I'm east coast so my only choice is Emerald atm. Some of my local friends picked Emerald too. What happens when everyone gets home from work/school and they want to play with their buddy that has been already playing today. I'm sure more servers will come up thru the night, but they will make some folk have to decide to start over or join a already full server. This is poor planning on SOE side. My friend that is already on asked if there will be character moves and the CSR said he didn't know. I've been in the beta for awhile now and was looking foward to a great opening night, but this open servers as people log in plan is just plain stupid.

Look at games like DAoC. They opened servers based on "expected" populations instead of opening new ones as they filled up. That game is left with over half the servers underpopulated, a few severely underpopulated, and a few overpopulated.
The problem is once you open a server, you can't close it again. You can't merge servers without changing names and pissing people off. It's better to open them as demand happens. It will make it rough in the beginning, but in the end the game will be better off.

You have 2 choices in DAoC: Crowded and laggy or empty and not laggy.
I chose the secret third option: PlanetSide. :D

I would not be worried about it, my problem is all the east coast servers seem to be in different locations. I got sweet pings to kinkaid (or whatever the other east server was) but not to emerald.

I think it'll be fine as long as they don't wait a couple of weeks before opening the other servers from beta back up. I won't lose any sleep over having to restart a br6 or 7 character if I change servers. Heck, you get to br3 without actually doing anything.
