fun.. hmm maybe Planetside?

The top hat is a sign of wealth and style...
To get wealth and style, one needs lots of money...
To get lots of money, one needs one or many monopolies...
Thus... the top hat owns you all.
