Hey all, my dad is going to be purchasing a Digital Camera for himself soon, and he told me to do some research on them (I'm the techie of the family).

So, I ask you guys :) What are some good cameras? Any personal experience? How about quality on some? What's the whole deal about mega pixels and crap?

Any input is highly appreciated =)

I bought a Canon Powershot S400(4.0 Megapixels) before I went to Hawaii and this thing is great. I was originally going to go with G2, but it was discontinued and the G3 didn't have what I was looking for. The S400 is VERY small and light but still takes crystal clear pictures. The software is also great. I have done alot of experimenting with it, mainly because I haven't had to do any editing to the photos I have taken thus far(Although I may cut this ladies big ass out of my memorial wall pic).

I uploaded a few quick shots form my trip so you can see the quality:

Charles Lindbergh's grave site(I have more pics of this, but this is the shot that captured the most foliage):

Pics of the Arizona memorial wall:

A view at dusk from my room at the Ritz on Maui:

The Arizona memorial with the Missouri in the background:

Keep in mind, on these pages, the pictures are enlarged so it gives off the effect that the pixels are much larger than they actually are. They are much clearer on photo paper. And also remember, I basically suck at photography. :) It's really all about how much you're willing to pay, and how small you want your camera to be. I recommend going somewhere like Amazon and reading the reviews.

One thing that has always bothered me is the lack of zoom...

anyone know any cameras with a good zoom?

Never get digital zoom. Always optical.

Sputty is correct, look for optical zoom, as opposed to digital. Digital zooms just sacrifices resolution to "zoom" - so to 2x digitally zoom on a 600 dpi pic, it's now a 300dpi pic cropped.

More megapixels = more resolution, which is generally what you want, as you can always voluntarily shoot at lower res if desired. The only downside is full res pics take more space - not too much of a problem with increasing storage capacity.

I've seen some digitals that do have a good optical zoom lens.

Anyway, there's plenty of digital camera review sites out there - just google for 'em.

I've got an Olympus D-460 ZOOM 1.3 Megapixel. While I'd be happy to upgrade to a newer model if I had the money (which I don't  ), 1.3 Megapixels is actually good enough for most of my usage (vacation pics and such). The main feature I wish I had would be a better zoom.

So what's a good site, and what's a camera that you would suggest? What feature's are the most important?

Most of the digital cameras eat batteries like shit. My advice to you is get one with a decent size for a powerpack.
