Lightning

well, I've seen tons of info on how folks plan on using full sized tanks, buggies, aircraft and various hand held weps in battle or as a specialization.

one thing I'm becoming more curious about is the Lightning solo tank and how you folks see it being best used.


direct troop assault?..altho mostly en masse Im sure.
mobile AA battery? (nice chainguns on those)
backup for advancing troops?
guard duty & combat patrols?

so..with that, lets hear what y'all gots t'say. the more I see those the more I'm starting to like them.

I read somewhere that a squad of lightnings would be effectve. It's probably a good recon vehicle, a fast small tank with a gun, that's perfect for recon.

nah, i wouldnt use it so much as recon as i would a movement-to-contatct mission, which is kinda a recon, but your expecting the enemy, so you go out more heavily armed

I think you'll see them out on patrol/intercept missions.

Let's say you and a few friends are at the base having a some R&R when a report of enemy troops comes in. You all hop into Lightinings and go meet the assualt before it has a chance to get to your base. That way you can take out their tanks so your forces at the base only have to deal with foot soldiers.

For assualting bases I think you'll be better off with the 2 man tank.

A light tank won't last long in a Kamikaze mission against a base. :)

but yeah, it was meant to be a bit cryptic so you'd look at it long enough to see the firing sequence.

the lightning may be a tank but it's still a tank...

it's one person driven, fast, from the looks of some vids agile, has a nice array of weapons (a cannon and a chain gun) and it can be airlifted, sure it's not heavily armored but mobility is one of the most important attributes in war. If you can't get there in time, then whats the point of driving a heavy tank? hehe

sounds like a pretty nice weapon to me overall, espescially in numbers...

I'm guessing the Lightening will be the preffered vehicle for vehicular homicide... running people over.

Fast, tough, relatively manuverable.

The buggies and quads leave the driver exposed, they can be shot, particularly with the quads. Not so with the lightening. It would suck to get killed by your would-be target.

Of course the Lightening is also well armed enough that it may never actually need to run anyone over. 75mm of goodness.

I predict that a full squad of Lightenings will be a relatively common occurance. It sounds like just the thing to seek out and destroy clusters of drop pods, or a galaxy's landing site.

I also wouldn't be suprised to find that a lightening cert will be a pre-req to the empire-specific tanks, so certs will be relatively common.

Tanks rock.

A lightening cert will probably be the first thing I shoot for... though the Reaver sounds like a good time too.

I see the lightning being a good escort for larger tanks, or get a large group of them and you could cause some heavy damage.

As for the topic i can't wait to check the lighting out but i think i'll prefer the MAX over the light tank.

but walking around in a MAX I think will be akin to being the gunner in a machinegun nest. your life expectancy will be greatly reduced just because youre a greater threat than anything else on the battlefield....and everyone will want to lay at least a little hurt on you.

so folks who would normally be hitting anything that moves will spot an enemy MAX and dump an entire clip of ammo into you....multiply that by an entire squad and the MAX's are going to be (albeit very tough) moving primary targets.


I think life in a MAX is going to be a hard life. Considering your choices are stand and fight or....die, while most mobiles have the option to 'run away and fight another day'

Depends on the abilities.

VS MAX vs Lightning : Probably MAX since he could hop over the tank and dodge it "easily".

NC MAX vs Lightning : Tough call. Shields would help defend against the tank.

TR MAX vs Lightning : Probably tank since the TR can't really use his anchor against a fast moving vehicle.

Yeah but i was talking about Lightnings vis-a-vis MAXs as well. The point of lightnings is they are faster and more maneuverable and perhaps have more firepower than the MAXs. :)

My bet is that the MAX and Lightning are pretty suitable matched, and who would win in a fight would go down to who is the better twich player. But each of them has thier own reasons of being.

Lightnings are faster than the MAX, and do have better Firepower, BUT can a Lightning go into a base and walk around? and can a lightning specialize in taking out aircraft, vehicles, or personnel? I think that lightnings are more for heavy tank certified people who couldn't find gunners, just something to use until you can find a crew. I imagine people will find many great uses for both the MAX and the Lightning when the games comes out the we are yet to think of here.
