View Full Version : Whatever happened to free MMOs?

Imagine a world in which you just bought a game and could play it online for free. Once I have a larger income, more than 7 dollars a week for allowance, I'm going to gladly pay for games. But what about now? The most I make in a week is $9, a far cry from shelling out $50 for a game, then paying for it, $13 a month. It's good and well to have $13 a month if everybody or nearly everybody could pay that, but anybody my age, we only get money by selling our junk and allowance, about $9 a week.

Damn the child labor laws, damn them to hell! I wanna go work now! My best friend is getting paid $90 bling to come over 3 times a day and feed our pets for 2 weeks, $2 a visit. It takes almost no work to do that, and he gets $90? The most I get is $13 if my parents are feeling generous and let me mow the yard. Those people at McDonalds who say "Can I take your order" and shout your order back to the cooks make more money than me! I demand that youths be paid more, or they let kids take the "can I take your order" jobs.

Why is it that adults think they can be cheapskates with kids? If my best friend, mentioned above, were an adult, he'd be making over 3 times as much as what he's being paid. *sigh* I'm bored now, just had to vent. Fortunately, my parents finally will allow me to get and play Planetside, but I have no money because *gasp* I don't get paid enough! God, It's late here, g'night folks.

ok think of this your parents may only give you $13 bucks on a genrous week but what about everything else your parents do? Like oh I don't know food, clothing, a house to live in lunch money blah blah blah etc. etc. if you count that YOU should be paying your parents if you want to talk about fair.

Responding to the topic of the thread, and not the bizarre rant on working people earning more money than a runt who watches television and plays video games...

There have been no free MMOs, so therefore nothing could have happened to them.

Actually, there are quite a few... nothing spectacular... Dransik or some such crap... few others which escape my mind for whatever reason... but yeah, not anything note-worthy i guess...

I hate to be the stodgy old 24 year old, but dude, you have nothing to complain about.

I'd take a job as a caddy if I were you, you can do that at 13 (i believe) and though the pay sucks (legal wage is half of normal minimum or something), if you go out of your way to charm the customers, you can get huge tips.

Also, when I was a young tot like yourself I used to buy boxes of M&M candy at a warehouse discount store for fifteen bucks and sell it 'to pay my way to Christian summer camp' to all the suburban people.. its an easy way to make 400% profit. It sure paid for my GameBoy addiction.

Overall I'd say enjoy your non-working days as long as you can. I've been in the full-time working world for 4 years now and believe me, the money doesn't make up for the soul-sucking 40 hours I spend in my cubicle each week.

So basically, it sucks when you're young and don't have money, and it sucks when you're older and do have money. You're fucked.

MMO games used to be a lot crappier(no graphics just text based etc) and they used to have hourly costs with an occassional game with unlimited play for a monthly fee. Its getting cheaping to play a massive game not more expensive. The only free titles were either small time games or beta's. If you really cannot afford a monthly fee you need to stick to games that can be played on a local server or hosted by a players computer in which case they aren't really MMO's generally.

Theres nothign you can do to cahnge the fact that you have to pay for playing on the servers. Deal with it. Get a job when ur old enough. Do extra chores around the hosue or something. You'll scrape up the money if you really want to paly this game.

Why the hell are you posting this here? It's not like PSU can change the child labor laws.

BUT maybe posting this in the lounge forums instead of game discussin could help.

Dude you get 7 bucks a week, on average you put aside 3 bucks and use or save your 4 bucks. There is about 4 weeks in a month, so you get 12 bucks. Now then you just pull 1 buck from the totall of the saved/used bucks. And there you go. So stop crying. Get a job cutting trees or somtin like i do. Or wash trucks. do something that is not rally a buisness.

There used to be and still are a lot of MUDS out there and in their heyday more then a few could almost qualify for massively multiplayer status. Their still out there many with quite a good sized following you just have to be willing to put up with the text base interface.

Matuse free MMO's have been around forever. There are many
Diablo Series
Lineage (That crazy Korean game with like 1 million chars on screen)
And these are just some of the persistent ones

Diablo sucks. It's basically a contest of who can click faster or who had the most time on their hands. Bad game.

Diablo is not by the wildest stretch of the imagination "massively multiplayer" when you are restricted to 8 people.

Lineage is PAY PER MONTH. It also sucks, but that doesn't really enter into it.

It costs them money to maintain servers and pay their staff, if they didn't charge us they would just be losing money by the second, so yeah...

THere acctually is a good thing about the monthly fees. The game makers want you to play the game as long as possible because they get payed by you every month, so to keep you playing they are constantly updating and tweaking the game to make it more enjoyable. Also because you have to pay this monthly fee you get better service from the company if you have a problem. This leads to a better (although more expensive) gaming experiance.

The 13 per month is server maintainence.

I guess the initial box price is designed to recoup development costs + some profit.

Then the 13 per month is server maintainence+ some profit

I used to program MUDs for a "living"... I was the head programmer for DirtyMUD. That's when I was a college student and had time to burn. :)

They used to be fun, but as soon as graphical MMOs came out, they seemed pretty dry and worthless. It's not worth going to a text-based MUD if you enjoy playing in the graphical environment. MUD is for people that care ONLY for the social aspects of MMOGs. It's a VERY social atmosphere, but as I've said, gameplay cannot really compare.

ok a solution,

u ever heared of ultima online, well what happend there is that people dident whnt to pay to go on the main server, so what they did is build an emulumilator, this allowed them to host their down server for mmorpg.

so fif some1 builds one and sets up a server for free plz e-mail me at [email protected]

its not that i dont want to pay, its that i cant pay, i like in good old england, with no creditcard, theeforce cant pay, get a game card people say, the only place u can get gamecards are online through sony, and u have to buy them useing a credit card and with postage its $88 total for 3 months!.

some1 people then say ask your parents to use their card,

they dont want their account numbe online they say its "hackable" no mattch how much i reassure them.

its either freeservers or a shop like game or hmv start sellign game cards.

(if u know anywhee in the uk a shop in the uk like game or hmv ect that sells game cards tell me ive been unsucsesful locating one but i minght of missed a place).

dude, quit being a bratty little kid and just sell drugs. Forget all these suggestiosn for "legitimate" work, and go the easy money route. You'll be surprised how much people your age are willing to pay for drugs, not to mention it will make you a lot of friends. Now go out there and be a good little pusher.

Don't bother purchasing any MMO game. Just stick to your xbox or whatever.

And don't get addicted to any video games its one of the worst things you can do. One person committed suicide from his addiction to Everquest.

Besides getting a job.
Get a real life.

And if you fu** up your life its not going to be my problem.
