View Full Version : Strolled by the SONY booth, and here is a Planetside report

Sony had a pretty nice booth up. EQ2 looks good as do the other games show casing there.

I stopped by the Planetside booth and I bring you some good and unfortunately some bad news.

- Naval Warfare is definitely going to happen, it's just a matter of when. There will be bases near water that can be captured from a water incursion. Apparently there will be attack ships as well as ships that can deploy troops. Hover craft like structures.

- Some bases are going to get redesigned, there will be some better base defense structures up. The guy I spoke to (Forgot his name) said that bases will get a defensive overall, and maybe mini turrets in the base. Not definite though.

- New types of Aircraft and Weapons are on the board, some that don't necessarily kill your opponent. He wouldn't exactly elaborate on what that meant.

- Command structure 1-5 may get a slight redesign. Espically 3-5.

- New continents are definitely going to be in the works, unfortunately this will be more of an expansion within the next 10-12 months. So don't hold your breath anytime soon for new places to capture.

- Weapon balancing is still taken place. I specifically asked about the DC MAX and he felt it was fine actually. I disagreeded of course, but, he explained to me he actually felt the terrans were a somewhat weak empire. I was baffelled by the comment and got a little perturbed. If this is the current line of thinking, I question if they are still going to balance things correctly.

Now for the bad news.

- The experience system isn't really going to change that much. Apparently the base system you see now is it, it will get slightly refined but you won't be seeing that many gains. Gains meaning actual experience earned. You won't ever gain more than 1800 EXP points on a base cap, ever. And the average gains would be between 300-500 EXP/CEP. I was a little dismayed to hear this.

- I asked about bases all being the same. IE- Same design and such. They won't be changed anytime soon, this is something towards an expansion. New types of bases, IE- Not cosmetic, but how they function isn't on the drawing board. Which is disapointing considering there is so much more they could do.

- Zerging. Can't do much about zerging, it's up to the players how they play. That was pretty much it on that.

- Towers- I asked him if towers were going to be looked at in the future. He said probably not, they are an intergrel part of the base/game design.

That's pretty much it as of now. Ask away

BTW, apparently once you hit BR14, they have double levels so to speak. It's going to be implemented at retail. Anyone here play EQ? They had these things called hell levels where it would take Double experience to get through a particular level. This looks like it may cross over to PS which is unfortunate. But only after BR14.

I dont see any of the "bad news" as actual bad news :p

Thanks for bringing us news tho. Did you take any pics?

Oh, one other thing.

Totally forgot about this. Apparently the 3 Heavy assault empire weapons are doing too much damage. They play tested them a bit and felt they could be toned down in the future. Probably around the time of release.

I agree, the bad news isn't that bad. And I think the DC MAX is just fine as well.

And for the last time... there is no zerging!

Hmm weird this guys says things directly opposite of what the devs say regarding exp and such.
At its heart the goal behind the revised exp systems is to continue to give you the same amount of exp for the capture that you received before but to close some loopholes and issues that became apparent while analyzing data. We're hoping that the new system when final won't require too much of an adjustment to most players' style while closing off the other issues.

From Sporkfire(DEV) on beta board.
And from TWIST
Recapture is already worth more than capture. As we can work other reasonable ways to award base defense in, we will (since allowing the enemy to capture base first isn't really great defense).

Lowering the amount of experience you get for base caps sounds fine. Same with "hell levels". That just means you wont max out your character in a week (not counting those crazy people who will play for a week non-stop).

And the average gains would be between 300-500 EXP/CEP.

Jesus H. Christ. If I only average 500 CEP per base cap I'd better get other sources of CEP as well. Getting to BR THREE will take months otherwise. I've been thankful for big base caps so far because even then I barely gain one EXP box. And keep in mind I don't get BEP in addition to CEP.

I specifically asked about the DC MAX and he felt it was fine actually. I disagreeded of course, but, he explained to me he actually felt the terrans were a somewhat weak empire. They're out of their fucking gourds. The TR are WEAK? Either they're smoking some good shit over in St. Louis or the TR players at SOE are simply bad. This does bode well for future balance - what they did to the Vanu was probably simply to stop the whining. They probably thought the Vanu were alright to begin with.

- Towers- I asked him if towers were going to be looked at in the future. He said probably not, they are an intergrel part of the base/game design.

They're important, but the way they work now makes no sense. Where does the power come from? Nearby bases? Direct warpgate link? (If that's true why don't bases have that?) What?

The Jackhammer, MAYBE. Maybe. But fuck no on the Lasher and Chaingun. Again, I'm honestly starting to wonder if they know how to play their own game.

I'll still be buying, but this isn't encouraging...

Good info. At least they're not adding XP loss for dying or anything like that....

The idea of hell levels is terrible. It reminds me of EQ.

If they put naval warfare in, they are definately going to have to redesign the continents to include much more water, or allow you to fly and take ships from continent to continent without warpgates.

TR is fine especially the DC Max. I played TR to BR13 and now constantly play NC. I think ill probably play NC at release. I use mostly common pool weapons and it comes down to what i want to fight against not with. For me the DC max is easier to surivive than the pounder as an infantry...

Just learn to MOVE, i can get 2-3 decimators off (3 if i miss ;)) and kill it long before it can do half damage to me if i strafe and surge if necessary. The pounder with its splash is my worst enemy, only from lucky hits or being afar can i take that thing down.

The only reason TR are looking so good now is that thier two stregths (debated).. The cycler and DC max effect the most obvious aspect of the game. Close up indoor combat in bases. Thats really all there is to it. And right now, thats where most of the action is. Once there is more coordination between players this will change.

Even with the old EXP system, I was at level 15 after a MONTH of 3-4hrs a day gaming. It'll be at least a year before you can max out your character.
