I'm new to PS. New to MMOG too. Was a Q2 player, Half-life freak, and a UT and UT2K3 devotee.
I think I was bored with the run and gun and wanted something that had a bit more to it. That's why I picked planetside. I picked Johari because it had the lowest ping for me. I'm on the Oregon Coast so pings are 90 to 110, which is about as good as it gets.
I started with NC because I liked the logo.
So far I like it all a lot. About the only thing I do well is die but I'm learning. Got on one squad that was a lot of fun and on another that I got separated from and never saw again.
I thought being good at UT2K3 would make this game easy. That's pretty funny, isn't it?

First thing you should do is find an outfit, a GOOD one, not just one that spam recruits members. Finding one you fit in with and work well with is a lot better than being all alone in one of the top outfits where the leader cannot even remember your name :p

I know you're right. I read a few of the recruitement posts and went to a few websites, but didn't see anything too interesting.
I'm interested in learning to play well. Team play.
LEarn teamplaying well, this game centers around the idea of working together in a team.

:D I couldn't agree more. I lucked out ... my brother-in-law was part of the beta ... and pointed me in the right direction. Met some great and helpful folks here ... newb and vet. Have hooked up with various people in different groups over the last month. Now if I can just figure out some certs and stick with them ...

One thing I've found is that you advance faster as a lone player.
I've teamed on a squad with some of my son's IT buddies, good guys all, and found that it's hard to stay with a squad without voice chat. I'll try voice and see how that goes.
My leaning at this moment is toward playing alone. I'm pretty intense about kill rate. And I think I have developed a direction cert wise.

I know what you mean about previous FPS experience not coming in as useful as you'd expected. You don't toss it all out, but you have to change it pretty drastically. You can xp pretty well solo, but a good squad will net you more xp in a hurry. Of course, getting lucky and happening to catch up to a massive group of players steamrolling a continent (and meeting good resistance) is the easiest quick xp that I've found.
I actually joined one of the 'spam' outfits (honestly I just can't see devoting that much time to trying to find an outfit that is exactly what I'm looking for). It hasn't been that bad, there's tons of members and some of them are great. It's just a matter of knowing which ones are helpful and which ones you could probably do without.

One thing's for sure, it's a lot of fun. And the lag and game style tend to give a level playing field to the much older player like me -- a quick wrist flick isn't as important as it was in other shooters. I'm still on the learning curve for keyboard commands/ Never used much more than jump, fire, alt fire and switch weapons.

Definite learning curve ... movin' about and monitoring the radar and chat areas for info can overwhelm ya sometimes. Getting accustomed to the keys and HUD and codes ... turned messed up vacation plans into a week and a half of regular practice. :p
Spent time alone just roaming around getting used to what's what and watching and learning ... lots of good players out there on all three sides to learn from.

Man, the lag was terrible tonight. Worst ever I think.
