View Full Version : Weather effects? Is day & night realtime or no?

This might take up too much room, and slow the game down. But it could be helpful, like a someone in a stealth suit would be asier to see, because the rain was landing on them or something. I also found that weather effects can ruin the game, so can pitchblack night time :p Oh, and also is the game in real time? Like when it's 3 pm its daytime, but when its 3 a.m. its night time... just an idea, this would make it cool and encourage players to play at different times.

but people will be playing in different time zones all over the world so it wouldn't work. pluss the devs said that night time wouldn't last that long, maybe an hour or two

maybe, but server positions are relative to the player's area except in certain circumstances.

Exactly, you would be playing in the server for your area. So you would basically be in the same time zone for everybody else. Give or take an hour or so.

or maybe planetside can have its own clock

I hope they are not real time. I have to work for a living, and I hate to play this game in the dark every single time I played it.

Yeah, you're right. Around the time PS comes out I'd be playing at night too :( Damn baseball :p

I think it would be fun to play at night... but not all the time. I get home pretty late as well and that would suck. You could always play into the wee hours of the morning and it should be day time by then...

does anyone think that PS having 3 hours of day, then 6 hours of day ect....

8 is more round 4 day 4 night. you could fit it into the idea that you can get 3 auraxis days out of 1 earth day. damn i feel like a startrek edit:geek saying that. :(

I think it would be cool if different continents were in different time zones. That would create a scenario where you could have a realtime clock and still not be stuck in the same day/night cycle at your regular playing time.
A simple 2:1 compression would work too, or even 1:2 so you have 24 hours light, 24 hours dark. But the day/night cycle is an extra-low priority for me, I just want to get my hands on the game.

You know I don't know where I read this, (I'm looking now) but I think it is in like a six or nine hour cycle, with like 3 of night (maybe). I don't know, I'm looking for the link....

For some odd reason, I remember hearing that too. That the night period was shorter than the day period.
It sounds like old information though. Might have changed by now.

The game wont be real time - they had not finalized the night/day cycle when I played.
Weather was not in the game at the time either

I'm looking forward to freak snow storms in the middle of the desert. I better see it or I'll be pretty pissed!

Zarp, where the hell did we read that. I spent like 10 mins of my life trying to find that damn thread.........

I'm going to be disappointed if weather is not in the game. That's a great environmental effect that is decent with some simple 2d sprites.
3 hour nights and 6 hour days (real time) sounds good to me. Plus it doesn't line up with 24, so night/day in PS keeps changing in RL.
Just a few ideas...

i think a 5 hour day would be good. 3 hours of daylight, 2 hours of night

I think delos's idea is great because then if you have people who can only get on for a little while at the same time of day then they could play at night or day, but i think it would be nicer to have as much (or more) night time as day time because night assaults just make more sense when attacking a base (to obtain surprise).

I dont raelly care about weather... it's got it's pros and cons...
Pro: It adds to the game, looks nice
Con: Some/most games lag in rain/snow, or have problems with the "clipping plane"(how far you can see), when it rains & such...
if rain doesnt slow the game, I'm fine with it.. if it does slow the game, and kill all visibility.. I'd hate it ;-P

As long as there is no fog  In DF:Land Warrior you could barely see the end of your gun

OOOOHHH I HATE FOG OF WAR!!!   I hope this game doesn't get like that, in Sof2 the weapons aren't even useful at their full range because you can only see halfway to your target. Also, howcome all alien planets have a weather pattern Identical to Earths? Why not have the water evaporater really fast (Kinda like reverse rain) or some thing new?

I didnt see much fog

All the Random maps are full of fog, and not much fun to play. The only ones with fog on the other maps that I can think of are Columbia, and Columbia 2

Yeah I was talking about those large rgm ctf ones. Those are the best (if it wasn't for that damn fog). Hey hamma, did you get to play at twilight or so? Was their like a morning dew or fog on the ground? That would be pimptastic.

Not that I noticed, I did play a bit during dusk/night/dawn tho ;)

Whats it like in dim light? Are things farther away a lot harder to see? How difficult is it to see at night? Is there a significant enough difference that you will have to alter playing styles? Tell us all about it *pulls up chair, turns on fireplace*.

I assume playing at night is like playing in the dark...

Damnit Nav! I can't seem to find it anywhere... I'm nigh positive that I heard that from something/someone though.
Maybe it was when I was "smokin' the joobah!" :p
