It's an interesting split in the outfit I'm in. There's a fairly large portion that weren't in beta, so are rushing to buy it. A goodly sized hunk of beta folk are picking it up.
But, a goodly sized hunk of our outfits beta folk are not picking it up. One segment is a group of four friends, who decided together. Mostly, the reasons mentioned have been what you would expect: Price (exp. monthly fee), lack of depth/content, and just got bored.
I was in beta, and plan on getting it myself. I saw a poll on *cough* another site *cough* that was running fairly stongly in favor of folks getting it.

*Raises hand*
I still think there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out, I think a lot of the secondary weaponry needs some tweaking (no point in calling something anti vehicle if it cant at least slow down a enemy vehicle as a example).
I have a feeling this game is gonna have a very shoddy launch, partly because anyone who wanted to play the game got to during the beta, most people got to have thier questions about the game answered for free, instead of most other games where the beta wasnt wide open so you had people buying the game at release to see if it was any good.
The game has a ton of possibilities that need to be expanded, but I dont see anything really other then a new vehicle or gun added for about 3 months, so untill then just gonna keep myself informed best I can about the game, and see whether I feel its worth buying then.
I am very curious to see what the level of burnout/turnover is gonna be in this game, thats gonna be key to its longetivity.

Unfortunately I didn't.
It's not that I have an undying hate for PS or its devs, its a great game. But some people like it and some people don't (just like any other game), and I am one of those people that don't. There are many reasons really, mainly that its pay to play, which I feel for the things it offers, is really not worth it. I had fun in beta, but the only reason I really liked it is because there wasn't a monthly fee. Sure PS offers new gameplay of supposedly thousands and thousands people in massive battles, but it just doesn't have that kind of gameplay that tears me away from some of the other great FPSers out there. Personally Chrome wins my vote http://www.chromethegame.com . I really think PS could have been much better with some changes.
1. If it wasn't MMO. Sure MMO is fun, but you give up all the liberaties(sp) of having your very own server and the ability to make maps, make skins, make mods etc. I know the devs are there but really nothing gets changed unless they feel like it needs to be. I personally like smaller, tactical battles that involve scouting and real-life type things etc.
2. If there wasn't leveling up, but it was handled in a different way. Well its cool being able to level up, but damn, you are so limited in the first levels and in most FPSes you don't really have to earn the ability to drive vehicles etc. Personally I loved Tribes 2 and the concept of "If you have power, you can have all the vehicles and equipment whenever you want" and I hate to see that you have to earn different guns etc.
So anyway its just a personal preference and PS just doesn't suit my tastes. I had fun playing the beta but it really got boring after a while.
Again, I'm not bashing PS or the devs/Sony etc. so I hope those of you who are getting it have fun for as long as you play it.

Also, I'd like to know how many people are playing after about a month or 2 after release.

I was in the beta, the reason I'm not buying it right away has nothing to do with the cost of the game.
Although everyone keeps saying it's not about the "xp" that's all anyone cares about when playing. Moving from base to base for the 15 minute cap out xp points. Untill the game gets a patch that adds strategy to the game by making the bases worth fighting over not just to capture but to hold onto and to make sense strategically, I'm not playing.
If the devs get around to doing this the game will be worth playing over and over again on the same map. I can understand why they slowed the game down by nerfing the xp kill points, but making it so people take a whole month to get one character to br 12 might be a mistake, they'll figure out the game doesn't have enough depth long before that.
Maybe I'll have to wait for Planetside 2 for that to happen. *shrug*

Monthly fee is $12.99, unless you have an everquest subscription, then you can have both for $21.99.
I have not and will not (in the forseeable future) be getting it, my monstrous P3 450, 256 RAM, 32 MB TNT2 Video card can't quite run it, and a new machine is not in the cards from a financial standpoint.

I played the Beta, was in an Outfit and had some good fun. I also had some lousy times. So I've been on the edge. With the right squad I think it's a lot of fun.
I want to see where they go with the game after a few months. So I've decided to wait it out and see what happens. After checking out the Planetside message boards to find that they greatly reduced exp, I'm glad I did. It now looks like they are slowing the game down, and putting more of a emphasis on leveling. The way it is now, I don't think I would enjoy playing a support position.
Also if I wait a month, it will mean there will be more people playing, established Outfits, better leaders, and some new content. Then I'll be able to use my free month to better judge if I want to continue playing or not.

I didn't pre-order.
Game felt...repetitive near its end. Don't get me wrong, it still has its moments, like defending a AMS from a counter-attack from infantry and reavers everywhere. That is good fun, fighting from the edge, throwing out bullets and such, or countless other scenarios which are all endlessly satisifying at their conclusion.
But the game has some bug issues, "optomization" issues and last but not least, balance issues. Some weapons do not fulfill their doctrines or were improperly balanced. For example, AV weapons should be re-named Anti-MAX for their lack of firepower against real vehicles, and so forth.
I'm considering getting a game card if they give out an actual CD key rather then some special key.

I pre-ordered long ago... I'm getting it. Game looks great, exp system looks fine, bases are vital and strategies are endless and exciting.

well, I honestly was on the edge. sure I have a great clan (which makes playing this game so much more fun) but it was getting a bit stale, and when they nerfed everything that sucked....
but it all seemed to come together towards the end, they're already gonna add new stuff, so needless to say they day before the game came out I pre-ordered it (eheh)
Know we'll just see how the new content goes.. and how long I'll keep paying for it...

The thing I really really don't understand are the people who will play the same map of counterstrike 8-10 hours a day, every day for a month, then do a light month of only 5-6 hours a day...
Get bored with PS. Makes no sense at all.

I think there are certain elements in the game that one must "get" in order to enjoy it. Thoughs that don't will get bored.
I got it. There are things in the game that still piss me off. But for the most part i like the game.

Waiting on purchase myself. I want to see how it goes from board camping for a bit.
I enjoyed the game for awhile, but it got repetative too quick. The monthly fee is a bit high in my mind too. I'll just watch to see how long it takes for them to actually start adding things.
Some things that got to me a bit(my opinion):
1. Should be more base layouts. Once you learn about 1 tower layout and 3 bases, you know what you'll face every time you run into one. I know it takes alot of work to make different ones, but I'd like to see at least 20 different base layouts and about 5 towers.
2. Maxes are too easy to get. Should require a cert in reinforced first, at least.
3. Certs need to be readjusted a bit. Some should cost more or have a req cert to force a progression to some extent.
4. This will sound odd, but I don't really like the AMS idea. While there is a strat for placement and such, it makes it too easy to get back into the battle. I know folks want to play and not have to travel to get back into the action. But AMS use makes it too fast and turns a battle into a zerg fest. If you removed the AMS, it would place alot more importance in taking towers/bases and HOLDING them. It would also make it more demanding for support to ferry troups and such.
5. Like to see a little more open terrain for vehicle combats. If I actually had a base, most of those tree would go down just to remove cover for attackers. :D
I'll just sit on my money for a bit and see how things shake out.
